The company Linkplay Technology Inc. never tires of endeavouring to establish itself on a broad front in the highly competitive market for streaming systems. What initially began with particularly attractively priced WiiM brand streaming clients is now a broad-based product portfolio that is constantly being expanded. As is now the case again at High-end 2025 in Munich.
The new WiiM Amp Ultra is a special device, a solution that promises very special features for Linplay Technology Inc. The manufacturer describes the new WiiM Amp Ultra as the company’s most sophisticated streaming amp to date, combining outstanding performance with precision to appeal to even the most demanding HiFi enthusiasts.
Comprehensive connectivity and flexible streaming
The new WiiM Amp Ultra is intended above all as a particularly versatile solution, with the manufacturer itself naturally focussing on the streaming options.
It can be integrated into the network either via an RJ45 Ethernet interface or an integrated WiFI module, allowing access to a wide range of platforms, including Google Cast, Amazon Alexa Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and UPnP as a dlna-certified streaming client. Direct integration into Roon from Roon Labs LLC. is also possible thanks to Roon Ready.
The WiiM Home app also offers a wide range of streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Spotify, TIDAL, Qobuz, Deezer, Pandora, iHearRadio, TuneIn and many more, making it what the manufacturer calls an All-in-One streaming hub.
Of course, the new WiiM Amp Ultra can be seen as part of a smart home, as it supports a wide range of voice control options via Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Siri using the WiiM Voice Remote 2 included in the scope of delivery.
If you want to integrate smartphones and tablets directly as a source, you can do so via Bluetooth 5.3 and the WiiM Amp Ultra offers an HDMI with ARC and HDMI CEC for connecting a TV. Thanks to Dolby Digital decoding and a separate subwoofer output, the WiiM Amp Ultra should be able to function as a small, fine interface for a compact home cinema through to a 5.1-channel surround sound installation.
Analogue sources can be integrated via a pair of RCA sockets and a further digital source via an optical S/PDIF interface.
High-quality, DSP-based signal processing
According to the manufacturer, the new WiiM Amp Ultra relies on high-quality, DSP-based signal processing, initially focussing on converters from the specialist ESS Technology Inc., namely the ESS ES9039Q2M SABRE DAC, which supports signals with up to 32 bits and 384 kHz.
Furthermore, two TI TPA3255 Class-D amplifiers and six TI OPA1612 operational amplifiers are used for extremely low distortion and a rich, detailed sound, according to the manufacturer, who also refers to the use of so-called Post Filter Feedback Technology for optimum control of any speaker system.
An automatic room calibration should always guarantee an optimum result and the developers at Linkplay Technology Inc. have not forgotten to include a parametric and graphic EQ for the WiiM Amp Ultra so that its reproduction can be customised to suit your own preferences.
Two times 100 watts or even two times 200 watts…
The data sheet states that the WiiM Amp Ultra can deliver two outputs of 100 watts to speaker systems with an impedance of 8 ohms and two outputs of 200 watts to speaker systems with an impedance of just 4 ohms. This is quite astonishing in this ‘weight class’, as the new WiiM Amp Ultra presents itself as an extremely compact, elegant solution with a unibody aluminium chassis and a front that features a 3.5-inch touchscreen display as well as a rotary encoder.
Prices and availability
The new WiiM Amp Ultra will probably not actually be available from specialist retailers until the third quarter of 2025, as the manufacturer explained during the presentation at High-end 2025. In this respect, it is also understandable that no price has been announced at this time.
