Sony HT-S2000 3.1 channel soundbar with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X

It is the latest member of the Sony Corporation's soundbar family, which the Japanese consumer electronics company is now presenting with the new Sony HT-S2000. The manufacturer is convinced that it will be able to deliver cinema-quality surround sound in the living room.

Story Highlights
  • The new Sony Corporation Sony HT-S2000 soundbar is designed to provide cinema-quality surround sound in the living room.

With the new Sony HT-S2000 3.1-channel soundbar, Sony Corporation is expanding its product range with a solution that once again brings nothing less than cinema-quality surround sound into the living room. And it does so with minimal effort, as the manufacturer explicitly emphasises, and with particularly simple control.

The new Sony HT-S2000 is the first soundbar to be compatible with the new Sony Home Entertainment Connect app.

Sony HT-S2000 with impressive surround sound

There are a number of technologies that Sony Corporation cites as a guarantee that the new Sony HT-S2000 can deliver the promised impressive surround sound in any living room.

First of all, there is the Sony Vertical Surround Engine and the Sony S-Force PRO Front Surround Technology, which offer thrilling surround sound, according to the manufacturer’s promise.

The Sony HT-S2000 is capable of reproducing content up to Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, whereby the Sony Vertical Surround Engine is responsible for the imaging from above and the Sony S-Force PRO Front Surround Technology for the imaging from the sides.

Upmixer for content in stereo

A special feature of the new Sony HT-S2000 3.1-channel soundbar is that it can also process content in stereo for surround sound. For this purpose, audio signals from video or music are analysed in real time using unique technologies from Sony Corporation and separated into their individual components, such as voice, sound effects and musical instruments, and then reproduced via the 3.1-channel system of the Sony HT-S2000.

For clear dialogue and rich bass

Whatever the content, the new Sony HT-S2000 3.1-channel soundbar is said to be designed for maximum speech intelligibility. A special centre speaker is supposed to take care of this, with overall reliance on drivers in the form of so-called Sony X-Balanced Speaker Unit for high sound pressure with low distortion.

The new Sony HT-S2000 3.1-channel soundbar also has a dual subwoofer, so it should be able to provide rich, full sound on its own. However, the system can be expanded with the optional Sony SA-SW3 and Sony SA-SW5 wireless subwoofers.

And if you want an even more immersive cinema experience, simply add the optional Sony SA-RS3S wireless rear speakers, says the manufacturer, who also emphasises the optimal connection of the new Sony HT-S2000 with a compatible Sony BRAVIA TV. The soundbar’s settings can then be accessed directly via the TV’s quick settings.

HDMI, S/PDIF and Bluetooth

The primary input is of course HDMI, whereby this is designed as eARC, i.e. enhanced Audio Return Channel, and supports HDMI CEC for central control. In this respect, Sony Corporation naturally relies on its own interpretation in the form of Sony BRAVIA Sync. An optical S/PDIF interface is also available and the system supports Bluetooth to use smartphones and tablets directly as a source for music streaming.

New Sony Home Entertainment Connect App

The new Sony Home Entertainment Connect app is designed to make setting up and using the soundbar as easy as possible, according to the manufacturer’s promise. It guides you through the initial setup, helps with troubleshooting and allows you to control the volume, sound fields and other settings directly from your smartphone. In addition, the app offers useful information, such as recommendations on functions, new software updates and more. It is available for Apple iOS and Google Android.

Prices and availability

The new Sony HT-S2000 3.1-channel soundbar is expected to be in stores from mid-June 2023. Sony Corporation is quoting a recommended retail price of € 499,- for it.

Getting to the point

Surround sound, even cinema-ready surround sound based on Dolby Atmos and DTS:X is to be achieved with the new Sony HT-S2000 3.1-channel soundbar from a single device, as Sony Corporation promises for this latest solution from the Japanese consumer electronics company. However, the compact solution can actually be upgraded to a full surround sound system with optional subwoofer and rear speaker.
