From Rega Nd9 to a Complete Moving Coil System

The previous Rega Planar 6 RS Edition package was built around the Rega Nd9 Moving Magnet cartridge. Limited availability of the cantilever required for that model has now led Rega Research Limited to rethink the offer.

The straightforward response would have been to substitute another Moving Magnet design. Rega has chosen a more fundamental change: the revised edition uses the Rega Ania Moving Coil cartridge, while the complete package also contains a Rega Fono MC Mk4.

That addition matters because it removes one of the usual questions surrounding a move from MM to MC. A system with a suitable MC input can, of course, accept the Rega Ania directly. Owners of amplifiers equipped only with line-level inputs or an MM phono stage, however, also receive the necessary signal amplification as part of the package.

Rega Research Limited therefore envisages two configurations of the Rega Planar 6 RS Edition. One combines the turntable with the Rega Ania MC for users who already own a compatible phono preamplifier. The second is the complete package featured here, comprising the turntable, the factory-fitted cartridge and the Rega Fono MC Mk4.

Planar 8 Engineering in the Familiar Rega Format

The letters RS stand for Rega Special. Although the Rega Planar 6 RS Edition adopts several important design elements from the more costly Rega Planar 8, it retains the conventional rectangular form associated with Rega turntables, including a full-size tinted dust cover.

At the centre of the construction is a particularly light plinth with a Tancast 8 foam core. Rega combines this with a rigid phenolic HPL layer and the brushed aluminium surface that visually distinguishes the RS Edition.

This choice follows the manufacturer’s long-established low-mass design philosophy. Rega does not attempt to control unwanted energy by adding substantial mass. Its aim is instead to create a light, rigid support for the main bearing, motor and tonearm that stores as little energy as possible before feeding it back into the replay system with a delay.

Rega Double Brace Technology Focuses Rigidity Where It Matters

Rega Double Brace Technology reinforces the mechanical relationship between the base of the tonearm and the platter’s main bearing. Two braces link these areas directly, concentrating additional rigidity precisely where stable geometry is most important for accurate record tracking.

This targeted reinforcement allows Rega Research Limited to avoid making the entire plinth heavier. The company can strengthen the critical section of the turntable while remaining faithful to the lightweight construction principle behind the Rega Planar 6 RS Edition.

Rega RB880 Tonearm from the Planar 8

Another direct connection with the next model up the range is the Rega RB880 tonearm, normally used on the Rega Planar 8. It is assembled by hand and employs an aluminium vertical bearing housing alongside a redesigned stainless-steel sleeve and bearing shaft.

The tonearm tube has been developed with a deliberate distribution of mass throughout the structure. According to Rega Research Limited, this is intended to reduce potential resonance points, while carefully matched bearing assemblies allow the tonearm to move with virtually no friction.

Rega also supplies the RB880 with its own low-capacitance phono cable and high-quality RCA connectors. A dedicated stainless-steel counterweight completes the tonearm installation.

Rega Ania MC Arrives Mounted and Adjusted

The Rega Ania MC draws on technical principles also found in the higher-positioned Rega Apheta and Rega Aphelion cartridges. Its generator combines a hand-wound micro coil with a powerful neodymium magnet and an iron micro cross.

A precisely manufactured elliptical diamond stylus tracks the record groove. The cartridge body is made from highly rigid PPS and uses Rega’s three-point mounting system. When installed on a Rega tonearm, this arrangement automatically establishes the intended overhang.

More importantly for the owner, the Rega Ania MC is installed and adjusted on the RB880 at the factory. Setting up a sensitive Moving Coil cartridge is among the more delicate parts of commissioning a turntable, so removing that task makes the package considerably easier to put into service.

Twin-Belt Drive and a Hand-Matched Motor

A low-noise 24 V synchronous motor drives the Rega Planar 6 RS Edition. Each motor is individually matched to its Rega Neo Mk2 Turntable PSU, a process intended to minimise vibration and maintain the target rotational speed as accurately as possible.

One feature distinguishing the RS Edition from the standard Rega Planar 6 is its CNC-machined Twin Drive pulley. Rather than using a single belt, it drives the aluminium sub-platter through two Rega Reference EBLT belts. Rega Research Limited states that this dual-belt arrangement is designed to improve the transfer of force, speed stability and wow and flutter performance.

The record itself rests on a 16 mm platter formed from two layers of clear Opti-white float glass.

Rega Neo Mk2 Turntable PSU Controls the Motor

The Rega Neo Mk2 Turntable PSU is part of the standard Rega Planar 6 RS Edition specification and is individually tuned to the turntable’s motor. It provides electronic speed selection and allows the rotational speed to be corrected in increments of 0.01 rpm.

A dedicated circuit is intended to suppress vibration generated by the motor. The external unit should therefore be regarded not merely as the turntable’s power source, but as an integral part of its motor control system.

Rega Fono MC Mk4 Completes the Signal Path

A Moving Coil cartridge generates a particularly low output voltage and therefore requires a phono stage designed for that type of signal. In this package, the Rega Fono MC Mk4 performs that role.

The phono preamplifier has been developed specifically for Moving Coil cartridges and offers adjustment options for different electrical requirements. Rega can consequently supply a coordinated analogue replay chain extending from the Rega Ania MC and Rega RB880 to the amplification of the cartridge’s delicate output signal.

Its inclusion also makes the new bundle relevant to buyers whose current amplifier does not provide an MC phono input. A conventional line-level input is all that is required after the Rega Fono MC Mk4.

Getting to the Point

What began as a response to the restricted availability of the Rega Nd9 cantilever has produced a considerably more compelling package.
