T+A Pulsar R 21 – New bookshelf speaker in the T+A Pulsar series

It is the further development of the successful T+A Pulsar R 20 bookshelf loudspeaker system which now extends the T+A Pulsar series in the form of the new T+A Pulsar R 21. According to the Herford-based company, many of the features of the T+A Pulsar ST 21 floor-standing loudspeaker system have been adopted.

The company T+A elektroakustik GmbH & Co. KG can boast a range of loudspeaker systems, including the so-called T+A Pulsar series, which are designed to feature solutions with clear, purist cabinet shapes, so that, according to the Herford-based company, they can be perfectly integrated into any living space. These are products which boast exquisite workmanship down to the smallest detail, but which also combine modern design with outstanding acoustic properties, so that they meet the requirement of expressing high-end hi-fi as a special form of luxury.

Up to now the T+A Pulsar ST 21 floorstanding loudspeaker system alone has been included in the current generation of the T+A Pulsar series, but now a further system is to be added, namely a bookshelf speaker system. The new T+A Pulsar R 21 is thus the successor to the successful T+A Pulsar R 20 shelf loudspeaker system, although it is of course a further development of this solution. However, in developing the new T+A Pulsar R 21 many of the features of the T+A Pulsar ST 21 floor-standing loudspeaker system have been adopted, and thus translated into the compact elegance of a bookshelf loudspeaker, as the manufacturer describes it.

The new T+A Pulsar R 21 bookshelf loudspeaker system is intended to convey the direct relationship with its big sister, the T+A Pulsar ST 21, at first glance. The design has already adopted many of its visual features, such as the clear, straightforward design with striking bevels. To put it bluntly, one could say that the T+A Pulsar R 21 presents itself as if a part of the T+A Pulsar ST 21 had been taken out of the T+A Pulsar ST 21, and these two solutions are so similar.

The new T+A Pulsar R 21 has been designed as a two-way bass reflex system, but with a very compact speaker. The T+A Pulsar R 21 measures 30 x 19 x 30 cm, and is available in either black or white lacquer, and weighs in at 7 kg.

From a purely technical point of view the new T+A Pulsar R 21 is, as already mentioned, a logical further development of its predecessor, and the developers’ attention to detail for optimum sound starts with one of the features just mentioned, namely the design of the cabinet shape. The absolutely smooth design of the cabinet as well as the baffle should effectively prevent disturbing reflections. This also applies to the design of the construction, as it is stated that not a single screw should interfere with the propagation of the sound, so that it can be easily detached from the baffle.

For the compact speaker, the company promises an outstanding acoustic performance with enormous dynamics and spatiality. Even in the low bass, the speaker should play precisely and powerfully, reproducing the mid-range with naturalness and the uppermost frequencies with transparency.

The drivers of the new T+A Pulsar R 21 have also been refined to achieve this. Modified vibrating parts, magnet systems and diaphragms have been optimised to give greater linearity, dynamics and playing pleasure.

A 150 mm bass/midrange driver, originally based on the long-throw bass driver of the T+A Pulsar ST 21, and a high-tech dome tweeter with a 25 mm special diaphragm with very low natural resonance are used for this purpose.

The T+A Pulsar R 21 is designed for amplifiers with an impedance of 4 Ohms and a sensitivity of 85 dB, and is capable of handling a rated output of 80 Watts or a music load of 120 Watts. According to the manufacturer’s specifications it should be able to reproduce a frequency range between 40 Hz and 30 kHz. The cut-off frequency is specified as 2 kHz.

With the new T+A Pulsar R 21 the Herford-based company is not only talking about an ideal solution for smaller rooms and as an alternative to floor-standing loudspeaker systems in difficult installation conditions, but also points to it as a loudspeaker system with an excellent price/performance ratio.

The new T+A Pulsar R 21 should be available from specialist dealers at the recommended retail price of € 1,400 per pair. As described above, the customer can choose between a white or black finish.
