Pro-Ject Debut Carbon The Original – The Classic Among Turntables Returns, Technically Refined

Pro-Ject's new Debut Carbon The Original is a belt-driven turntable that spends its engineering effort on mechanics rather than convenience features. It combines a 1.7 kg steel platter, an 8.6-inch one-piece carbon tonearm and a motor fed by an internal DC/AC generator, and it arrives with a pre-adjusted Pro-Ject Pick it S2 MM cartridge. We look at what the Austrian manufacturer has changed in a model line that has sold more than a million units, and where its deliberately minimalist approach draws the line.

Story Highlights
  • The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon The Original is a belt-drive turntable with an 8.6-inch one-piece carbon tonearm, a 1.7 kg steel platter, a TPE-decoupled motor controlled by a DC/AC generator and a pre-mounted Pro-Ject Pick it S2 MM cartridge made by Ortofon. It is manufactured in Europe, comes in high-gloss black, matt black or walnut veneer, includes an acrylic dust cover and a felt mat, and is available now through authorised dealers at a recommended price of € 599,-.

Few model names carry as much weight at Pro-Ject Audio Systems as Debut. When the Austrian company introduced the line in 1998, the aim was to make properly engineered analogue playback affordable for a wide audience, and company founder and CEO Heinz Lichtenegger arguably helped lay the ground for the vinyl revival we are seeing today. The Debut Carbon of 2012, with its carbon-fibre tonearm, carried that idea forward. Now Pro-Ject Audio Systems returns to the family’s roots with the Debut Carbon The Original, a refined take on the classic that concentrates on what matters most in a good HiFi turntable.

Key Facts – Pro-Ject Debut Carbon The Original

  • Belt-driven HiFi turntable with manual speed change
  • 8.6-inch carbon tonearm, tube and headshell made in one piece
  • TPE-damped counterweight and adaptive anti-skating
  • 1.7 kg steel platter on a fibreglass-reinforced sub-platter
  • AC synchronous motor driven by a DC/AC generator
  • Pre-mounted Pro-Ject Pick it S2 MM moving-magnet cartridge
  • Low-resonance MDF plinth and TPE-decoupled motor suspension
  • Three finishes, manufactured in Europe

Starting at the Business End: Tonearm and Cartridge

The feature that gives the Debut Carbon The Original its name is the 8.6-inch carbon tonearm. Tube and headshell are formed from a single piece of carbon fibre, which, according to Pro-Ject, delivers high rigidity with low moving mass. The arm sits in a solid aluminium bearing block milled by CNC, and an adaptive anti-skating mechanism keeps the stylus tracking evenly across the groove.

The counterweight is damped with TPE. Pro-Ject states that this reduces tonearm and cartridge resonances by up to 50 per cent.

For an easy start, the turntable leaves the factory with a Pro-Ject Pick it S2 MM already fitted and set up. The moving-magnet cartridge is built by Ortofon to Pro-Ject’s specification. It has an elliptical stylus and uses Ortofon’s Split-Pole-Pin technology, which is intended to give the frequency response as linear a course as possible. A semi-balanced Pro-Ject Connect it Phono E RCA cable with gold-plated RCA plugs, designed specifically for phono connections, is included.

The cartridge is not a dead end. The Debut Carbon The Original can in principle be upgraded for balanced signal transmission, although that requires a suitable MC cartridge or the Pro-Ject Pick it PRO Balanced, a matching platter and the appropriate cable.

Platter, Motor and the Matter of Speed Stability

A 300 mm steel platter weighing 1.7 kg provides a comparatively high rotating mass. It rests on a sub-platter made of fibreglass-reinforced ABS, while a stainless-steel axle runs in a brass bushing. A precision belt transfers the drive, and a special TPE suspension isolates the motor mechanically from the plinth.

Pro-Ject has paid particular attention to motor control. The AC synchronous motor is not run straight from the mains frequency. Instead, an internal DC/AC generator creates a defined alternating-current signal from a DC supply, which, according to the manufacturer, keeps motor speed constant regardless of fluctuations in the mains. Together with the heavy platter and the mechanical decoupling, this is meant to give smooth running and low speed variation. The published figures are ±0.17 per cent wow and flutter at 33 1/3 rpm and ±0.15 per cent at 45 rpm, with speed deviation of ±0.50 and ±0.60 per cent respectively.

There is a trade-off. Both speeds, 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, are selected by moving the belt by hand; the Debut Carbon The Original has no electronic speed switching.

A Plinth Without Frills

The plinth is made of solid MDF and machined with CNC precision. Its construction is deliberately simple and avoids unnecessary cavities, which Pro-Ject says should provide a low-resonance foundation for the entire drive.

Looks, Finishes and What Is in the Box

In its styling, Pro-Ject stays true to the clean, minimalist design language of the Debut series. The turntable is offered in high-gloss black, matt black and real walnut veneer. A removable acrylic dust cover, a felt mat, a single adapter and the power supply are all included. According to the manufacturer, production takes place in Europe.

How the Debut Story Began

The history of the Debut series goes back to 1998. Back then, Heinz Lichtenegger and his British distributor Laurence Armstrong developed the idea of a turntable that would marry audiophile ambition with an affordable price. The Debut Carbon followed in 2012, and its carbon tonearm became a defining trait of the whole range.

More than a million turntables have been sold over upwards of 25 years, making the Debut family one of the company’s most successful. The new Debut Carbon The Original continues that tradition while adopting current engineering solutions aimed at mechanical precision and the reduction of unwanted resonances.

All Benefits at a Glance

  • Proven pedigree: the design draws on the successful Debut tradition and keeps its focus on high-quality analogue playback.
  • Low-resonance tonearm: the one-piece carbon construction combines low mass with high rigidity.
  • Controlled speed stability: a heavy steel platter and a DC/AC generator set the stage for an even drive.
  • Mechanical decoupling: TPE elements limit the transmission of unwanted vibration.
  • Ready to play: the pre-mounted, pre-adjusted MM cartridge makes set-up straightforward.
  • Room to grow: the cartridge can be swapped, and balanced signal routing is possible with suitable components.
  • Classic looks: three finishes make it easy to fit different living spaces.
  • Sensible positioning: a high-grade mechanical specification at a comparatively moderate price.

Price and Availability

The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon The Original is available now from authorised specialist dealers. Pro-Ject Audio Systems, the Austrian manufacturer, quotes a recommended retail price of € 599,-. Buyers can choose between high-gloss black, matt black and real walnut veneer.

Getting to the Point

With the Debut Carbon The Original, Pro-Ject Audio Systems goes back to the qualities that made the Debut series a success in the first place: sound mechanical construction, quality components and an affordable price. It is welcome that the company has not piled on convenience features and has instead put its engineering effort where it counts on a classic turntable. The carbon tonearm, the heavy steel platter and the carefully controlled motor make the new model an interesting proposition for demanding vinyl enthusiasts. That the speed still has to be changed by hand fits the purist concept just as well.
