One Small Box, Two Quite Different Jobs

Its two operating modes address different systems and, crucially, leave the user to decide which component performs the actual audio conversion.
Expansion Mode is intended for compatible HiFi Rose players whose audio hardware remains desirable but whose streaming facilities no longer include every current Connect service. Standalone Mode broadens the proposition to almost any system with a suitable analogue or digital input.

Expansion Mode – Updating a HiFi Rose Player
In Expansion Mode, the RW800 connects to a compatible HiFi Rose streamer over USB-C. It handles access to newer streaming protocols and transfers the audio data to the host component without loss.
Signal processing and D/A conversion remain the responsibility of the existing HiFi Rose player. Its converter architecture, analogue output stage and wider system integration therefore stay in use, while the RW800 supplies those network functions that apparently cannot be added through a conventional software update.

Standalone Mode – Streaming for a Conventional HiFi System
Standalone Mode gives the RW800 a considerably wider potential audience. Here, it operates as an independent network streamer and connects directly to an integrated amplifier, preamplifier or pair of active loudspeakers through its stereo RCA output.
Internal D/A conversion is handled by an ESS ES9280, while a Texas Instruments SRC4382 performs the digital signal processing. The analogue output provides 2 V RMS, corresponding to the established line level expected by conventional audio components.
The internal converter is not mandatory. An optical S/PDIF output allows the RW800 to feed an existing DAC, turning the unit into a particularly compact streaming transport. This is likely to be the preferred arrangement in more ambitious systems where the owner already has a converter worth retaining.
An optical input is also provided for an additional digital source. The RW800 can consequently serve as more than a simple endpoint, although its limited selection of physical connections keeps the emphasis firmly on streaming.
Connect Services Without an Unnecessary Detour
TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect and Spotify Connect allow listeners to select the RW800 directly from the applications supplied by the respective services. Browsing, recommendations, playlists and playback control therefore remain within familiar interfaces rather than being reproduced inside a manufacturer-specific app.
This approach is particularly useful as the original service applications generally receive catalogue and discovery functions first. Spotify Lossless is also listed among the supported facilities, giving the RW800 access to Spotify’s higher-quality playback option.
Apple AirPlay 2 and Google Cast provide further ways of sending music from compatible devices. DLNA/UPnP covers libraries stored on local servers and network shares, while Bluetooth 5.2 offers a quick connection for smartphones, tablets and guests.
The selection is broad enough to accommodate most established streaming habits without tying the unit to a single ecosystem.
Roon Ready for Main and Secondary Systems
Roon Ready certification allows the RW800 to operate as an endpoint within a Roon system. Playback, library navigation and zone management can therefore be handled through Roon, with the audio stream sent directly to the module.
This facility is relevant in both operating modes. The RW800 can give a compatible HiFi Rose player access to the updated streaming platform, or become an affordable Roon endpoint for a second system, desktop installation or pair of active loudspeakers.
Roon Ready support is not assured at this price level, and its inclusion gives the RW800 a more serious role than that of a simple consumer casting adapter.
Ethernet, Dual-band WiFi and the ROSE AIR App
The RW800 can join the network through 10/100 Base-T Ethernet or dual-band WiFi supporting IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac. Ethernet remains the obvious choice where a cable is readily available, while WiFi allows the module to be placed discreetly wherever the existing system leaves room for it.
Bluetooth 5.2 is supported with A2DP 1.4 and AVRCP 1.6.2. It is unlikely to be the first choice for critical listening, but remains practical when a direct and uncomplicated wireless connection matters more than access to the full network platform.
Setup and central management are handled through the ROSE AIR app for Apple iOS and Google Android. The application provides the operating interface for the AIR Lite platform and configures the RW800 for its chosen role.
Hi-res Audio up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD128
The HiFi Rose RW800 processes Linear PCM at resolutions up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD up to DSD128. These maximum values depend on the interface being used: the optical S/PDIF connections support Linear PCM up to 32-bit/192kHz.
Supported formats include FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, LPCM, MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, Opus and APE. The unit is therefore not limited to commercial streaming platforms and can also reproduce music held on compatible local network storage.
HiFi Rose specifies a frequency response from 10 Hz to 50 kHz within ±1 dB, a signal-to-noise ratio of 119 dB and dynamic range of 120 dB. THD+N is quoted at 0.0008 per cent at 1 kHz and an output level of 2 V RMS.
Figures alone do not determine the quality of a converter, particularly in such an inexpensive product, but the specifications indicate that the analogue output is intended as a genuine working facility rather than a token addition. Owners of more ambitious DACs can use the optical output instead.
Compact Enough to Disappear
Measuring 110 × 115.5 × 27 mm and weighing only 245 g, the RW800 requires very little space. Its black enclosure is made from a polycarbonate and ABS composite and deliberately omits the generous display technology associated with larger HiFi Rose network players.
That omission suits the intended application. The RW800 is a functional addition rather than a component designed to dominate the equipment rack, and it can be placed beside an amplifier or hidden behind another device.
Power is supplied over USB-C at 5 V and 1.5 A. In Expansion Mode, the connected HiFi Rose component can supply the necessary power directly. Standalone operation requires a suitable external USB power supply.
Consumption is specified at less than 1.6 W in network standby, below 2 W while idle and under 2.5 W during playback.

Conclusion
The HiFi Rose RW800 raises a mildly uncomfortable question. Should a premium network player require an external module merely to accommodate current Connect services? Ideally, it should not. Network hardware, however, remains constrained by processors, operating systems, certification requirements and platform decisions that cannot invariably be resolved with another firmware update.
When those limits have been reached, a compact and comparatively inexpensive expansion module is far more defensible than expecting the owner to replace an otherwise satisfactory component. Expansion Mode preserves the existing conversion and analogue stages, which is precisely what such an upgrade should do.
Standalone Mode may ultimately prove even more important. It turns the RW800 into a remarkably versatile entry-level network source with analogue and digital outputs, local network playback, the principal Connect services and Roon Ready certification. Its internal ESS converter makes the unit usable on its own, while the optical output leaves room for a more ambitious DAC elsewhere in the system.
Citech Co. Ltd. has resisted presenting the HiFi Rose RW800 as a miniature version of its larger network players. It is a practical, tightly focused component that performs two useful jobs and asks relatively little money for either of them.
