Technics has resisted the temptation to redesign the earbuds themselves too extensively. The Technics EAH-AZ100 are supplied in their familiar black finish, with the exclusive charging case providing the most obvious visual link to the Rolling Stones. Adaptive noise cancelling and Voice Focus AI

Full Adaptive Digital Hybrid Noise Cancelling combines feedforward and feedback processing. The system is designed to react in real time to both the fit of the earbuds and the surrounding noise.

For telephone calls, Technics employs multiple microphones alongside signal processing described as Voice Focus AI. Speech and environmental noise are analysed separately so that the wearer’s voice should remain intelligible even in noisy surroundings.

An Interaction Mode makes it possible to hold a brief conversation without removing the earbuds. Music playback pauses, while the transparency function is adjusted to emphasise voices. Wearing sensors can also stop playback automatically when an earbud is removed and resume it after the earbud is put back in place.

LDAC, LC3, Auracast and three simultaneous connections

Wireless connectivity is based on Bluetooth 5.3, with support for SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3. LDAC provides the high-resolution wireless option, while LC3 forms part of Bluetooth LE Audio and is intended to deliver efficient playback with low latency.

Auracast is supported as well, allowing the headphones to receive compatible public or private Bluetooth audio broadcasts. Such systems are becoming increasingly common for guided tours in museums and can also be used in theatres, where they may help visitors with impaired hearing follow a performance.

Bluetooth Multipoint permits simultaneous connections to as many as three devices. In everyday use, this makes it possible to move between a smartphone, notebook and tablet without establishing each connection again. Up to ten devices can be paired in total.

Dolby Atmos and Dolby Head Tracking

The Technics EAH-AZ100 also support spatial playback optimised for Dolby Atmos. Dolby Head Tracking is available when the headphones are used with a compatible source device, adjusting the spatial presentation in response to the listener’s head movements.

These facilities are not confined to music. They can also be used with films, television series and suitably produced concert recordings.

Up to ten hours of battery life

With the AAC codec and noise cancelling active, Technics specifies up to ten hours of playback from the earbuds. The charging case increases the total to as much as 28 hours. Switching noise cancelling off raises those figures to twelve hours and 29 hours respectively.

Using LDAC reduces battery life to approximately seven hours with noise cancelling, or 18 hours including the charging case. Without noise cancelling, Technics quotes eight hours from the earbuds and up to 19 hours in conjunction with the case.

A 15-minute quick charge is said to provide approximately 90 minutes of playback when using AAC with noise cancelling switched on. The charging case can be powered via USB-C or wirelessly from a compatible Qi charging pad.

Compact dimensions and IPX4 protection

Each earbud measures approximately 21 × 26 × 25 mm and weighs around 5.9 g. The charging case measures approximately 69 × 36 × 27 mm and weighs about 42 g.

The earbuds carry an IPX4 rating for protection against splashing water. This protection does not extend to the charging case. Five sizes of ear tip are included, ranging from XS to L, together with a short USB-C cable.
