écoute TH2 Headphone – Ecoute Audio Inc. brings ambitious Hifi into a headphone with valve preamplifier, dual-mono amplification and Hi-res Audio

Ecoute Audio Inc. has equipped the écoute TH2 Headphone with a genuine Nutube 6P1 dual-triode preamplifier, discrete high-bias Class A/B dual-mono amplification and a dual-core DAC that accepts up to 32 Bit 384 kHz over USB-C. Bluetooth 5.3 with LDAC, hybrid active noise cancelling, a transparency mode and an eight-band parametric equaliser make sure the closed-back design is just as comfortable away from the hi-fi rack. Our report looks at how this second-generation model reworks the acoustics, the shielding and the noise cancelling of the écoute TH1.

Story Highlights
  • The écoute TH2 Headphone from Ecoute Audio Inc. is a closed-back, wireless-capable headphone that builds a complete hi-fi signal chain into solid aluminium, combining a real Nutube 6P1 valve preamplifier and dual-mono Class A/B amplification with a 32 Bit 384 kHz DAC, LDAC, hybrid ANC and a firmware-based eight-band equaliser. It is offered in Gunmetal, Nickel and Charcoal at a recommended price of € 999,-, and deliveries through audioNEXT GmbH are expected to begin in early November 2026.

What if the sound philosophy of a serious hi-fi system could be folded into a pair of headphones without leaving out the links in the chain that matter? That is the question behind the écoute TH2 Headphone from the American company Ecoute Audio Inc., the second generation of its unconventional portable valve hi-fi system and the successor to the écoute TH1 Headphone. Rather than cramming conversion, signal processing and amplification into one compact chip, the manufacturer gives each stage its own circuitry, including a valve preamplifier and two separate amplifier channels. Yet the écoute TH2 Headphone is not meant to be a niche tool for committed enthusiasts alone: wireless connectivity, active noise cancelling and straightforward operation are there to make it a practical companion for everyday life.

Thinking in components, not chips

The usual recipe for a modern Bluetooth headphone prizes small size, low power consumption and as many functions as possible on as little silicon as possible. Often a single highly integrated circuit handles most of the digital processing and the amplification. Ecoute Audio Inc. has taken a different road with the écoute TH2 Headphone, one that follows the layout of a traditional hi-fi system far more closely.

Inside sits a full signal chain: a dedicated D/A converter, an analogue preamplifier and power amplifiers downstream of it. The company hopes this will deliver precise signal handling, strong channel separation and playback whose dynamics, spatial presentation and tonal character come close to the qualities of high-grade stationary equipment.

The écoute TH2 Headphone builds on the concept first seen in the écoute TH1, but it has been reworked in key areas. These are the acoustic construction, the shielding of the valve circuit and the active noise cancelling.

Stage by stage: a real valve in the analogue path

The most unusual component of the écoute TH2 Headphone is undoubtedly its integrated valve preamplifier. Ecoute Audio Inc. uses a Nutube 6P1 dual triode, a modern and exceptionally compact valve technology whose modest power demands also suit portable audio products.

This is not a digital imitation of valve sound. The circuit really does sit in the analogue signal path, taking over preamplification once the integrated dual-core DAC has converted the signal from digital to analogue. Ecoute Audio Inc. is aiming for the harmonic qualities and the fine dynamic expression that devotees of good valve electronics prize, and the preamp is therefore an essential element of the electronic architecture rather than a marketing badge.

For the second generation, the shielding of this circuit in particular has been improved. The aim is to lower the noise floor and to reduce susceptibility to high-frequency interference and to microphony caused by mechanical vibration.

Two channels, kept apart

After the preamp, the signal reaches an output stage that treats left and right as entirely separate matters. The écoute TH2 Headphone employs discrete high-bias Class A/B amplification in a dual-mono configuration, with both channels routed individually from the D/A converter all the way to their respective drivers.

This layout is intended to keep crosstalk between channels to a minimum and so support precise stereo imaging. The manufacturer expects benefits in localisation, depth and transparency, particularly with demanding recordings that have a complex spatial layout.

The pairing of valve preamplifier and dual-mono output stage is the real unique selling point of the concept. Many premium headphones define themselves mainly through digital signal processors and carefully tuned drivers; Ecoute Audio Inc. instead relies on an unusually elaborate analogue amplifier architecture.

Drivers and acoustic tuning

Sound is generated by 40 mm dynamic drivers with diaphragms of titanium-coated Mylar. The stated frequency range runs from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

Compared with its predecessor, Ecoute Audio Inc. has above all revised the acoustic resonance chamber. The new construction is tuned for stronger, deeper bass and for extended treble, and the improved acoustic design is also meant to make the presentation more balanced and precise overall.

The closed-back construction suits both stationary listening and use on the move. The sealed ear cups provide a degree of passive isolation from outside noise simply by virtue of their design, and the integrated active noise cancelling can add to this when required.

Connections: wireless, digital and analogue

Despite its unusual analogue architecture, the écoute TH2 Headphone is a thoroughly modern premium headphone when it comes to connectivity. Wireless playback is handled by Bluetooth 5.3, with SBC, AAC and LDAC codecs supported.

LDAC is of particular interest for high-quality music files, since compatible Android devices can transmit up to 24 Bit 96 kHz. For Apple users, AAC is available, so the headphone can be used with an Apple iPhone or Apple iPad as well.

Listeners who prefer a wired digital link can use the integrated USB-C port. The built-in D/A converter is designed for high-resolution signals of up to 32 Bit 384 kHz, so even demanding Hi-res Audio files can be processed.

An analogue input in the form of a 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack is also provided. Notably, the headphone can be run either actively, using its own electronics, or passively, which keeps it usable with conventional hi-fi components that have a headphone output.

Everyday comfort: hybrid ANC and transparency

Elaborate analogue circuitry alone does not make a headphone suitable for daily travel. Ecoute Audio Inc. has therefore added a range of contemporary convenience features intended to be useful in day-to-day use.

The hybrid active noise cancelling combines feedforward and feedback microphones to pick up unwanted ambient sound and reduce it electronically. Compared with the écoute TH1 this function has been revised, and the manufacturer says it has particularly tried to improve its effectiveness.

A transparency mode lets ambient sound through deliberately, so announcements or conversations can be heard without taking the headphone off. This mode has also been reworked and should now convey a more natural impression.

A built-in microphone for calls is fitted too, along with support for the Apple Siri and Google Assistant voice assistants. The key functions for volume, track selection and call control are available through physical controls on the ear cups.

Shaping the sound: the écoute Tuning App

Not every music lover wants the same tonal balance, and different genres or recording qualities can call for individual adjustment. Ecoute Audio Inc. therefore provides the free écoute Tuning App for Apple iOS and Google Android.

The app offers an eight-band parametric equaliser with which the frequency response can be adapted to personal listening habits. The bass range, the presence of voices or the treble can each be adjusted individually.

How these settings are applied is particularly interesting. The sound profiles created are stored directly in the headphone’s firmware and so remain available regardless of the source in use. A tuning, once chosen, therefore stays in place whether the music arrives via Bluetooth, USB-C or the analogue input.

The app is also used for firmware updates, so future improvements and adjustments can be installed through it.

Build quality, fit and finishes

The mechanical construction is meant to underline the same high standard. The housing of the écoute TH2 Headphone is made of solid aluminium, which should provide a very stable foundation for the sensitive electronics inside.

The headband rests on a hybrid, sprung suspension with three pivot points. This is intended to distribute contact pressure evenly and avoid uncomfortable pressure spots, and infinitely variable size adjustment lets the headphone be fitted precisely to different head shapes.

The ear pads are made of memory foam, whose adaptability should ensure a comfortable fit during longer listening sessions. The modular design also allows ear pads and headband covers to be replaced, and premium ear pads in lambskin are offered as an option.

The écoute TH2 Headphone comes in three colours, Gunmetal, Nickel and Charcoal, and for each of them a fabric or a leather covering can be chosen.

At 424 g, the écoute TH2 Headphone is certainly not among the lightest over-ear headphones, but given the amplifier technology inside and the solid aluminium construction that is entirely understandable.

Battery life

The electronics are powered by a rechargeable battery. According to the manufacturer, the headphone achieves up to 20 hours of playback at maximum volume, and up to 30 hours in standby.

Charging takes place via USB-C and takes around 3,5 hours. That leaves ample reserves for long listening sessions, the daily commute or extended journeys.

All benefits at a glance

  • Real valve sound character: a Nutube 6P1 dual triode handles analogue preamplification in the signal path itself, rather than imitating it digitally.
  • Independent channels: two separate high-bias Class A/B amplifiers keep left and right largely apart from converter to driver.
  • Hi-res from the cable: the dual-core DAC takes digital signals of up to 32 Bit 384 kHz via USB-C.
  • Several ways to connect: Bluetooth 5.3 with LDAC, AAC and SBC, USB-C audio and a 3,5 mm analogue input, usable actively or passively, cover most listening situations.
  • Reworked acoustics: newly developed resonance chambers and 40 mm drivers with titanium-coated Mylar diaphragms aim for a precise, balanced presentation.
  • Calm when you need it, aware when you want it: hybrid ANC shuts out disturbances, while the transparency mode lets the surroundings back in.
  • A sound that stays put: equaliser settings from the écoute Tuning App are saved in the headphone’s firmware and apply to every source.
  • Built to last and to personalise: solid aluminium, replaceable ear pads and headband covers, three colours and a choice of fabric or leather.

Getting to the point

A headphone with an integrated valve preamplifier and a thoroughly built dual-mono output stage is, without doubt, an unusual proposition. With the écoute TH2 Headphone, Ecoute Audio Inc. shows convincingly that progress in high-quality mobile audio does not have to mean ever more powerful digital processors and cleverer algorithms. The company puts classic analogue signal handling at the centre and pairs it with the possibilities of modern wireless technology.

What strikes us as particularly interesting is that this elaborate architecture is not supposed to come at the expense of everyday usability. Bluetooth with LDAC, USB-C audio, hybrid ANC and a versatile tuning app make the écoute TH2 Headphone a genuinely appealing alternative in the upper premium class. With the second generation, Ecoute Audio Inc. has also revised precisely those areas that matter equally to sound quality and practical comfort. It is a distinctive approach that should particularly appeal to lovers of classic high-end Hifi concepts.
