A Modern Amplifier Without Integrated Streaming

Removing a network function from a new amplifier may initially seem like a step backwards. In the case of the Vincent SV-737MK, however, it reflects a clear view of how systems in this performance class are often assembled.

Many demanding HiFi installations already employ a dedicated network player. For their owners, the integrated WiFi module of the Vincent SV-737 was not necessarily the most important part of the amplifier. A television, by contrast, has become a regular source in many living rooms, even where music reproduction remains the system’s primary purpose.

Vincent therefore replaces WiFi with HDMI ARC. The digital audio signal from a compatible television can be routed directly to the integrated amplifier and reproduced through the main stereo speakers. Network streaming is not abandoned as a system option, but it must now be provided by a separate component.

This will not suit every owner equally well. Anyone who relied on the integrated network capability of the previous model will have to budget for an external streamer. Where a specialised network player is already part of the system, however, HDMI ARC is likely to offer considerably greater everyday value.

One Power Amplifier for Stereo and Home Cinema

The second major revision concerns access to the preamplifier and power amplifier sections. On the Vincent SV-737, these sections were separated using external bridging links. The Vincent SV-737MK instead provides dedicated stereo Pre Out and stereo Main In connections.

The Main In operates as a bypass input. An AV receiver or AV processor can consequently control the front channels of a Home Cinema system while using the Vincent SV-737MK and its connected main speakers as the corresponding power amplifier and loudspeaker combination.

For conventional two-channel listening, the Vincent SV-737MK continues to work as a complete integrated amplifier. This arrangement avoids the need to install separate amplifiers and duplicate front speakers for music and film. In a high-quality system intended to handle both applications in the same room, that is a substantially more elegant solution.

Valves Where Voltage Gain Matters

The revisions around the connections do not alter the established hybrid concept inside the amplifier. Its preamplifier is arranged as two gain blocks and incorporates tone controls for bass and treble. These controls can be removed completely from the signal path whenever direct operation is preferred.

Two 6N2P dual triodes handle voltage amplification. A further pair of 6N1P valves, with their high-current cathodes, is employed in the driver and buffer stage.

Vincent also retains the regulated high-voltage supply derived from the Vincent SA-T7MK. An 85A2 voltage-reference valve, originally developed for professional measuring equipment, works together with a semiconductor regulator. According to the manufacturer, this arrangement provides the valve stage with a low-noise supply that is virtually free of hum.

The allocation of tasks remains characteristic of the larger Vincent tubeLine integrated amplifiers: valves perform central functions in the preamplifier, while transistors deliver the power and current required by more demanding loudspeakers.

Class A for the First Ten Watts, Up to 300 Watt Beyond

The power amplifier is fundamentally based on the design used in the Vincent SV-237MKII, although Vincent developed it considerably further for the original Vincent SV-737. This architecture is carried over to the Vincent SV-737MK.

According to the company, the input cascode was optimised to improve transient behaviour when the amplifier is driving complex loads. Its output is also substantially higher than that of the Vincent SV-237MKII.

The Vincent SV-737MK supplies 2 × 180 Watt RMS into 8 Ohm and 2 × 300 Watt RMS into 4 Ohm. The first 2 × 10 Watt into 8 Ohm are delivered in Class A operation. These figures indicate that the amplifier is not restricted to particularly efficient loudspeakers and should, on paper, have useful reserves for more difficult loads.

Vincent describes the sonic character of the valve and transistor combination as being inspired by high-quality single-ended triode amplifiers, but operating at a much higher power level. That remains a manufacturer claim until the Vincent SV-737MK can demonstrate it in a detailed review. The technical architecture is nevertheless clearly intended to combine valve character with the control of a powerful solid-state output stage.

Analogue, Digital and Bluetooth Sources

Five stereo RCA inputs accommodate conventional analogue line-level components. Digital sources can be connected through two optical S/PDIF inputs and two coaxial S/PDIF inputs, while Bluetooth provides the wireless option.

The output section includes the new stereo Pre Out, a stereo Rec Out and two Power Control connections using 3.5 mm sockets. Terminals for two pairs of speakers are also fitted, with the required pair selected from the front panel.

The amplifier therefore remains broadly equipped even without integrated WiFi. Its emphasis has simply shifted from providing an internal network function to accommodating external analogue and digital sources while supporting more flexible system integration.

Traditional Vincent Design on a Generous Scale

The Vincent SV-737MK retains the visual language of its predecessor. Its wide, clearly divided front panel carries separate controls for bass, treble, source selection and volume. At the centre, a circular window reveals the illuminated valve section.

Front-panel buttons provide direct access to analogue or digital source groups, tone-control bypass, the two speaker pairs and mute. There is no attempt to hide the amplifier’s functions behind a minimalist interface.

Nor is this a compact lifestyle component. Measuring 430 × 165 × 430 mm and weighing 21 kg, the Vincent SV-737MK requires a suitably substantial shelf or equipment rack. Its large lateral heatsinks further underline the conventional high-power amplifier construction. The front panel is available in either black or silver.

The Vincent SV-737MK is a disciplined update built around a clear system concept. Replacing WiFi with HDMI ARC will not benefit owners who expected the integrated amplifier to perform its own network-streaming duties. For listeners already using a dedicated streamer, however, the change gives a frequently used source – the television – a more direct place within the stereo system.

The new bypass-capable Main In is the less controversial and arguably more significant improvement. It turns the powerful hybrid integrated amplifier into a flexible foundation for systems in which serious two-channel listening and Home Cinema must share the same room, amplifier channels and main loudspeakers.
