Cayin BTC-2 – Compact Bluetooth Preamp, DAC and Headphone Amplifier for Desktop Audio

The Cayin BTC-2 is not simply another Bluetooth receiver, nor merely a small DAC for the desk. Cayin Audio has built a compact component that brings together wireless streaming, digital conversion, analogue input, preamplifier operation and proper headphone connectivity in a single, space-saving unit. For listeners using active speakers, wired headphones or a compact second system, it could be a very neat way of bringing modern sources into a more traditional audio setup.

Story Highlights
  • The Cayin BTC-2 is aimed at the increasingly important space between computer audio, mobile streaming and classic HiFi. Its appeal lies less in one headline feature than in the sheer concentration of useful audio functions inside a modest desktop-sized enclosure.

Desktop Audio has grown up. What was once a small amplifier beside a computer has become a genuinely serious listening category, where good headphones, active loudspeakers, smartphones, tablets, streamers and the occasional analogue source all meet within arm’s reach. The Cayin BTC-2 enters precisely this territory: a compact, multi-purpose component from Cayin Audio that refuses to sit neatly in just one product category.

It is a Bluetooth receiver, a D/A converter, a preamplifier and a headphone amplifier in one. More importantly, it is designed for the way many people actually listen today: not always in front of a full-size HiFi rack, but at a desk, in a study, beside a laptop, or in a compact second system where flexibility matters as much as absolute scale.

Cayin BTC-2 – A compact Desktop Audio solution for flexible systems

Cayin Audio, a brand of Zhuhai Spark Electronic Equipment Co. Ltd., is expanding its range with a notably compact Desktop Audio component. The Cayin BTC-2 is intended to bring together several source types and listening scenarios in a very small footprint: Bluetooth streaming from a smartphone or tablet, digital playback via S/PDIF coaxial, analogue sources via Cinch, headphone listening, and signal routing to active loudspeakers or an existing HiFi system.

That makes the Cayin BTC-2 particularly relevant for studies, home offices, small listening positions and compact second systems. It also makes sense wherever wired headphones or active loudspeakers are already in use, but where modern wireless sources need to be added without turning the system into a cable-heavy installation.

It can, of course, also act as a practical add-on for a classic HiFi setup. Yet its natural habitat is Desktop Audio: short signal paths, several source options, direct control at the listening position and a footprint small enough for everyday use.

Bluetooth 5.1 with SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD and LDAC

For wireless playback, Cayin Audio uses Bluetooth 5.1. The supported codecs are SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD and LDAC, giving the Cayin BTC-2 a broader codec base than one might expect from a small, aggressively priced component. Bluetooth signal reception and decoding are handled by a Qualcomm QCC5125 chipset, responsible for wireless connectivity, decoding and signal management.

This is exactly the sort of flexibility that suits desktop listening. Music can be sent quickly from a smartphone, tablet or computer without reconfiguring the entire system. At the same time, the Cayin BTC-2 is not limited to Bluetooth. It also provides S/PDIF coaxial and an analogue Cinch input, allowing it to work with more traditional sources.

ESS Technology ES9018K2M Sabre 32 Reference D/A converter

Digital conversion is handled by an ESS Technology ES9018K2M Sabre 32 Reference D/A converter. Via S/PDIF coaxial, the Cayin BTC-2 processes Linear PCM at up to 24 Bit and 192 kHz. In Bluetooth operation, signals up to 24 Bit and 96 kHz are supported, depending on codec, source device and signal format.

One of the more interesting details in this price class is the option to adjust the sonic character of the D/A converter using three digital filters. Via the supplied remote control, the listener can select different filter characteristics, ranging from Minimum Phase to steeper roll-off behaviour. This is not a substitute for system matching, of course, but it does provide a small and practical degree of fine-tuning.

Headphone outputs with 6,3 mm stereo jack and 4,4 mm Pentaconn

As a headphone amplifier, the Cayin BTC-2 is more than a token feature. On the front panel, it provides both a 6,3 mm stereo jack output and a balanced 4,4 mm Pentaconn connection. In balanced operation, Cayin Audio specifies an output power of 280 mW per channel.

According to the manufacturer, the analogue section uses an Alps potentiometer for volume control and a high-current output amplifier in a fully balanced circuit design. Cayin Audio also states that particular attention has been paid to shielding the analogue section in order to reduce interference.

Preamplifier, control centre and digital output

Beyond headphone use, the Cayin BTC-2 can also serve as a compact preamplifier. Active loudspeakers or an existing HiFi system can be driven via its analogue output stage, while source selection and volume control are handled either directly on the unit or via the supplied infrared remote control. Bluetooth playback control and DAC filter selection can also be managed from the listening position.

An OLED display shows the selected source and the incoming digital resolution. The Cayin BTC-2 also provides a digital S/PDIF output. According to the manufacturer, this output can also provide an A/D-converted signal, for instance when an analogue source is to be passed on digitally or recorded.

Price and availability

According to Cayin Audio, the Cayin BTC-2 will be available from May 2026 via Cayin Distribution and specialist retailers. The price is listed at € 198,-.

Getting to the point

The Cayin BTC-2 is not a large component for a conventional HiFi rack, and it is not trying to be. Its purpose is more precise: it is a compact Desktop Audio solution for everyday listening with headphones, active loudspeakers and a mix of modern and classic sources.

That is where its appeal lies. Bluetooth 5.1 with LDAC and aptX HD, an ESS Technology DAC, S/PDIF coaxial, an analogue Cinch input, preamplifier functionality and two headphone outputs make for a surprisingly dense feature set. It can certainly be used as a practical upgrade for existing HiFi components, but at its core the Cayin BTC-2 is a small, flexible Desktop Audio system with a very attractive price.
