Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 - Sound aesthetics from Switzerland

It is the perfect symbiosis of noble design, connectivity and incomparable sound, this is how the Swiss company Piega SA describes the new, now already second generation of the Piega Premium Wireless Series, which they simply called Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2.

Story Highlights
  • Once again, the company wants to set new standards in wireless music playback and is presenting the new Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 for this purpose, according to Piega SA.

The Piega Premium Wireless Series is now in its second generation, whereby the Swiss company Piega SA has once again taken a very pragmatic approach to naming the new Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2. Of course, the new Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 has the task of continuing the success of the first generation; more than that, Piega SA has set itself the goal of once again setting new standards with the latest generation. For this purpose, the models of the new Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 present solutions that represent a perfect symbiosis of elegant design, connectivity and a particularly outstanding sound.

The new systems of the Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 in the form of the models Piega Premium 301 Wireless Series Gen2, Piega Premium 501 Wireless Series Gen2 and Piega Premium 701 Wireless Series Gen2 are each intended to form a fully-fledged hi-fi system of the most modern design in the form of elegant loudspeaker systems, with the Piega connect or the Piega connect plus representing the central element and thus the connection to the outside world.

Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 – The second generation

The basic concept has not been changed in any way, quite the contrary, but the innovations that have been made in the generation change to the new Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 are more than remarkable, according to Piega SA.

The solutions of the new Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 are once again based on active loudspeaker systems, which can also be called Wireless Active Speakers, even though they completely correspond to the traditional specifications of high-end hi-fi speakers of the Piega SA brand.

The Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 presents itself as a line-up of shapely active speakers with slim aluminium housings, the developers trust in high-quality transducer technology and rely on a remarkable flexibility in the feed options, here of course first and foremost “wireless”.

Last but not least, the now closed construction as well as a completely new sound tuning and a linearisation by DSP are supposed to ensure a particularly precise and controlled reproduction as well as highest impulse fidelity.

Room calibration guarantees that the new Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 can be placed flexibly in the room and that a detailed, dynamically balanced and natural sound is achieved even if the room acoustics are not perfect.

Classic virtues of a loudspeaker manufacturer

As already described, Piega SA naturally follows all the virtues that apply to all loudspeaker systems of the premium class with the new Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2, whereby the Swiss usually use aluminium as a material for their loudspeaker cabinets and thus achieve particularly elegant, slim shapes.

This also applies to the models of the new Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2, although we have already briefly mentioned that they now use a closed construction instead of a bass reflex system,

All loudspeaker systems of the new Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 are of course united by a basically uniform driver configuration. First and foremost, a so-called LDR driver is used as a tweeter, either a Piega LDR-2642-MKII or a Piega LDR-3056, which is supposed to provide an airy, finely resolved and impulse-accurate sound. Depending on the model, this is combined with different MDS low-mid drivers.

Piega Premium 301 Wireless Gen2

The Piega Premium 301 Wireless Gen2 is a compact two-way system designed as a bookshelf speaker system, combining a Piega LDR-2642-MKII with a 140 mm MDS bass-midrange driver.

Driven by a Class D amplifier module, 100 watts are available here and a frequency range between 35 Hz and 35 kHz can be reproduced.

With dimensions of 34 x 18 x 23 cm, the new Piega Premium 301 Wireless Gen2 weighs an impressive 9 kg.

Piega Premium 501 Wireless Gen2

The new Piega Premium 501 Wireless Gen2 is the smaller of the two floorstanding speaker systems in the Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2, although it weighs in at an impressive 22 kg with dimensions of just 101 x 16 x 21 cm.

The developers used a three-way system with a Piega LDR-2642-MKII ribbon driver, a 120 mm MDF midrange driver and four 120 mm MDR woofers to cover a frequency range between 30 Hz and 35 kHz. The Class D amplifier module delivers an impressive 180 watts.

Piega Premium 701 Wireless Gen2

The new Piega Premium 701 Wireless Gen2 is the top model of the new Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2, a three-way floorstanding loudspeaker system that is also very slim, measuring just 106 x 18 x 23 cm, but still weighs in at 29 kg.

The developers rely on the Piega LDR-3056 ribbon driver in combination with a 140 mm MDS midrange and four 140 mm MDS woofers, which are driven by a Class D amplifier module with an impressive 200 watts.

This covers a frequency range between 28 Hz and 35 kHz, as the data sheet of the loudspeaker system reveals.

Piega connect and Piega connect plus

As already mentioned, the Piega connect or the Piega connect plus represents the central interface of every loudspeaker system of the Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2. It forms the interface to the outside world and controls the wireless speakers, thus, if you want to put it this way, it basically takes over the task of a preamplifier.

The Piega connect serves as an interface between the wireless speakers of the Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 and an existing hi-fi system or a multi-room system, according to the manufacturer’s description. The Piega connect has a line in, an optical and coaxial S/PDIF interface, a line out as well as Bluetooth with support for SBC, AAC and aptX. The signal transmission to the speakers is wireless, at 24 bit and 96 kHz.

The Piega connect plus is much more versatile, as it turns every pair of speakers in the Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 into an independent, flexible hi-fi chain. Incidentally, Piega SA already introduced the Piega connect plus in April 2022, so it was already available for the first generation product line.

The Piega connect plus also offers analogue inputs in the form of a pair of RCA sockets and a 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack. There is no lack of digital audio inputs in the form of three optical and one coaxial S/PDIF interface. In addition, there is a USB Type B port for direct connection to a PC or Mac as well as an HDMI port with support for ARC (Audio Return Channel) and HDMI CEC for central control in combination with a TV.

But that’s not all: Bluetooth 4.2 with support for the SBC and AAC codecs as well as aptX is also found here, but above all an integrated WiFi module for extensive streaming functionality.

It should also be mentioned that the signal transmission to the speakers is done via radio, more precisely based on the KleerNET and thus the Kleer Wireless Technology, whereby 24 bit and 96 kHz are used.

From Spotify to Roon-ready, Apple AirPlay 2 and Google Chromecast

First of all, the Piega connect plus functions in the network as a dlna-certified UPnP streaming client, but it can also rely on Apple AirPlay 2 as well as Google Chromecast. In addition, it supports Spotify directly via Spotify Connect and is designated as Roon-ready by Roon Labs LLC.

Of course, the entire system can also be controlled very conveniently via WiFi using the Piega Control App for Apple iOS and Google Android. This app is not only for simple control, it also allows the already mentioned room calibration and provides access to further functions of the DSP-based signal processing integrated in the Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2, such as the adjustment to different room situations (neutral, wall, corner) and a loudness function.

A bi-directional remote control is also included in the scope of delivery, which should also contribute to the fact that the solutions of the Piega Premium Wireless Series Gen2 can be operated particularly comfortably.
