Piega Coax Gen2 Series – Piega Coax 811, Piega Coax 611, Piega Coax 411 and Piega Coax Center 211

Piega Coax 811, Piega Coax 611, Piega Coax 411 as well as Piega Coax Center 211, the loudspeaker specialist Piega SA is coming up with four new solutions for the High End 2022, which are to expand the latest generation of the Piega Coax Gen2 Series and thus one of the most important product lines of the Swiss company. The new Piega Coax 811, a powerful floor-standing loudspeaker system, will take over as the new flagship of the product series, closely followed by the Piega Coax 611, which is also designed as a floor-standing loudspeaker system, but presents itself somewhat slimmer. With the new Piega Coax 411, a shelf speaker system is available and with the Piega Coax Center 211, the product line – nomen est omen – is extended by a centre speaker, so that the entire series is now not only designed for stereo, but also for home cinema.

Classic virtues from Piega SA

There are several characteristics that distinguish all loudspeaker systems from Piega SA. First of all, there is the material that the company from Horgen near Zurich usually uses for its loudspeaker systems, namely aluminium. Of course, this material is also used for the new models, as it allows for the particularly slim design that has characterised the Piega Coax Series from the very beginning and thus naturally also forms the basis of the second generation in the form of the Piega Coax Gen2 Series.

In the case of the Piega Coax Series in particular, there is of course another feature that is characteristic of Piega SA as a whole, but which originated precisely with this product line, namely a very special high and mid-range driver unit.

When Piega SA was founded in 1986 by Kurt Scheuch and Leo Greiner, the focus was on one driver concept in particular, the so-called ribbon driver, which was initially used solely as a tweeter.

Over the years, Piega SA refined this technology so that it was also possible to manufacture the midrange driver in this way, and what’s more, the tweeter was moved to the centre and defacto surrounded by the midrange driver, thus essentially relying on a so-called coaxial driver arrangement. This was essentially the foundation of the Piega Coax Series.

This exclusive driver technology of a midrange-tweeter ribbon driver consisting of a centrally arranged tweeter and a surrounding midrange driver is of course also found in the current Piega Coax Gen2 Series, but in a very modern, further improved form.

Piega C112+ and Piega C212+ – mid-treble ribbon driver in an improved new version

An enhanced version of this unique coaxial midrange-tweeter is now at the heart of the new Piega Coax 811, Piega Coax 611, Piega Coax 411 and Piega Coax Center 211 models.

Its newly developed solid front panel features additional cross bracing as well as a centre bar, which allows the installation of an additional neodymium magnet above the tweeter to further improve its efficiency. In addition, a newly developed, specially coated foil is used to achieve a more linear frequency response in the lower frequency range and thus a deeper connection to the woofer.

According to the manufacturer, the coaxial ribbon now takes over the reproduction from 450 Hz and within its wider frequency band it also covers the sensitive range of vocals, which can now be reproduced absolutely flawlessly and harmoniously, according to Piega SA.

The inner workings of the coaxial driver have also been meticulously hand-optimised down to the last detail. For example, the magnetic rods are now mechanically decoupled to prevent even the smallest changes in the magnetic field caused by micro-resonances. According to Piega SA, nothing has been left untouched, from the layout of the foil and the magnet construction to the damping of the mechanical construction, and each element is precisely matched to the others.

All these measures have resulted in more dynamics, finer details and even more impressive three-dimensionality, so that the company is convinced that it has set new standards with the Piega Coax Gen2 Series.

More room to breathe

In order to meet this high quality standard at lower frequencies, the UHQD woofers in the new models have been given more room to breathe, as the manufacturer himself puts it.

Ultimately, this means that the enclosures, made from a seamless extruded aluminium profile, have been designed a little more generously, so that the volume of the speakers is larger than in their predecessors.

This is particularly noticeable in the new flagship of the series, the Piega Coax 811, which has the most opulent profile ever used in loudspeaker construction, with a circumference of no less than 119 cm. To ensure that the construction is as robust as ever, a wall thickness of 12 mm was chosen.

Building up tension

An extremely interesting design feature is the Tension Improve Module developed by Piega SA, which the manufacturer also calls TIM for short, and which puts the loudspeaker cabinets under controlled tension by applying targeted pressure to the inner walls.

The aim of this measure is to effectively counteract unwanted cabinet vibrations.

In order to significantly increase the rigidity of the cabinet, the new TIM2 module, used for the first time in the Piega Coax Gen2 Series, is placed under tension and positively connected to the cabinet. In this way, even minimal cabinet vibrations can be reduced extremely effectively and remaining resonances completely eliminated by the proven viscoelastic damping foils.

Elegant in appearance

Even though the volume of the new models of the Piega Coax Gen2 Series has been increased, these solutions still represent particularly slim loudspeaker systems, especially in comparison to conventional designs in this class.

Roger Kessler, Piega Team Head of Research & Development, is responsible for the realisation of the new loudspeaker systems, working together with Swiss designer Stefan Hürlemann, who took on the task of realising solutions that can be harmoniously integrated into any living environment.

Piega Coax 811 – The New Flagship

As already mentioned, the Piega Coax 811 is a floorstanding loudspeaker system that can definitely be described as powerful for Piega SA and takes on the role of the new flagship of the Piega Coax Gen2 Series.

One metre and 24 cm high, 42 cm deep and 29 cm wide, this system weighs in at an impressive 63 kg.

It’s a three-way system, combining two 220 mm UHWD woofers with two 220 mm UHQD passive radiators and the Piega C212+ coaxial ribbon driver as a combination of midrange and tweeter. This is supposed to be able to reproduce a frequency range between 22 Hz and 50 kHz, with an impedance of 4 ohms, a sensitivity of 92 dB and the manufacturer specifying the recommended amplifier power with a range between 20 and 250 watts.

Piega Coax 611 – The slim floor-standing speaker system

But the new Piega Coax 611 is much slimmer, although it is also a three-way floor-standing speaker system. With dimensions of 117 x 21 x 31 cm, it also weighs “only” 45 kg.

Essentially, the design is the same as that of the flagship of the product line, but here two 160 mm UHQD drivers or 160 mm UHQD passive radiators are used in combination with the Piega C112+ coaxial ribbon driver.

The frequency range is from 32 Hz to 50 kHz, the sensitivity is 90 dB, the impedance is 4 ohms, and the recommended amplifier power for this speaker system is 20 to 250 watts.

Piega Coax 411 – Three-way bookshelf loudspeaker system

The Piega Coax 411 presents itself as a new bookshelf loudspeaker system. As a three-way system, it features a 160 mm UHQD driver and the Piega C112+ coaxial ribbon driver and thus has a frequency range between 35 Hz and 50 kHz at an impedance of 4 ohms and a sensitivity of 90 dB. Designed for amplifiers with an output of between 20 and 200 watts, this solution should prove to be particularly flexible, which is also ensured by the comparatively compact dimensions of only 45 x 21 x 31 cm. However, the speaker system still weighs 25 kg.

Piega Coax Center 211 – Designed for Home Cinema

As the name suggests, the new Piega Coax Center 211 is a centre speaker in the Piega Coax Gen2 Series. Of course, the same features are used in the other systems of the range to guarantee a harmonious sound image even in a multi-channel configuration.

The Piega Coax Center 211 uses two 160 mm UHQD drivers in combination with a centrally positioned Piega C112+ coaxial ribbon driver. The frequency response is 35 Hz to 50 kHz, the impedance is 4 ohms and the sensitivity is 90 dB. This speaker system is also designed for amplifiers with an output of between 20 and 250 watts.

The Piega Coax Center 211 measures 21 x 62 x 31 cm and weighs 21 kg.
