Pro-Ject Debut PRO B – turntable with True Balanced Signal Transmission

A new pick-up, a particularly high-quality tone arm, a lavishly damped turntable and, not to be forgotten, a symmetrical connection option, so that this drive corresponds to the True Balanced philosophy of Pro-Ject Audio Systems, all this characterises the new Pro-Ject Debut PRO B.

Story Highlights
  • The Pro-Ject Debut PRO was presented by Pro-Ject Audio Systems to mark the company's 30th anniversary. Now, an update to True Balanced is coming with the Pro-Ject Debut PRO B.

The declared aim of Pro-Ject Audio Systems has always been to offer customers the best possible quality at the right price. This means focusing entirely on the essentials, leaving out everything that is not necessary to achieve the actual goal of the best possible music reproduction, but paying particular attention to those components that really matter.

The Pro-Ject Debut PRO 30th Anniversary Turntable was developed in line with this philosophy and launched by Pro-Ject Audio Systems to mark the company’s 30th anniversary in 2021. Now Pro-Ject Audio Systems is presenting an extremely exciting update of this turntable in the form of the new Pro-Ject Debut PRO B.

Pro-Ject Debut PRO B – The audiophile evolution

The Pro-Ject Debut PRO was a truly fine turntable, because, as just outlined, the developers focused on all the components that are actually relevant for the best sound and thus designed a record player that offers an impressive price-performance ratio.

For the upgrade of the Pro-Ject Debut PRO to the Pro-Ject Debut PRO B, only a few changes were necessary. In fact, it is only the details that distinguish the previous model from the new one, but they are decisive ones, so that Pro-Ject Audio Systems speaks of an audiophile evolution.

Focused on what really matters

The new Pro-Ject Debut PRO B turntable has a chassis made of MDF and weighs in at 6 kg with dimensions of 415 x 113 x 320 mm. The manufacturer claims that the chassis has been hand-painted in eight steps, giving it a particularly elegant finish.

The turntable rests on height-adjustable aluminium feet and has a motor suspension with improved damping.

The motor drives a sub-platter via a belt and, of course, the speed of the turntable is electronically controlled, so that it can be selected between 33 and 45 revolutions per minute using a toggle switch. A round belt included in the scope of delivery should also enable users to play shellac at 78 revolutions per minute.

A precise, DC-powered AC generator is used to drive the motor. This generates a completely new sine wave to ensure very clean performance and ultimately improved speed stability. In principle, a low-cost switching power supply is sufficient for the power supply, but an upgrade can of course be made at any time using the Pro-Ject Power Box S3 Phono, for example.

The platter measures 300 mm in diameter and is initially manufactured using the aluminium die-casting process and then finished using high-precision CNC milling. It has TPE damping and is operated with a felt mat, which is of course included in the scope of delivery.

The platter rotates in a high-precision stainless steel axle bearing with a bronze bushing, which is designed to provide the best results in terms of synchronisation and the lowest wow and flutter.

Pro-Ject Audio Systems uses an 8.6-inch one-piece carbon-aluminium tonearm, whereby the sandwich construction used here ensures high rigidity while simultaneously providing optimal damping for perfect scanning of the record.

Of course, this tonearm allows you to optimally adjust both the azimuth and the vertical tracking angle (VTA) as well as the tonearm height for different pick-up systems.

It should be noted that this turntable avoids the use of plastic wherever possible and that the aluminium parts are also plated with nickel. This is intended to guarantee a harder, more resistant surface.

Pro-Ject Pick it PRO Balanced MM Cartridge

Pro-Ject Audio Systems has joined forces with Ortofon A/S to develop the Pro-Ject Pick it PRO Balanced MM Cartridge, a symmetrically compatible MM pick-up system. It is the first of its kind and ensures that noise or other interference recorded via a balanced connection cannot have a negative impact on the performance, as it is eliminated at the source.

The new Pro-Ject Debut PRO B is now equipped not only with a pair of RCA sockets, but also with a mini XLR balanced phono output to allow balanced signal transmission. However, only an RCA cable in the form of the Pro-Ject Connect it Phono E RCA is included in the scope of delivery.

Prices and availability

The new Pro-Ject Debut PRO B should be available in matt black from specialist retailers in the near future, according to Pro-Ject Audio Systems. The recommended retail price is € 899,-.

Getting to the point

Pro-Ject Audio Systems says that the Pro-Ject Debut PRO was launched to celebrate the company’s 30th anniversary, and that it is now time to update this turntable to enable it to be connected via balanced signal transmission. With the new Pro-Ject Debut PRO B, the company is therefore presenting a turntable that not only comes with a matching pick-up system, but also features a true balanced mini-XLR output socket, allowing it to be used directly in a true balanced configuration.
