Rega Nd3 Moving Magnet Cartridge – Ten years of development

According to Rega Research Limited, the new Rega Nd3 Moving Magnet Cartridge, which was presented for the first time at the High-end 2024, is a cartridge system for which a particularly high level of commitment was invested in its development.

It is exciting that the English HiFi manufacturer Rega Research Limited describes the latest cartridge system from its own company in particularly laudatory terms, as the new Rega Nd3 Moving Magnet Cartridge is a solution that, due to its price, is more likely to be assigned to the entry-level segment.

Nevertheless, according to Rega Research Limited, no less than a decade of development has been invested to realise a solution that sets new standards in its class with the new Rega Nd3 Moving Magnet Cartridge.

More than ten years of development to set new standards

Rega Research Limited literally states that more than ten years were invested in the development of the new Rega Nd3 Moving Magnet Cartridge, which celebrated its premiere at the High-end 2024 in Munich, whereby it was not just about this one cartridge system, but the topic of moving magnet cartridges as a whole.

The new Rega Nd3 Moving Magnet Cartridge is therefore, one can assume, only the beginning of a completely new product line, the Rega Nd Range, as it will probably be called.

The basis for this is a technology for which a patent application has been filed and which centres on a particularly sophisticated generator. It is certain that the Rega Nd Range will be the first pickup systems to use ultra-high power neodymium magnets, as the manufacturer itself describes it.

Every cartridge is handmade

Each pickup system is manufactured by hand at Rega Research Limited, which is the basis for the best quality. A completely redesigned generator geometry is used to ensure perfect symmetry and thus outstanding channel balance.

The new Rega Nd3 cartridge also has an optimised pole spacing for outstanding linearity and equally outstanding crosstalk behaviour. This new cartridge is manufactured using miniaturised parallel coils wound in-house by Rega Research Limited from 38 μm cross-section wire with only 1.275 turns. This results in a generator with low inductance and impedance, which enables a significantly improved high frequency response, according to the manufacturer’s promise.

The new Rega Nd3 Moving Magnet Cartridge uses a stylus with an elliptical cut and is packaged in a so-called glass-filled PPS body, which is modelled on the housings of MC pickup systems.

Prices and availability

The new Rega Nd3 Moving Magnet Cartridge should be available soon, with a price of GBP 178,- for this cartridge system. The manufacturer emphasises that it is primarily intended to be used as standard equipment for turntables such as the Rega Plan 2 or Rega Planar 3.

Getting to the point

The new Rega Nd3 Moving Magnet Cartridge is not just a new MM cartridge system from England, Rega Research Limited wants to establish a completely new product line with a special generator for the highest quality at an attractive price. They even go so far as to speak of a product line that sets new standards in its class. To guarantee this, the company has invested over a decade in development.
