A company with a long history
As mentioned above, the history of the Onkyo brand goes back to the 1940s, specifically to 1946, when Takeshi Godai founded the Osaka Denki Onkyo Company and built it up into one of Japan’s leading consumer electronics companies.
In 1971, Takeshi Godai changed the name from Osaka Denki Onkyo Company to simply Onkyo, a name that means harmony of sound in Japanese and thus perfectly expresses the company’s mission, which is still valid today.
A new era
In 2021, the company attempted a fresh start after experiencing a great deal of turbulence due to various reorganisations and takeovers, by acquiring the Onkyo Home Entertainment Company as part of the VOXX International Corporation, which in turn founded the Premium Audio Company, to which Onkyo Corporation would belong in the future.
However, the sober conclusion to be drawn so far is that the new start has not really been a success, but this should now change.
It is a completely new era that is now being established, and the company is relying on a new brand identity for this. The Group even speaks of a bold new era, which at the same time honours the company’s 75-year heritage.
As a clear outward sign of this, a new logo is ready, with the Group saying that this new visual identity emphasises Onkyo’s commitment to combining cutting-edge technology with elegance and sophistication.
New products for CES 2025
More importantly, starting in 2025, the company intends to reorganise its product line-up, promising a variety of new solutions that are fully in line with current trends in consumer electronics.

Getting to the point
Unfortunately, it has to be said that the turbulence surrounding the Onkyo brand in recent years has caused massive damage to the brand and in some cases severely tarnished its image. It would therefore be high time to turn things around and return to calmer waters with a clear, new strategy. This is exactly what VOXX International Corporation is now promising, although a new logo for the brand alone will probably not be enough to make it successful again and equip it for the future.
