Sonus Faber Lumina Collection – Elegant entrance…

Sonus Faber Lumina I and Sonus Faber Lumina III, a bookshelf speaker system, a floorstanding speaker system, plus the Sonus Faber Lumina CI and thus a centre speaker, this is how the latest speaker series from Italy, the Sonus Faber Lumina Collection, presents itself.

It is a new product line that, in the tried and tested manner, is entirely dedicated to the goal of bringing music to life in its most beautiful form, as Sonus Faber has always pursued, although this is even more important today than ever before. The Italian loudspeaker manufacturer Sonus Faber S.p.A., which is the driving force behind the development of the new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection, has set itself the noble goal of making every moment savoured to the full.

The fact that people in Italy are particularly fond of the finer things in life is more than just a preconception, after all, the proverbial dolce vita is celebrated here, and it is indeed this special lifestyle that continues to produce the finest solutions in the hi-fi segment, such as the Sonus Faber Lumina Collection.

The name of the new product line Sonus Faber Lumina Collection can be taken literally, as lumina stands for light in Latin. The intention of the developers was, metaphorically speaking, to lighten up everyday life with the finest musical performance. The fact that in this case only a comparatively small budget is required is gratifying. After all, the new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection is described as a new entry-level line, but – according to Sonus Faber – the company is still committed to its long tradition of high-quality loudspeaker construction.

“The new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection brings together the core values that characterise the Sonus Faber brand, such as the choice of high quality materials such as genuine multi-layered wood and leather, and combines them with incredible performance in a simple yet luxurious design”.

The new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection is launched with three models: a compact bookshelf speaker system, the Sonus Faber Lumina I, a stylish floorstanding speaker system in the shape of the Sonus Faber Lumina III, and a dedicated centre speaker, the Sonus Faber Lumina CI. So it is clear that once again the Italians are not only dedicating themselves to classic stereo with the new product line, but are also designing it for use in home cinema.

Compared to other systems, however, the design of the new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection is based on the principle “less is more”, according to the manufacturer, thus relying on an almost minimalist, square design, which above all focuses on the quality of the materials used.

Three versions are available, firstly an elegant black piano lacquer finish, and secondly wenge and walnut, although in all three versions only the baffle is manufactured, not the actual chassis in the respective version. The cabinet itself is always finished in black leather.

By the way, all three speakers are enthroned on a base, which in the case of the shelf speaker as well as the centre speaker is slightly offset inwards, and in the case of the floorstanding speaker system protrudes above the cabinet and in this case of course has height-adjustable spikes.

The reason for this is simple: the base in question is actually the bass reflex port, which is used in all three models and is led out to the front.

The speaker systems of the new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection once again use so-called D.A.D Tweeters, which stands for Damped Apex Dome, and these are used in the same way for the Sonus Faber Sonnetto Collection. Equipped with a Soft Silk Diaphragm with a diameter of 29 mm a chrome ring decorates the tweeter.

In the mid-tone range, the company relies on drivers that also come from the Sonus Faber Sonnetto Collection and use a special fabric made of natural fibres.

According to the Arcugnano-based company, the low-frequency drivers have been specially developed for the new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection, from scratch, using a membrane made of coated paper.

The same applies to the crossover used in the new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection, which has also been redesigned from the ground up to ensure optimum matching of the drivers in terms of phase and amplitude response, and therefore perfect timing overall. Naturally, the finest components are used here, as well as for the connection terminal, which is designed to allow both bi-wiring and bi-amping.

The smallest new model in the Sonus Faber Lumina Collection, the Sonus Faber Lumina I bookshelf speaker system, is a two-way bass reflex system, whereby the 29 mm tweeter is combined with a 120 mm woofer. It should be able to reproduce a frequency range between 65 Hz and 24 kHz, with the crossover network starting at 2 kHz. With an impedance of 4 ohms and a sensitivity of 84 dB, it is designed for amplifiers with a power output between 30 and 100 watts. The Sonus Faber Lumina I measures 280 x 148 x 213 mm and weighs 4.4 kg.

The floor-standing speaker system of the new product line, the Sonus Faber Lumina III, is designed as a three-way bass-reflex system and thus combines the 29 mm High Definition DAD driver as tweeter with a 150 mm midrange driver and two 150 mm woofers. In conjunction with the bass reflex system, which acts forward on the underside, a frequency range between 40 Hz and 24 kHz is to be reproduced here, with the crossover unit starting at 350 Hz and 3.5 kHz. With an impedance of 4 Ohm and an efficiency of 89 dB, an amplifier output of 50 to 250 Watts is recommended for this loudspeaker system. Measuring 998 x 228 x 227.7 mm, the Sonus Faber Lumina III weighs 15.9 kg.

It is interesting to note that the Sonus Faber Lumina CI, the centre speaker of the Sonus Faber Lumina Colllection, is also designed as a two-way bass reflex system, whereby two 120 mm woofers are used in addition to the 29 mm tweeter, and can thus reproduce a frequency range between 65 Hz and 24 kHz. As with the bookshelf speaker system of the series, the crossover is designed for 2 kHz. With an impedance of 4 ohms and an efficiency of 87 dB, the manufacturer recommends an amplifier output of between 30 and 100 watts. This centre does not really take up much space, as it measures no more than 168.6 x 523.6 x 212.7 mm and thus weighs 7.6 kg.

According to the information currently available, the new model series from Sonus Faber will not require too much patience. The products of the Sonus Faber Lumina Collection should be available in specialist shops as early as the end of September 2020.

The Sonus Faber Lumina I is the first model to be launched, with a recommended retail price of € 799 per pair, which makes it an extremely attractive offer. This also applies to the Sonus Faber Lumina III, as the recommended retail price per pair is only € 1,999. Even for the centre speaker, there is no need to dig deep into your pockets, as the new Sonus Faber Lumina CI is available at a suggested retail price of € 649.

Finally, Sonus Faber recommends Sonus Faber Gravis I and Sonus Faber Gravis II as subwoofers for use with the new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection in home cinema. This way, for example, an impeccable 5.1-channel surround system can be set up.
