A good party needs music. A really big one needs a sound system that keeps its composure when the volume goes up. That is the gap Harman International Industries Inc. is aiming to fill with the JBL PartyBox Ultimate 2, a speaker released under its JBL brand that goes well beyond what most people expect from a portable Bluetooth box. As the new flagship of the successful JBL PartyBox Series, it combines an elaborate acoustic design and 1.500 watts RMS of output with versatile connectivity and a long list of features for very different kinds of entertainment.
What stands out is that JBL is not chasing raw power alone. Sound quality, easy operation and the freedom to plug in almost any audio source carry equal weight, whether that means streaming services, professional DJ equipment, karaoke or several speakers playing in unison.

More than a Bluetooth box: a network player on wheels
The most telling thing about the JBL PartyBox Ultimate 2 is not its output figure but its list of interfaces. Alongside Bluetooth 6.0 with support for Bluetooth LE Audio, it offers Wi-Fi 6, so the speaker can join a wireless network directly rather than relying on a phone as a go-between.
The range of streaming standards on board is unusually broad for this category. Apple AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and Qobuz Connect are all supported, and JBL also lists the speaker as Roon Ready, meaning it should slot into a suitably equipped Roon setup. In practice, the PartyBox Ultimate 2 can therefore act as a stand-alone network audio player, with compatible services and playback systems reaching it directly.
JBL Auracast adds another layer. It allows several compatible JBL speakers to be linked, either to cover a larger area or to spread the music across multiple units.
Controls on the speaker itself
For the first time, a PartyBox now has a built-in touchscreen. It sits on top of the enclosure and is paired with a redesigned control that doubles as the volume dial.
The screen gives direct access to the essentials: playback, the light show and various settings. It also shows details of the track that is playing and of the active lighting. At events where nobody wants to keep reaching for a phone, that is a sensible idea. Those who want to go further can use the JBL One app, which handles lighting, individual functions and other parameters.
From streaming playlist to DJ booth
The wired connections are just as versatile as the wireless ones. A professional XLR line input allows a DJ mixer to be connected, while an optical digital input links the speaker to a television, which is likely to appeal mainly to karaoke fans. An analogue aux input and sockets for a microphone and a guitar complete the line-up. USB-C provides a digital audio connection, and JBL explicitly specifies lossless transmission over it.
The result is a speaker that suits more than the classic party with a streaming playlist. Smaller events, presentations, karaoke evenings and sessions with external DJ equipment are all within its remit.
Karaoke and party games
EasySing AI Vocal Removal is aimed squarely at karaoke nights. The technology reduces or removes the vocals from existing recordings, so ordinary songs can be used as backing tracks.
The speaker also offers a selection of party games, launched from its built-in interface. JBL clearly sees the system as a complete entertainment package rather than a device that merely plays music.
Power with a purpose
According to the manufacturer, the JBL PartyBox Ultimate 2 delivers more output than any previous speaker in the PartyBox family. Compared with the previous generation, output has reportedly risen by more than 36 per cent. At 1.500 watts RMS, that leaves ample headroom for large gatherings and for demanding music with sharp dynamic peaks.
JBL’s approach is interesting. Conventional party speakers tend to put heavy bass and a headline maximum volume first. This new generation is meant to impress on differentiation, speech intelligibility and spatial reproduction as well. To that end, the whole acoustic architecture has been reworked and combined with technologies that partly originate in professional sound reinforcement.
Six drivers, one broad sound
Inside the speaker sits a six-driver design. Two 10-inch woofers work together with two bass-reflex ports to handle the low frequencies, while two 5-inch midrange drivers are tasked with giving voices and instruments the necessary presence. Up top, two 1-inch PEN tweeters are fitted with acoustic horns.
The horn design is worth noting. It applies a principle that also plays an important role in JBL’s professional sound systems: high frequencies are radiated in a controlled and efficient way, so the sound stays clear and detailed even for listeners standing further away.
The manufacturer quotes a frequency range of 28 Hz to 20 kHz (-6 dB). The speaker should therefore deliver powerful bass impulses while also covering a wide musical spectrum. Whether the material is electronic music, rock, pop or live recordings, the system is built to combine dynamics and punch with the highest possible sound quality.
AI Sound Boost and Smart EQ
A key part of the technical package is AI Sound Boost, a JBL-developed technology. It analyses the incoming audio signal continuously in real time and adjusts the signal processing dynamically to suit it. The aim is to make the best possible use of the available power reserves and keep distortion low even at high volumes.
With this much output, effective control of the drivers is essential. The point is not simply to reach high sound pressure levels but to keep playback clean and composed during complex passages.
AI Sound Boost is complemented by a Smart EQ mode, which allows further tuning of the sound. JBL is leaning more heavily on digital signal processing here, in order to get as much as possible from the acoustic hardware.
A light show that extends beyond the cabinet
The JBL PartyBox Ultimate 2 does not want to be seen only as a source of sound, and its elaborate lighting makes that clear. JBL has thoroughly reworked the familiar PartyBox Lightshow for the new flagship, using layered effects, dynamic wave patterns and a distinctive floor projection.
The lighting covers large areas of the speaker front and is synchronised with the music. Ripple effects create the impression of waves of light spreading outwards, while several lighting layers are intended to add spatial depth.
The integrated floor projection is the standout feature, pushing the visual display beyond the speaker’s enclosure. The idea is that the PartyBox Ultimate 2 does not merely play music but becomes a central part of the staging of an event.
Size, weight and where it can go
Despite its considerable dimensions, the JBL PartyBox Ultimate 2 has been designed to be reasonably easy to move. It has larger, sturdier wheels and an ergonomically shaped handle. With a weight of around 47,7 kg, these are far more than comfort features; they are essential for practical handling.
At roughly 46,7 × 105,3 × 49,3 cm, this is a full-sized party speaker, and a suitable place needs to be found for it. The enclosure is rated IPX4, so it is protected against splashing water, which makes use on a terrace or at a garden party easier. It is not protected against heavy rain, let alone immersion.
It is also important to note that the speaker is designed for mains operation. Unlike smaller portable party speakers, it is not a battery-powered system that can run independently of a power supply.
JBL says sustainability was also considered in the construction, with recycled materials used in part.
