Sonos Beam Ultra – New Compact Soundbar with 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos, Upfiring Drivers and AI Speech Enhancement

Sonos Inc. has substantially reworked its compact soundbar concept for the new Sonos Beam Ultra. Nine individually driven transducers, including two upfiring tweeters, enable a 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos configuration, while AI Speech Enhancement offers four levels of dialogue enhancement. WiFi 6, Bluetooth, HDMI eARC, Apple AirPlay 2 and Trueplay for Apple iOS and Google Android complete a soundbar designed to grow with the wider Sonos home cinema system.

Story Highlights
  • The Sonos Beam Ultra brings dedicated height drivers and 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos reproduction to a soundbar measuring just 750 mm wide. Its new acoustic architecture is joined by four-stage AI Speech Enhancement, Trueplay room optimisation for Apple iOS and Google Android, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth. Compatible Sonos subwoofers, surround speakers and headphones allow the system to extend well beyond the soundbar itself.

The Sonos Beam has long occupied a strategically important position in the portfolio of Sonos Inc. It offers a more compact alternative to the company’s largest soundbars while retaining the network functions and modular expansion options that define the Sonos ecosystem. The new Sonos Beam Ultra preserves that basic proposition, but the technology inside has changed considerably.

For the first time in a Beam-sized model, two dedicated upfiring transducers provide physical support for the height information within a 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos presentation. Sonos has also redesigned the centre section, strengthened low-frequency reproduction and introduced AI Speech Enhancement with four selectable intensity levels. All of this has been accommodated within a cabinet that remains only 750 mm wide.

A Smaller Soundbar Takes On a Larger Role

Sonos positions the Beam Ultra between the compact Sonos Ray and the considerably larger Sonos Arc Ultra. According to the manufacturer’s comparison, it is intended primarily for medium-sized living spaces and televisions with screen sizes of up to 65 inches. That positioning matters: the Beam Ultra is not merely an entry-level alternative, but a deliberately compact foundation for a more ambitious home cinema system.

Its dimensions underline the point. At 750 mm wide, 63 mm high and 105 mm deep, the soundbar should fit beneath many televisions without dominating the furniture around them. Its low profile also reduces the likelihood of obstructing the screen, while an optional Sonos wall mount provides an alternative for installations where the television is mounted rather than placed on a cabinet.

The exterior remains recognisably related to the previous Beam, yet the acoustic layout inside is far more elaborate. Nine individually tuned Class D amplifier channels drive five tweeters and four low-profile woofers. The latter are intended to provide a stronger low-frequency foundation without requiring the cabinet to grow substantially.

Height Information Is Now Part of the Hardware

The decisive change is the way the Sonos Beam Ultra approaches spatial reproduction. Sonos specifies a 7.1.2 configuration with Dolby Atmos, supported by two dedicated upfiring tweeters rather than relying entirely on virtual processing to suggest sound above the listener.

These transducers use directional horn structures to project sound towards the ceiling, from where it is reflected towards the listening position. Two further tweeters radiate towards the sides and are also coupled to horn guides, helping the soundbar create a broader image beyond the physical width of its enclosure. A forward-facing tweeter at the centre is responsible for the main vocal and dialogue information.

Not every installation leaves the upper surface of a soundbar completely unobstructed. If the Beam Ultra is positioned beneath furniture or in another location that interferes with its upward radiation, the Sonos App provides a Simulated Overhead Sound setting. This allows the soundbar to adapt its spatial processing to the chosen installation.

Supported formats include Dolby Atmos, Dolby Atmos via Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD, as well as Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Stereo PCM, Multichannel PCM and DTS Digital Surround. HDMI eARC is required when lossless multichannel formats are to be transmitted from a compatible television.

Dialogue Control for Different Rooms and Different Hours

Spatial effects may attract the initial attention, but dialogue intelligibility remains one of the most important practical concerns with any television sound system. Sonos has therefore made the newly developed centre section a central element of the Beam Ultra rather than treating speech enhancement as a secondary software feature.

AI Speech Enhancement is designed to identify human voices within the audio signal and bring them forward when dialogue risks being masked by effects, music or ambient noise. The user can select between four levels in the Sonos App, allowing the degree of intervention to be adapted to the programme and the listening environment.

Night Sound addresses a related but different problem. It reduces particularly loud passages while lifting quieter details, making films and television programmes easier to follow at lower volume without abrupt peaks disturbing other people in the home.

Room optimisation is handled by Sonos Trueplay. The system analyses the acoustic behaviour of the room and adjusts the soundbar accordingly. Sonos explicitly lists support for both Apple iOS and Google Android with the Beam Ultra, further removing the restriction that had previously limited access to room optimisation for many Android users.

An Opening Move Rather Than a Finished System

The Sonos Beam Ultra can operate as a self-contained television sound solution, but its role within the Sonos ecosystem is equally important. Owners who want greater low-frequency extension can add a compatible Sonos subwoofer, while rear speakers can be introduced to create a more fully developed surround setup.

The choice of rear channels is becoming more flexible as well. Compatible portable Sonos speakers can be assigned temporarily as rear surrounds, with Sonos naming models including the Sonos Play and Sonos Move 2. Once the film is over, they can be removed from the surround configuration and returned to their normal role as portable wireless speakers.

This modular approach allows the system to develop in stages. A household can begin with the compact soundbar, add a subwoofer when greater bass extension becomes desirable and introduce rear channels without replacing the original component. The Beam Ultra therefore serves both as a complete compact solution and as the central element of a larger Sonos home cinema installation.

Television Connection Without Closing the Door on Music

HDMI eARC provides the primary connection between the Sonos Beam Ultra and a television. HDMI CEC also allows everyday volume control through the existing TV remote, reducing the need to introduce another handset into the living room.

The soundbar can additionally be controlled through the Sonos App, Sonos Voice Control or the touch-sensitive surface controls. These provide direct access to volume, playback, pause and track navigation.

WiFi 6 handles music streaming and communication with other components on the Sonos network. Bluetooth is now available for direct playback from a mobile device in this Beam class, with a dedicated control on the soundbar used for pairing. Apple AirPlay 2 provides another route for sending music from compatible Apple devices.

Dolby Atmos Music is supported alongside the film and television formats, reinforcing the Beam Ultra’s position as more than a replacement for a television’s built-in speakers. It remains part of a networked audio platform even when no screen-based content is being played.

Private Listening Stays Within the Sonos System

Sonos TV Audio Swap extends the Beam Ultra’s system integration to compatible headphones. Television sound can be transferred from the soundbar to the headphones when private listening is required, including the reproduction of Dolby Atmos content.

This can be useful when one person wants to continue watching at an individual listening level without disturbing anyone else in the room. The Sonos Ace Ultra, introduced alongside the Beam Ultra, supports this function and strengthens the connection between the company’s home cinema and personal audio products.

Getting to the Point

The Sonos Beam Ultra moves the company’s compact soundbar considerably closer to the capabilities normally associated with larger home cinema solutions. The two dedicated upfiring drivers and the resulting 7.1.2 configuration represent a far more meaningful development than a routine generational update.

AI Speech Enhancement, Android-compatible Trueplay, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth broaden its everyday usefulness without undermining the simplicity expected from a Sonos product. For users who find the Sonos Arc Ultra physically too large but still want a system that can expand through subwoofers, rear speakers and headphones, the Beam Ultra could become the most compelling entry point into the Sonos home cinema ecosystem.
