Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver – For audiophile music lovers

The Premium Audio Company is aiming to fulfil high expectations with the latest Onkyo brand product, with the presentation of the new Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver being described as a solution with exceptional audio fidelity for audiophiles.

So-called stereo receivers have been a tradition at the Japanese brand Onkyo for years, and Premium Audio Company LLC. now wants to continue this tradition by presenting the new Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver. This solution obviously has particularly high ambitions, as this product is described as a solution that offers the highest audio fidelity and is therefore designed for audiophile music lovers.

To guarantee this, a state-of-the-art, powerful stereo network reciever has been developed directly at the Premium Audio Tech Centre in Osaka, Japan, as the company emphasises.

From music streaming to radio and vinyl records

A so-called stereo receiver offers the immense advantage of being able to directly access a wide variety of sources with just a single device. If, as in this case, it is also a so-called stereo network receiver, streaming is of course the main focus.

Flexible streaming client

The new Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver can be integrated into the network either via WiFi or an RJ45 Ethernet interface and acts as an extremely flexible streaming client.

Firstly, as a dlna-certified streaming client, it can access content via UPnP, but it is also equipped for Apple AirPlay 2 and Google Chromecast and can access content such as TuneIn, Amazon Music, Deezer, Spotify and TIDAL.

The new Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver is also Roon-ready, as the manufacturer emphasises.

If you want to use smartphones and tablets directly as a source without a network infrastructure, you can do so via Bluetooth.

It should also be mentioned that the new Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver is labelled as “Works with Sonos”, a partner programme initiated by Sonos Inc. a long time ago.

HDMI included

One coaxial and two optical S/PDIF interfaces are available for digital sources. The Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver also has two USB ports, which can be used as a source for corresponding storage media.

It should be emphasised that the new Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver has four HDMI inputs and one HDMI output. Content is passed through in 8K and, of course, the HDMI out supports ARC, thus acting as an audio return channel and allowing centralised control of multiple devices with just one remote control, such as that of the TV set, using HDMI CEC.

The Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver can process audio data in Linear PCM with up to 32 bits and 768 kHz, relying on an unspecified converter from the specialist Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation.

Integrated phono preamp and FM as well as DAB

As already mentioned, the new Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver also has an integrated phono preamp in addition to the digital interfaces mentioned and three analogue inputs in the form of pairs of RCA sockets, whereby the special feature here is that the latest RIAA filter design from the Japanese consumer electronics specialist is used and this is designed for both MM and MC pick-up systems.

The integrated tuner is equally equipped for FM and therefore analogue radio, as well as DAB and therefore digital radio reception.

It should also be mentioned that the Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver has both a pre-out for a second zone and a pre-out for integrating a subwoofer.

Incidentally, the front also has a connection for headphones.

Powerful amplifier in Class G

It is astonishing that this is a Class G amplifier, and that it can offer quite remarkable performance. The manufacturer states that the new Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver can deliver two times 120 watts to speaker systems with an impedance of 8 ohms, and even two times 140 watts into 4 ohms.

With dimensions of 435 x 39 x 150 mm, the new Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver weighs in at 9 kg.

Prices and availability

According to the manufacturer, the new Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver will be available immediately in black at a recommended retail price of € 799,-.

Getting to the point

With the new Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver, the Premium Audio Company LLC. is raising quite high expectations, as it is intended to provide an extremely flexible solution in the just-add-speaker class that will delight even audiophile music lovers. In fact, the new Onkyo TX-8470 Stereo Network Receiver proves to be well-equipped, because in addition to inputs for analogue and digital sources, including an integrated phono preamp, it offers HDMI interfaces, USB ports and, above all, extensive streaming functions, including an integrated radio. The fact that it is also a powerful amplifier in Class G rounds off the positive overall impression.
