Topping Mini 500 – Compact Class D Power Amplifier with up to 2 x 250 Watts and Fully Balanced Circuit Design

Topping's Mini 500 packs a fully balanced Class D circuit with a native BTL design into a case weighing just 1.090 g. It delivers up to 2 x 250 watts into 4 ohms in stereo or 500 watts into 2 ohms as a mono block, and it can work either with its own analogue volume control or as a pure power stage. We look at what the figures promise, and where the small print on the measurement conditions matters.

Story Highlights
  • The Topping Mini 500 Fully Balanced Power Amplifier is a compact Class D power amplifier with a native BTL design that, according to Topping, delivers up to 2 x 250 watts into 4 ohms in stereo or 500 watts into 2 ohms in mono. It offers XLR, 6.3 mm jack and RCA inputs, a switchable volume control or BYPASS mode and a 12 V trigger input, and is available now in silver at a recommended price of € 229,- with a European mains connection.

Size no longer tells you much about what a HiFi component can do. Class D amplifiers in particular have shown that substantial output is possible with modest hardware and very little wasted energy. With the Mini 500 Fully Balanced Power Amplifier, Topping Electronics & Technology Co. Ltd. pushes that idea further: a small stereo power amplifier with fully balanced signal handling, generous output and a flexible feature set. What makes it particularly interesting is the price, which should appeal to ambitious HiFi enthusiasts watching their budget.

Output first: stereo power on a small footprint

The Mini 500 is easiest to appreciate with a glance at its power figures, because they sit oddly with its size and weight. In stereo operation Topping specifies 2 x 150 watts into 8 ohms and 2 x 250 watts into 4 ohms.

There is a catch, though. These maximum values are quoted at a THD+N of below 10 per cent, which is a long way from the conditions under which most of us would want to listen. Anyone judging how much continuous power is realistically usable in a demanding sound-quality context should keep that in mind.

Even so, the numbers make clear that the Mini 500 is not meant only for easy-to-drive compact speakers. The circuit is intended to hold enough reserve to control more demanding passive loudspeakers as well.

Two amplifiers, one pair of speakers: mono operation

The amplifier can also be switched to a mono mode. Here, Topping quotes a maximum of 300 watts into 4 ohms and 500 watts into 2 ohms, again at a THD+N of under 10 per cent.

That opens up an option beyond the single-box solution: two Mini 500 units, one per channel, with the left and right loudspeakers each driven by their own amplifier. This can make sense for a system that is expanded step by step, or wherever very compact mono blocks are wanted.

Circuit design: balanced from input to output

Underneath the small case sits a Class D circuit that is balanced throughout. According to Topping, differential signal processing runs from the input right through to the output stage, with the aim of suppressing interference and common-mode noise.

This is paired with a native BTL architecture. BTL stands for Bridge-Tied Load, a topology that allows high output voltage and, with it, solid power reserves in a compact build.

The measurements Topping publishes are ambitious. With a balanced input, the amplifier is said to reach a dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio of 126 dB each. Channel separation is given as up to -111 dB, and total harmonic distortion plus noise is stated at below 0.0004 per cent at 5 watts into 8 ohms.

These claims point to a carefully considered circuit layout. Measurements alone, however, can never settle how an amplifier actually sounds.

Connections and operating modes

On the input side, the Mini 500 is accommodating. Balanced sources connect to the combined XLR and 6,3 mm jack sockets, while unbalanced RCA inputs allow more conventional HiFi components to be integrated without fuss. A switch on the front selects between the two input types, so there is no need to reach around the back and swap cables. Passive speakers connect to speaker terminals that also accept banana plugs.

The amplifier offers two ways of working. In VOL mode, its integrated analogue volume control is active, which makes the Mini 500 a practical heart for a simple system. In BYPASS mode the control is taken out of the chain and the amplifier runs at a fixed maximum gain. This setting is intended for use with a dedicated preamplifier or a DAC with variable output level. The change between the two is made with a switch on the rear panel.

The Mini 500 can therefore serve as the central amplifier of a minimalist HiFi chain or as a straightforward power stage within a larger setup.

Aluminium case and thermal management

The all-aluminium case is more than a styling decision. Topping uses the metal’s high thermal conductivity to carry the heat produced in operation away efficiently, and integrated cooling structures help the process along. The idea is that the powerful circuit can run reliably in a small enclosure under suitable operating conditions.

At 1.090 g, the Mini 500 suits setups where space is tight, from a high-quality desktop HiFi system to an unobtrusive stereo installation in the living room.

The 12 V trigger input is a handy addition. It lets the power amplifier switch on together with source components or preamplifiers that provide a trigger output; alternatively, it can be operated in the conventional way with its power switch.

All benefits at a glance

  • Small footprint, serious headroom: up to 2 x 250 watts into 4 ohms in stereo, in a case weighing 1.090 g
  • Cleaner signal handling: differential processing from input to output, intended to keep interference down
  • Room to grow: use one unit in stereo, or add a second and run a pair as mono amplifiers
  • Fits what you already own: XLR, 6,3 mm jack and RCA inputs cover balanced and unbalanced sources alike
  • One box or part of a chain: analogue volume control for simple systems, BYPASS for use behind a preamplifier or a DAC with variable output
  • Built for compact spaces: aluminium construction that doubles as the route for heat to escape
  • Easy system integration: 12 V trigger input for switching on with the rest of the system
  • Price: capable amplifier technology at a recommended € 229,-

Price and availability

The Topping Mini 500 Fully Balanced Power Amplifier is available now at a recommended retail price of € 229,-. It comes in silver and is supplied with a mains connection for the European market.

Getting to the point

The Topping Mini 500 Fully Balanced Power Amplifier is a good illustration of how far modern amplifier technology can be miniaturised. A fully balanced design, a stereo or mono configuration that can be chosen as needed and a generous selection of connections make it an appealing package. That TOPPING Electronics & Technology Co. Ltd. asks only € 229,- for it makes this small power amplifier all the more attractive. Whatever one makes of the impressive output figures, though, it is worth keeping their measurement conditions in mind.
