Rega Planar 3 RS Edition – Elegant look, remarkable features

At first glance, the new Rega Planar 3 RS Edition stands out from the previously available Rega Planar 3 model with its particularly elegant appearance, as it has a special satin finish made of brushed aluminium on the top of its chassis. But that is by no means all that characterises the Rega Planar 3 RS Edition from Rega Research Limited as a special turntable.

Story Highlights
  • A satin finish in brushed aluminium is just the visual highlight of the new Rega Planar 3 RS Edition, which also boasts a number of other special features.

The Rega Planar 3 is regarded as a very successful turntable from Rega Research Limited, as it offers many features at a very attractive price that are fully in line with the special design philosophy of the British specialist for record players. Even if the Rega Planar 3 can still be categorised in the upper entry-level segment, the quality of this turntable is still a very fine solution.

Building on the Rega Planar 3, Rega Research Limited now presents the new Rega Planar 3 RS Edition, a turntable that incorporates key features of its larger sibling, a very special design and a brand new pickup system.

RS stands for Special Edition – HPL plinth with brushed aluminium surface

How could it be otherwise, the abbreviation RS in the name of the new turntable from Rega Research Limited stands for Special Edition and refers to the fact that this is a very special version of the Rega Planar 3.

For the first time, a special high-pressure laminate is used here, which is normally used in the production of the Rega Planar 6, Rega Planar 8 and Rega Planar 10 turntables. The manufacturer itself refers to this as a so-called HPL plinth.

This enables the company to achieve a particularly high level of rigidity with a very low mass, the basis for the design philosophy for record players laid down by company founder Roy Gandy.

But that’s not all, the top of the chassis of the Rega Planar 3 RS Edition has a particularly elegant finish, using aluminium with a brushed surface to create a satin look.

The base of the housing is black with a high-gloss finish, which creates a particularly attractive contrast in combination with the satin finish on the top described above and makes the drive a real eye-catcher.

Drive with EBLT reference drive belt and specially tuned power supply

The drive of the new Rega Planar 3 RS Edition also differs from the regular standard model, although a glass platter is of course also used here and a belt drive via a sub-platter is used.

However, according to the manufacturer, in this case it is an EBLT reference drive belt and the power supply is realised via a Rega Neo PSU MK2, which is specially tuned for each drive.

Rega RB330 tonearm and Rega Nd5 MM cartridge

The new Rega Planar 3 RS Edition is offered as a ready-to-play turntable, with not only a Rega RB330 tonearm fitted ex works, but also a cartridge system. The new Rega Nd5 MM cartridge from the brand new Rega Nd range is used.

Prices and availability

The new Rega Planar 3 RS Edition should be available from specialist retailers in the next few days, and the turntable will be supplied with a matching tinted dust cover. The recommended retail price is quoted at € 1.299,-.
