Up to 1.300 mW from the Balanced Output

In transistor mode, the balanced 4,4 mm Pentaconn output delivers up to 1.300 mW into 32 Ohms. The single-ended 3,5 mm connection provides up to 361 mW under the same load. These are unusually substantial figures for a self-contained portable CD player and should make the MAX edition suitable for considerably more than efficient mobile headphones.

Selecting valve mode does not bring about a dramatic reduction in available power. Shanling specifies up to 1.162 mW into 32 Ohms from the balanced output, while the 3.5 mm connection continues to provide as much as 361 mW.

Low Gain and High Gain settings allow the amplifier’s operating range to be matched more closely to the connected headphones. Low Gain should provide the finer level control required by sensitive in-ear monitors, while High Gain makes the enlarged power reserves available to less efficient full-size designs.

The improvement is therefore twofold. The EC Zero T MAX offers more current and voltage headroom for challenging headphones, but its reduced output impedance also makes it a more appropriate partner for loads that require delicacy rather than brute force.

Refined 24 Bit R2R DAC Circuitry

Shanling continues to use the proprietary R2R conversion module developed for the original Shanling EC Zero T. This 24 Bit architecture employs 192 precision resistors with a stated tolerance of 0,1 per cent rather than relying on a conventional off-the-shelf DAC chip.

For the MAX edition, the company has drawn on experience gained while developing the Shanling PRO R2R DAC used in the Shanling SCD3.3 and Shanling SCD1.3R. According to Shanling, the changes should produce a wider and deeper presentation together with greater transparency through the midrange and treble. Users can choose between Oversampling and Non-Oversampling operation. NOS mode avoids digital oversampling and its associated filtering, while OS mode applies digital processing before conversion. The choice provides two different approaches to reconstruction and allows the listener to decide which presentation works best with a particular recording or headphone.

JAN6418 Valves or Transistor Operation

Two JAN6418 miniature valves remain an important part of the Shanling EC Zero T MAX. Their modest voltage and power requirements make them well suited to a battery-operated product, although their use in a portable player also creates a mechanical challenge.

The disc transport is a dedicated compact mechanism developed for the EC Zero series. Its active Magnetic Clamp continually adjusts its position and holding pressure while the disc is turning. Gapless Playback is supported, which matters for live recordings, concept albums, DJ mixes and classical works in which consecutive tracks are intended to flow without pauses. USB DAC Operation up to 768 kHz and DSD512

CD playback is only one part of the EC Zero T MAX concept. Connected to a computer through USB-C, the device operates as an external DAC and headphone amplifier, accepting Linear PCM at up to 32 Bit and 768 kHz as well as DSD up to DSD512.

This gives the player a credible second role on a desktop. Rather than keeping a separate USB DAC and headphone amplifier beside a portable CD player, the Shanling can handle all three tasks. The supported codecs are SBC, aptX and aptX Adaptive. With a compatible receiving device, aptX Adaptive can vary its data rate to balance sound quality, latency and connection stability according to operating conditions.

Bluetooth transmission is unlikely to be the first choice of buyers attracted by an R2R DAC and valve output stage, since those sections are most relevant to wired listening. The integrated battery has a capacity of 5.500 mAh. Shanling specifies up to eight hours of playback through the 3.5 mm output and up to 7,5 hours through the 4.4 mm Pentaconn connection. When used solely as a Bluetooth transmitter, the claimed operating time rises to as much as 20 hours.

For stationary use, the player can be connected to a USB-C power supply rated at 5 V and 2 A. External Power Mode bypasses the battery when supplying the audio circuitry, while continuing to charge it gently in the background.

This arrangement has two practical advantages. It avoids keeping the battery under continuous load during prolonged desktop use and ensures that the player remains charged when it is disconnected from the power supply. A tempered-glass cover above the mechanism leaves the rotating disc visible, retaining the deliberately mechanical appeal that distinguishes this category from file-based portable players.
