A Different Route Between Solid-state and Valve Design
The EAT E-GLO CB arrives alongside the EAT E-GLO SB, but the two phono stages are not merely different trim levels of the same basic circuit. The CB follows its own hybrid philosophy, combining a balanced discrete input section with a subsequent single-ended valve and transistor stage.
That choice is particularly relevant at the input. A phono cartridge generates an extremely small signal, leaving it especially vulnerable to hum and interference before meaningful gain has been applied. Differential processing allows noise appearing equally on both signal conductors to be rejected, helping to preserve the useful information delivered by the cartridge.
The first stage comprises three discrete semiconductor amplifier circuits. Two process the positive and negative phases independently, while the third combines them for the next section. EAT avoids integrated operational amplifiers throughout the audio signal path.
Two ECC83S Valves in the Second Gain Stage

Moving-coil cartridges can be terminated at 10, 18, 43, 75, 150, 300 or 600 Ohm, with 1.2 kOhm completing the range. That is sufficiently broad to accommodate cartridges that prefer a relatively heavy electrical load as well as designs that sound more open when presented with a higher impedance.
The MM settings are just as noteworthy. Rather than stopping at the conventional 47 kOhm value, the E-GLO CB offers 30, 36, 42, 47, 53, 59, 65 and 75 kOhm. Capacitance can be set to 50, 150, 270, 370, 520 or 620 pF, allowing the user to account for both the cartridge specification and the capacitance introduced by the tonearm cable.
The balanced XLR input does require a degree of care. Moving-coil cartridges are naturally well suited to balanced connection because their generators are electrically floating. Some MM cartridges, however, connect one side of the generator to ground internally. These should be used through the RCA input unless their manufacturer explicitly approves balanced operation.
RCA and XLR Outputs Can Operate Together
The RCA and balanced XLR outputs remain active simultaneously. The phono signal can therefore be routed to two destinations – for example, a main integrated amplifier and a secondary system, headphone amplifier or recording device – without adding an external distribution stage.
Output impedance is specified at 100 Ohm via RCA and 2 × 100 Ohm through XLR. EAT quotes RIAA accuracy within 0.5 dB between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. A switchable subsonic filter operates at 20 Hz with a slope of 18 dB per octave, providing a useful means of suppressing record warps and very-low-frequency energy before it reaches the amplifier and loudspeakers.
External Power Supply and Optional EAT LPS 2
A separate switch-mode power supply is supplied as standard. Moving the mains conversion circuitry away from the sensitive audio electronics reduces the risk of electromagnetic interference entering the gain stages.
