- Based on the design philosophy of the legendary Musical Fidelity M1 turntable, the latest record player from Musical Fidelity is the Musical Fidelity M6xTT turntable.
Admittedly, it’s been a few days since Musical Fidelity presented the Musical Fidelity M1 turntable, a very unusual record player. It was developed by Antony Michaelson, founder of Musical Fidelity, together with his friend Heinz Lichtenegger, who, as founder of Pro-Ject Audio Systems, is of course a proven specialist for record players and, as Managing Director of Audio Tuning Vertriebs GmbH, has also been a long-standing sales partner of the Musical Fidelity brand.
Now the design philosophy of the legendary Musical Fidelity M1 turntable is to be revived in a new record player, whereby Heinz Lichtenegger is now the brand owner of Musical Fidelity and is therefore directly responsible for the design of this turntable, the new Musical Fidelity M6xTT turntable.
Not the first turntable – The Musical Fidelity M8xTT turntable
First of all, it should be mentioned that the new Musical Fidelity M6xTT turntable is not the first turntable that the English HiFi manufacturer has designed as a reminiscence of the Musical Fidelity M1 turntable. Last year, the company presented the Musical Fidelity M8xTT Turntable and spoke of a record player in the High-end HiFi segment, which was clearly designed as a successor to the Musical Fidelity M1 Turntable, whereby, as the name suggests, a solution matching the Musical Fidelity M8 Series was realised.
Matching the Musical Fidelity M6 Series
With the latest model, a record player has now been realised that fits in with the Musical Fidelity M6 Series in terms of electronics, and is therefore aimed specifically at those who own such a HiFi chain, but not only.
Accordingly, when developing the new Musical Fidelity M6xTT turntable, it was also important that it perfectly matches the timelessly elegant, simple design line realised for the electronics.
Metal and acrylic elegantly combined
The new Musical Fidelity M6xTT turntable is also based on a construction that uses mass in the form of metal in combination with resonance-free acrylic, whereby in principle the construction is based on a drive in the form of a sub-chassis. The drive measures 480 x 210 x 370 mm and thus weighs a considerable 19,1 kg.
The base is a transparent acrylic plate, which sits on height-adjustable, TPE-damped aluminium feet. The motor is also mounted here so that it has no point of contact with the second part of the chassis, which is located above it and is also made of transparent acrylic.
The bearing for the turntable is installed here and the tonearm base is also integrated into the upper part of the double chassis, as the manufacturer itself describes it.
The two parts of the chassis are separated by Teflon-coated spacers, as Musical Fidelity reports.
Electronic speed control
In order to achieve the best results, Musical Fidelity initially relies on a special mounting of the motor on the new Musical Fidelity M6xTT turntable. It sits on a special foam in the lower acrylic base, and of course it has a sophisticated electronic speed control.
A precise alternating current generator is used, which ensures maximum precision and stability by generating the frequency and voltage for the motor from scratch by the control electronics. Of course, in this case the speed can be conveniently selected between 33 1/3 and 45 revolutions using a button.
The connection to the 39 mm platter is made via a precision belt, whereby the platter is made of aluminium and damped using TPE. According to the manufacturer, it weighs an impressive 6.6 kg.
9 inch tonearm
The tonearm used in the new Musical Fidelity M6xTT turntable is essentially based on the same design as that of the Musical Fidelity M8xTT turntable, but has a shorter 9-inch tonearm tube, a slimmer headshell design and a 5-pin DIN connection.
The tonearm, with its extremely low-resonance design, an acrylic bearing ring and a conical aluminium tonearm tube, is said to be the best basis for a wide variety of cartridge systems, especially as the VTA and azimuth can of course be adjusted accordingly and two counterweights, made of metal and TPE-damped, are included in the scope of delivery.
Prices and availability
The new Musical Fidelity M6xTT turntable should already be available from specialist retailers these days at a recommended retail price of € 4.999,-. The scope of delivery includes a leather mat as a support for the turntable and a record puck.
Getting to the point
Even though it is the ‘little brother’ of the Musical Fidelity M8xTT turntable, the latest record player from Musical Fidelity, the Musical Fidelity M6xTT turntable, is a true High-end record player, a solution that takes up the design principle of the legendary Musical Fidelity M1 turntable and transfers it to a turntable suitable for the Musical Fidelity M6 Series.
