Thorens New Reference Collection – Audiophile album as a cross-section of six decades

Thorens The New Reference is a turntable that cannot be measured by conventional standards and is not subject to any conventions. Thorens GmbH is now dedicating its latest record to this outstanding record player, which is therefore called the Thorens New Reference Collection.

Story Highlights
  • The new Thorens New Reference Collection, now presented by Thorens GmbH, brings together a broad spectrum of outstanding recordings.

It has been a good two years since Thorens GmbH presented a record, as the company from Schwäbisch Gmünd admits. So it is high time to present a new one, and that is exactly what they are now doing with a very special record, the Thorens New Reference Collection.

The Thorens New Reference Collection album pays homage to a very special turntable, the Thorens New Reference, the most elaborate in the 140-year history of Thorens GmbH.

The most elaborate turntable in the company’s long history

The Thorens brand has existed since 1883, the year in which it was founded in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland. Since then, the company has seen itself as a company dedicated to perfect record playback, as it expressly states, and with affordable conditions for as many music lovers as possible, with one exception, the Thorens New Reference.

“New Reference” has been dedicated to a project close to our hearts, for which we have deliberately excluded the affordable part: The Thorens New Reference. The most elaborate turntable in Thorens history is designed to provide a deeper, more accurate insight into new and old records with new technologies that are being used in the HiFi sector for the first time. You can buy this player, but it costs what it costs: Price was not a criterion in its development. We use the New Reference as a development tool from which our affordable players will also benefit. And it also has to cope with normal discs, pressed in 1960, 1980, 2000 or 2020, at some point in the 100-year history of the medium.

Gunter Kürten, CEO of Thorens GmbH about the Thorens New Reference

A cross-section from six decades

In keeping with this, the new Thorens New Reference Collection album now offers a cross-section of six decades of the finest recordings, as emphasised by Thorens GmbH.

The first recordings that can be found here were made in the 1960s and thus at the beginning of the stereo era, as they emphasise. The selection was personally directed by Gunter Kürten, who once again rummaged through his private vinyl collection, as he explains.

For the mastering and production of the albums, the company relied on its tried and tested co-operation with the German specialist in-akustik GmbH & Co. KG, which, according to Thorens GmbH, naturally guarantees outstanding quality.

The album is presented as a double album, comprising two vinyl discs produced in the DMM for 45 rpm and in 180 g audiophile pressing.
