WiiM Home App – New Version Expands Cross-brand Multiroom Audio

WiiM is extending its Home App beyond the management of its own network players, streaming amplifiers and wireless speakers. Compatible products from Audio Pro and Pro-Ject Audio Systems can share the same multiroom environment, while WiiM Radio and new RoomFit capabilities broaden what the software can do. Room correction for multichannel sources and Hi-res Audio at up to 24 Bit 192 kHz with an integrated subwoofer are also supported, according to the manufacturer.

Story Highlights
  • The updated WiiM Home App places greater emphasis on mixed multiroom installations, allowing selected WiiM, Audio Pro and Pro-Ject Audio Systems products to be assigned to rooms, combined into groups and managed through a single interface. At the same time, WiiM Radio brings internet radio directly into the app, while RoomFit gains a user-adjustable target curve, support for multichannel sources and Hi-res Audio at up to 24 Bit 192 kHz when room correction and a subwoofer are active.

A multiroom platform becomes considerably more useful when the choice of hardware is not confined to one manufacturer. This is the direction WiiM is taking with the latest version of the WiiM Home App: rather than merely adding another group of functions for its own streaming products, the company is strengthening the app’s role as the control centre for a broader audio ecosystem.

Selected network players, streaming amplifiers and wireless speakers from Audio Pro and Pro-Ject Audio Systems can now be organised alongside WiiM components. That gives users more freedom to choose the appropriate solution for each room – from a portable speaker for the terrace to an active stereo system, a conventional passive-speaker setup or a soundbar-based living-room system.

The update also develops the app as a tool for sound adjustment. WiiM Radio is now integrated directly, while RoomFit receives a configurable target curve and can be used with multichannel material. The result is an app intended not only to distribute music, but also to take a more active role in configuring and tuning increasingly complex systems.

When the App Becomes the Common Ground

The practical value of the WiiM Home App no longer rests solely on how many functions it offers for an individual streamer or amplifier. Its more significant role is to provide a common operating environment for products that address very different rooms and listening habits.

Audio Pro contributes a broad selection of wireless products, including compact speakers, active stereo pairs, floorstanding speakers and a battery-powered model suitable for use in the garden or on a terrace. Pro-Ject Audio Systems approaches the same ecosystem from a more traditional HiFi direction, with network players and streaming amplifiers designed to become part of systems using passive loudspeakers.

WiiM’s own range fills several positions between these two approaches. Its network players can add streaming to an existing system, its amplifiers provide compact Just Add Speakers solutions, and products such as the WiiM Bar and WiiM Sub Pro extend the platform into TV audio and multichannel applications.

Bringing these categories together does not make every product identical. Displays, touch controls, preset buttons and support for technologies such as Apple AirPlay 2 still depend on the individual component. The advantage lies in being able to manage compatible devices through the same app without forcing every room into precisely the same hardware concept.

Internet Radio Without Leaving WiiM Home

WiiM Radio introduces direct access to internet radio stations within the WiiM Home App. Stations can be selected and browsed by genre, keeping radio playback inside the same interface used for streaming services, device control and multiroom management.

That integration is particularly useful once several zones are involved. A station can be assigned to one room or reproduced across a group of compatible devices in different parts of the home. On products equipped with preset buttons, selected stations, playlists or other sources can also be recalled without first opening the app on a smartphone.

The feature does not attempt to reinvent internet radio. Its purpose is more practical: radio becomes another native source within the WiiM environment rather than a service that requires a separate application and another operating routine.

RoomFit Moves Beyond Automatic Correction

RoomFit uses the microphone built into a smartphone to measure the playback environment and compensate for the influence of the room and loudspeaker placement. With the updated WiiM Home App, automatic correction is supplemented by an adjustable target curve.

This distinction matters. Automatic room correction aims to provide a technically sensible starting point, but that result does not necessarily reflect every listener’s preferences or the requirements of every room. The target curve gives users an additional means of shaping the tonal balance after measurement, without abandoning the underlying acoustic correction.

According to WiiM, RoomFit can now also process multichannel sources, including material reproduced within a 5.1 system. This pushes the technology beyond conventional two-channel configurations and makes it relevant to systems combining music playback with television and home cinema.

WiiM also states that Hi-res Audio at up to 24 Bit 192 kHz remains available when RoomFit is active and a subwoofer has been incorporated into the system. The exact range of functions will nevertheless depend on the capabilities of the individual components, their firmware and the way the complete system has been configured.

Different Rooms, Different Types of Audio System

Within the WiiM Home App, compatible products can be assigned to individual rooms, grouped for synchronised multiroom playback or combined as stereo pairs. Individual sound settings can be retained for each zone, while different streaming services may be used simultaneously in separate rooms.

That creates room for a more realistic approach to whole-home audio. A compact wireless speaker may be entirely appropriate for a kitchen, while the main living area can accommodate an active stereo pair or a system based on separate electronics and passive loudspeakers. A battery-powered speaker can cover outdoor listening, while a soundbar takes care of television sound elsewhere.

The Pro-Ject Wireless Box E occupies an unusual position within this selection. Designed as a plug-in module for a passive loudspeaker, it provides a route for incorporating an existing passive design as a wirelessly controlled zone. The WiiM Home App can therefore reach beyond complete streaming speakers and electronics, allowing selected conventional loudspeakers to remain in use.

Streaming Services Remain a Central Part of the Platform

WiiM states that its ecosystem supports more than 20 streaming services and protocols. The list includes Spotify Connect with lossless playback, TIDAL Connect, Amazon Music Cast, Qobuz Connect, Google Cast, Roon and UPnP. Selected components from WiiM, Audio Pro and Pro-Ject Audio Systems also support Apple AirPlay 2.

Qobuz gains a more comprehensive role in the revised app. Qobuz Radio Streams can be started directly from WiiM Home, while Qobuz Connect allows playback to be transferred from the Qobuz app to a compatible device.

Spotify Connect with lossless playback and Qobuz Connect had already been introduced for compatible WiiM OS products through earlier firmware updates. Gapless playback is also said to be available for playlists and radio streams.

The range of protocols is important because the WiiM Home App is not the only possible way to start music. Connect-based services allow users to remain inside the native app of the respective provider, while Roon, Google Cast, Apple AirPlay 2 and UPnP address further playback environments. Which options are available in a particular room still depends on the product installed there.

Price & Availability

The extended WiiM Home App is available now for devices running Apple iOS and Google Android, according to the distributor. It is offered as a free download.

The precise functions available in an individual installation may vary according to the products involved, their firmware versions and the chosen system configuration. WiiM did not provide a specific version number for the announced release.

Getting to the Point

The most important aspect of this WiiM Home App update is not a single new function. It is the way WiiM combines broader hardware compatibility with more capable system configuration.

WiiM Radio keeps another frequently used source inside the central interface, while the enhanced RoomFit options make the app more relevant to listeners who want to adjust the result rather than accept a fully automatic correction without further input. Multichannel support and Hi-res Audio at up to 24 Bit 192 kHz with an active subwoofer also extend the platform into more ambitious installations.

Above all, compatibility with selected Audio Pro and Pro-Ject Audio Systems products makes mixed multiroom systems easier to plan. Users can choose a compact speaker for one space, a classic stereo configuration for another and a soundbar-based system elsewhere without abandoning a common control environment. That is a more convincing definition of multiroom flexibility than merely offering several variations of the same device – provided the required feature is supported by every component involved.
