Cayin HA-1A MK3 – Compact Class A Valve Headphone Amplifier with Preamplifier Output

Four valves, Single-Ended Class A operation and purpose-built output transformers define the Cayin HA-1A MK3. Its two headphone outputs deliver up to 2,800 mW + 2,800 mW, while selectable impedance ranges cover models from 8 to 600 Ohm. A variable RCA output gives this deliberately analogue design a useful second role as the control centre of a compact audio system.

Story Highlights
  • The Cayin HA-1A MK3 dispenses with a DAC, streaming and digital processing in favour of a focused valve circuit with two analogue inputs. It is Cayin’s most compact HA Series model to date, yet its preamplifier output allows it to move beyond a dedicated headphone station and take charge of active speakers or an external power amplifier.

The appeal of the Cayin HA-1A MK3 begins with a refusal. It does not try to absorb every function that can be fitted into a modern desktop audio component. Cayin has instead built the most compact member of its stationary HA Series around a fully valve-based signal path, practical matching for very different headphones and sufficient output power for demanding listening setups.

That focus does not make it a one-purpose machine. Two selectable RCA inputs and a variable RCA output broaden its place in a system: the same volume control used for headphones can also govern active speakers or a separate power amplifier. The result is a compact analogue hub rather than a headphone amplifier burdened with digital extras its intended owner may neither need nor want.

The Absence of Digital Is the Point

There is no converter, network platform or digital tone processing inside the Cayin HA-1A MK3. Both source inputs are analogue RCA connections, selected from the front panel, and the amplifier concentrates on the route from line-level signal to headphones or preamplifier output.

This gives the product a particularly clear identity. It can sit downstream of a chosen DAC, streamer, CD player or another analogue source without duplicating their functions. For listeners who have already settled on their digital front end, that separation may be rather more valuable than another integrated feature list.

Four Valves Set the Operating Principle

Two JJ 12AU7/ECC82 valves handle voltage amplification, followed by two Electro-Harmonix EL84EH/6BQ5 valves in the power stage. The output section operates in Single-Ended Class A, while Cayin states that the internal connections are point-to-point hand-wired. An ALPS potentiometer controls listening level.

Cayin describes the intended presentation in terms of natural warmth, smoothness and musicality. Those remain manufacturer claims rather than listening findings; the tangible basis for this approach lies in the valve complement, Class A operation and transformer-coupled outputs.

Transformers Developed for One Job

The output transformers were designed specifically for the HA-1A MK3, according to Cayin. The voltage-amplification and power-amplification sections also receive separate power supplies, with a regulated high-voltage supply provided for the output stage. Internal screening between the functional sections is intended to limit mutual interference.

Its enclosure may occupy only 240 × 240 mm of desk space, but the amplifier is no lightweight at 8,8 kg. The height is 140 mm, and the openly arranged valves require adequate clearance around the unit for heat to escape.

From Low-Impedance Designs to 600 Ohm Classics

A 6.35 mm stereo jack provides the unbalanced headphone connection, while a 4-pin XLR socket offers the balanced option. Cayin specifies 2,500 mW + 2,500 mW at the former and 2,800 mW + 2,800 mW at the latter.

The output stage can be switched between two impedance ranges. Low covers headphones from 8 to 150 Ohm, while High is intended for models from 151 to 600 Ohm. This makes the HA-1A MK3 suitable for a broad range of dynamic headphones without asking one fixed output arrangement to cover every load.

Its quoted frequency response is 20 Hz to 24 kHz at ±3 dB. Cayin specifies an A-weighted signal-to-noise ratio of 110 dB for the headphone output and total harmonic distortion of 0.3 per cent at 1 kHz and 200 mW. At rated power, total harmonic distortion is stated to remain within five per cent.

A Headphone Amplifier That Can Run the System

The variable RCA output is what changes the HA-1A MK3 from a specialist into a possible system centre. It can feed active speakers directly or control the level sent to an external power amplifier, allowing the valve amplifier to remain at the heart of both private headphone listening and a compact loudspeaker setup.

For the preamplifier output, Cayin quotes a maximum output voltage of 5 V, gain of 9 dB and output impedance of 2 kOhm. This is not an additional fixed line output, but a level-controlled connection designed to follow the front-panel volume setting.

A Considered Start for Hot Glass

Switch-on muting and a start-up delay of approximately 50 seconds account for the valves’ warm-up phase. Cayin also supplies a removable metal cage to protect all four valves during operation. Buyers can choose between black and silver front-panel finishes.

The Most Important Advantages at a Glance

  • Broad headphone compatibility: Two impedance settings cover models rated from 8 to 600 Ohm.
  • Two established connection options: A 6.35 mm stereo jack and 4-pin XLR accommodate widely used stationary headphone cables.
  • Substantial output reserves: Up to 2,800 mW + 2,800 mW is available from the 4-pin XLR connection.
  • Uncompromised analogue concept: Four valves, Class A operation and dedicated output transformers define the circuit.
  • Useful preamplifier function: The variable RCA output can control active speakers or a separate power amplifier.
  • Compact footprint: The 240 × 240 mm chassis keeps the required desk or rack space modest.
  • Practical valve protection: Switch-on muting, delayed start-up and a removable metal cage are included.

Price & Availability

The Cayin HA-1A MK3 is offered in black and silver. It is already listed and available to order from Cayin’s German-language website for € 1.298,-, while international sales are to be handled by authorised Cayin distributors and specialist retailers.

Getting to the Point

The Cayin HA-1A MK3 has no interest in being a universal headphone amplifier with DAC, streaming and digital processing. Its attraction lies precisely in that restraint: Cayin concentrates on an analogue valve circuit, useful impedance matching and ample power for a wide selection of headphones. The variable preamplifier output is the decisive practical addition, turning this compact valve specialist into a credible control centre for an active-speaker desktop system as well.
