With the new PSB Speakers PWM Series, the Canadian loudspeaker manufacturer PSB Speakers now wants to offer loudspeaker systems that are designed solely for wall mounting and are therefore particularly flat, yet still very powerful. Three models are available: PSB Speakers PWM 1, PSB Speakers PWM 2 and PSB Speakers PWM 3.
Special concepts are required to be able to integrate a classic HiFi system or even a surround system into the living room, even if you don’t want to sacrifice any space for loudspeaker systems of conventional design. Of course, one could make do with particularly small solutions, as some very well-known manufacturers have been offering them for years, but for really appealing results, there must be a little more than small plastic parts that are useless without fat subwoofers.
Here, we recommend either built-in speaker systems from established manufacturers, or solutions that are designed as wall-mounted systems – products such as those now offered by the Canadian company PSB Speakers in the form of the new PSB Speakers PWM series, specifically with the systems PSB Speakers PWM 1, PSB Speakers PWM 2 and PSB Speakers PWM 3.
With the models of the new PSB Speakers PWM series, the company offers a trio of particularly slim, powerful speaker systems that can be used particularly flexibly as wall-mounted speaker systems, whether in pure stereo or as left and right channel, centre speaker or surround speaker. The Canadian manufacturer even refers to the systems PSB Speakers PWM 1, PSB Speakers PWM 2 and PSB Speakers PWM 3 as high-performance speakers, which, and this is particularly exciting, can be used both horizontally and vertically.
According to PSB Speakers, conventional concepts are not able to integrate loudspeaker systems as discreetly as possible into the living environment. This is why the new PSB Speakers PWM Series was developed, which was designed as a particularly slim solution, and which, with its modern but deliberately simple design concept, fits into any living environment. The three models available here, PSB Speakers PWM 1, PSB Speakers PWM 2 and PSB Speakers PWM 3, are similar in width and depth, only the length is different and is of course due to the different equipment.
All three models measure no more than 165 mm in width, while the overall depth of all three solutions is only 85 mm. The smallest model in the new series, the PSB Speakers PWM 1, is 771 mm high, the PSB Speakers PWM 2 is 914 mm high and the PSB Speakers PWM 3 is 1,219 mm high.
Naturally, all three models are supplied with a suitable wall mounting solution, after all, this is the very purpose of these systems. A loudspeaker grill is also included in the scope of delivery, which fortunately is held in position by magnets, so that even if it is not used during operation, nothing will disturb the flawless appearance. The new PSB Speakers PWM 1, PSB Speakers PWM 2 as well as PSB Speakers PWM 3 are offered in matt white or black lacquer, the manufacturer speaks of Satin White and Satin Black, whereby the just mentioned loudspeaker grill is held in the respective matching design. The basis of the construction is MDF.
By the way, the design was created by Paul Barton himself, who founded the company PSB Speakers in 1972 and is still working as Chief Designer today. He was also responsible for the final tuning of the loudspeaker systems.
According to the manufacturer, all models will feature new drivers developed specifically for these solutions. The low and mid-range drivers are based on four-layer voice coils with powerful magnets and carbon-fibre diaphragms and a high-quality rubber surround for exceptional detail, low distortion and superior power handling. The new proprietary 1-inch titanium dome tweeter is ferrofluid cooled and features a neodymium magnet for high sensitivity and power handling. A so-called wave guide on the front of the tweeter is designed to help ensure a particularly harmonious transition to the midrange or bass drivers, as well as the best possible dispersion into the room.
All three models are, of course, characterised by a so-called D’Appolito arrangement, since both vertical and horizontal mounting should be possible. The tweeter is thus always integrated centrally in the baffle and is flanked by the other drivers on the left and right or top and bottom. An interesting feature is that all models are bass-reflex systems, so that even the comparatively small volume of the cabinet is optimally used for rich sound.
The model PSB Speakers PWM 1 is equipped with two 4 inch woofers, which are combined with a 1 inch Titanium Dome Tweeter. With an impedance of 8 ohms and an efficiency of 85 dB, it is designed to cover a frequency range between 70 Hz and 23 kHz.
The PSM Speakers PWM 2 uses two 4 inch woofers as bass drivers, two 3 inch midrange drivers and of course a 1 inch tweeter. With an impedance of 8 ohms and an efficiency of 86 dB, a frequency response between 70 Hz and 23 kHz can be reproduced.
For the largest model in the new PSB Speakers PWM series, the PSB Speakers PWM 3, the developers have opted for a combination of four 4-inch woofers, two 3-inch mid-range drivers and a 1-inch tweeter. The sensitivity is specified here at 86 dB, the impedance at 8 ohms, and the frequency response at 60 Hz up to 35 kHz.
The technical data clearly show that, despite the fine driver configuration and bass reflex design, it is impossible to outwit the physics. All three models do not really reach too low in the bass range. It is therefore only logical that PSB Speakers recommends the combination with a matching subwoofer, whereby the particularly slim PSB Speakers CSIR SUB In-Room Subwoofer is the perfect solution, with the matching amplifier in the form of the new PSB Speakers CS 500W Digital Subwoofer Amplifier. This is a subwoofer that is also designed for wall mounting, but thanks to its flat design can also be used underneath furniture, especially the couch. An alternative would also be an in-wall subwoofer, as offered in PSB Speakers in the Custom Installation section.
“Following up on our long-time success of the PSB W1 on-wall, the PWM Series was conceived based on direct feedback we have received from the CI marketplace. Whether as part of a complete on wall system, a basic TV application or as an on-wall center channel solution for floor standing speakers; we believe the PWM models will exceed expectations in every way. These three PWM models have been created solely with the professional installer and their clients, in mind.”Joe de Jesus, Lenbrook’s product manager for custom installations
The new models of the PSB Speakers PWM Series should be available in specialist shops these days. The company states a recommended retail price of € 899,- for the new PSB Speakers PWM 1, the PSB Speakers PWM 2 is stated at € 1.749,- and the PSB Speakers PWM 3 at € 2.749,-, all these prices being unit prices.
Getting to the point
If loudspeaker systems are to be integrated as discreetly as possible into the living environment, this cannot be achieved satisfactorily with conventional concepts, says PSB Speakers. This is why the new PSB Speakers PWM Series was developed, which was designed as a particularly slim solution and which, with its modern but deliberately simple design concept, fits into any living environment. The three models available here, PSB Speakers PWM 1, PSB Speakers PWM 2 and PSB Speakers PWM 3, are similar in width and depth, only the length is different and is of course due to the different equipment.
