Nothing Ear (3a) – Nothing presents new true wireless in-ear headphones with hi-res audio, adaptive ANC and audio snapshot
The Nothing Ear (3a) is not trying to disappear quietly into a crowded True Wireless market. With LDAC, adaptive ANC, Bluetooth 6.0, Audio Snapshot and the familiar transparent Nothing design language, it makes a rather assertive case for itself. Add four colours, long battery life and a notably broad feature set, and this becomes one of the more interesting everyday earbuds in its class.
- Nothing Technologies Limited uses the Nothing Ear (3a) to sharpen the identity of its (a)-Series: accessible, visually distinctive and technically more ambitious than the price might suggest. The real point of interest lies not only in LDAC and ANC, but in how Nothing positions the earbuds as a daily audio tool for music, calls, notes, meetings and quick captured moments.
With the Nothing Ear (3a), Nothing Technologies Limited gives its successful (a)-Series a fresh turn, while staying faithful to the visual code that made the brand instantly recognisable: transparent surfaces, deliberate industrial styling and a refusal to look anonymous. The new True Wireless in-ear headphones combine a 12 mm dynamic driver, Hi-res Audio Wireless via LDAC, adaptive ANC rated at up to 45 dB and detailed control through the Nothing X App. New functions such as Audio Snapshot and Call Recording move the product beyond the usual music-and-calls brief, allowing short audio moments, conversations and meetings to be captured directly from the earbuds. Alongside Black, White and Yellow, the Nothing Ear (3a) is also available in Pink for the first time. At € 99,-, Nothing Technologies Limited is clearly aiming at a broad everyday audience, but without stripping the product of personality.

Nothing Ear (3a) – More expression for the (a)-Series
The Nothing Ear (3a) follows the basic idea behind the Nothing (a)-Series with commendable clarity: technology should be approachable, but it need not look timid. These earbuds are therefore less polite and less faceless than many rivals in this price range. Transparent housings, a redesigned charging case and a deliberately lively colour palette position the Nothing Ear (3a) not merely as a functional audio product, but as something closer to a visible everyday accessory.
Black and White remain part of the line-up, while Yellow returns in a newly tuned shade. Pink is new, and it pushes the Ear (3a) well outside the usual monochrome comfort zone of True Wireless in-ear headphones. That matters, because Nothing Technologies Limited has never sold its products on technical specifications alone. Recognition is part of the proposition.
12 mm driver, LDAC and Hi-res Audio Wireless
Acoustically, the Nothing Ear (3a) is built around a 12 mm dynamic driver with an impedance of 32 Ohm. Its diaphragm combines PMI and TPU, with Nothing Technologies Limited promising greater bass authority and cleaner treble reproduction. According to the company, the larger driver can deliver up to 5 dB more bass than the previous generation.
Wireless transmission is handled via SBC, AAC and LDAC. That gives the Nothing Ear (3a) support for Hi-res Audio Wireless at up to 24 Bit and 96 kHz, provided the source device is able to supply it. LDAC is still far from routine in this price class, so its inclusion gives the Ear (3a) a genuine point of distinction rather than a decorative line on a spec sheet.
The Nothing X App also allows the sound to be shaped to taste. Alongside a Custom EQ, there is an Advanced EQ for more precise tuning. Sound profiles can be shared and downloaded, giving the Ear (3a) a mildly community-driven approach to personalisation, which sits neatly with Nothing Technologies Limited’s broader sense of product culture.
Static Spatial Audio for a wider presentation
The Nothing Ear (3a) supports static Spatial Audio. In practice, this means conventional stereo content can be presented with a wider, more spatially open character. Nothing Technologies Limited sees this as useful for films, live recordings and music that should feel less tightly locked between the ears.
This is not a dynamic head-tracking system, and it should not be mistaken for one. It is a static spatial processing mode, which is entirely understandable in this class. For users who want a broader and slightly more immersive presentation from compact earbuds without getting involved in complex calibration, it is a sensible addition.
Adaptive ANC with up to 45 dB
Noise reduction is one of the central technical points. Nothing Technologies Limited specifies adaptive ANC for the Ear (3a) at up to 45 dB. The effective frequency range is stated as 40 Hz to 5.000 Hz, with the company claiming particular improvement over the previous generation in the area where many common everyday noises sit.
That includes voices, traffic, ventilation systems and the general low-level commotion of public transport. For situations where the outside world should remain audible, a Transparency Mode is also provided. Each earbud uses three MEMS microphones, giving the Nothing Ear (3a) a total of six microphones. For calls, these are combined with an ENC algorithm intended to bring speech more clearly to the foreground.
Audio Snapshot and Call Recording
One of the more distinctive new functions of the Nothing Ear (3a) is Audio Snapshot. The earbuds include 32 MB of integrated flash memory, allowing short audio moments to be captured directly. By pressing both earbuds at the same time, a brief section before and after the trigger is saved — an audio snapshot in the literal sense.
The recorded clips are synchronised with the Nothing X App, where they can be played back, edited, shared and transcribed. Nothing Technologies Limited gives examples such as excerpts from online lectures or voice messages. Call Recording is also possible directly via the earbuds, with conversations and meetings recorded by gesture and then processed further in the app. Nothing Technologies Limited states that all participants are informed when recording is active.
Nothing X App as the control centre
The Nothing X App plays a central role with the Nothing Ear (3a). It manages not only EQ settings, audio profiles and firmware updates, but also Find My Earbuds, Dual Connection and the individual assignment of control gestures. Operation is handled through pressure gestures on the earbuds.
A single press controls playback and pause or accepts calls. Double and triple presses can be used to move between tracks. Pressing and holding handles noise control or volume adjustment. More specific gestures, such as double press and hold or pressing both earbuds at the same time, can trigger Audio Snapshot or Call Recording.
Bluetooth 6.0, Dual Connection and simple pairing
For connectivity, the Nothing Ear (3a) uses Bluetooth 6.0. Nothing Technologies Limited states a range of up to 15 m. Dual Connection is also included, allowing the earbuds to be connected to two devices in parallel. Compatibility is listed for Android from version 8.0 and Apple iOS from version 13.
Google Fast Pair and Microsoft Swift Pair are available for straightforward setup. The Nothing Ear (3a) also offers a low-latency mode intended to provide a more immediate response with video and gaming.
Battery life of up to 42 hours
Battery life is one of the stronger numbers in the Nothing Ear (3a) specification. With ANC switched off, the earbuds are rated for up to 10 hours of playback. Together with the charging case, total playback time rises to up to 42 hours. With ANC enabled, Nothing Technologies Limited states up to 6 hours from the earbuds and up to 25 hours including the charging case.
With LDAC in use, battery life naturally falls. In this mode, Nothing Technologies Limited quotes up to 6 hours without ANC and up to 4,5 hours with ANC. For calls, the figure is up to 6 hours without ANC or up to 4,5 hours with ANC. Including the charging case, call time is stated at up to 25 hours without ANC and up to 18 hours with ANC.
Charging is via USB-C. A full charge is said to take around 70 minutes. Fast charging provides up to one hour of playback from a five-minute charge of the earbuds, while ten minutes in the charging case is claimed to provide up to ten hours of playback from earbuds and case combined.
New charging case with 1×3 LED status display
The charging case of the Nothing Ear (3a) has been redesigned and, according to Nothing Technologies Limited, takes inspiration from retro tablet blister packs and sealed packaging. The shape is rounder and softer than before, but still clearly belongs to the Nothing design language.
A 1×3 LED status display provides information on battery level, charging, pairing and system status. Depending on the state of charge, one, two or three pixels light up; during charging, these fill gradually from bottom to top. Pairing mode and a successful factory reset are also indicated by dedicated light patterns.
Sustainability and packaging
Nothing Technologies Limited also points to sustainability aspects with the Ear (3a). The packaging is plastic-free, while final assembly is carried out using 100 per cent renewable energy, according to the company. The lifecycle carbon footprint is stated as 2,8 kg CO2e. The product also carries the Amazon Climate Pledge Friendly label.

Getting to the point
With the Nothing Ear (3a), Nothing Technologies Limited has assembled a remarkably complete package below € 100,-. LDAC, Hi-res Audio Wireless, adaptive ANC, Bluetooth 6.0, Dual Connection, comprehensive app-based EQ and long battery life are not things one should casually expect in this combination. More interesting still is the way Nothing Technologies Limited understands these earbuds not merely as a conventional music product, but as part of everyday listening, learning, working and content capture. Whether Audio Snapshot and Call Recording become natural habits in daily use remains to be seen. As a product proposition, however, the Nothing Ear (3a) feels sharply defined: visually confident, technically generous and aggressively positioned on price.
