Monitor Audio Studio 89 – A tribute to the 1980s

It was in 1989 that the English loudspeaker manufacturer Monitor Audio Ltd. first presented one of the company’s most legendary product lines, the Monitor Audio Studio Series. Over the years, this product line has become a great success and thus an extremely important series for the English company, so that it has now decided to erect a kind of monument to it.

And that with a special model produced in a limited edition, the Monitor Audio Studio 89, which is to be understood on the one hand as an outstanding solution of the aforementioned Monitor Audio Studio Series, but also as a tribute to the 1980s as a whole, a crazy, colourful time characterised by unique creativity, as Monitor Audio Ltd. explains.

Monitor Audio Studio 89 – more than just another retro speaker

It is a trend that has been observed on the market for some time now: many manufacturers are focusing on solutions that play with a certain vintage charm, reviving vintage HiFi and selected HiFi legends. It is therefore not surprising that Monitor Audio Ltd. explicitly points out that the new Monitor Audio Studio 89 is not just another retro speaker, but rather a homage to its spiritual predecessors, which has been significantly upgraded in terms of both appearance and technology.

A tribute to the Monitor Audio Studio Series

As already mentioned, the history of the Monitor Audio Studio Series goes back to 1989, when the English company presented this product line for the first time. It is recorded that the entire product line was the first from the company Monitor Audio Ltd. in which both the tweeter, a Monitor Audio C-CAM tweeter, and the low-midrange drivers and woofers were made of metal, which was a real revolution at the time, as emphasised. The Monitor Audio Studio 15 was a very special solution.

The Monitor Audio Studio 15 also featured drivers made entirely of metal, but the designers added a very special touch here by colouring the membranes gold.

To emphasise this design feature, the Monitor Audio Studio 15 was given a high-gloss black lacquered cabinet in 1989, making it the only speaker in the product line to be offered in this special finish at the time.

Elegant appearance, equipped with the latest technology

Naturally, the new Monitor Audio Studio 89 also comes in a cabinet with a high-gloss black finish, but here you can score points with the highest precision of the latest manufacturing technologies, with a wall thickness of an impressive 15 mm, and the baffle is even 18 mm thick.

The drivers of the speaker are also gold-coloured here, with the manufacturer describing the gently shimmering, matt surface as having an incomparable, timeless look.

The drivers are a Monitor Audio MDP III tweeter and a Monitor Audio RDT III woofer and midrange driver, which, according to the manufacturer, were taken directly from the Monitor Audio Hyphn and the Monitor Audio Platinum 3G Series and perfectly matched to each other with a specially developed crossover for the new Monitor Audio Studio 89. Not least for this reason, it should be mentioned in passing, Monitor Audio Ltd. is talking about an outrageously affordable speaker system in the case of the new Monitor Audio Studio 89. The drivers are supported by a Monitor Audio HiVe II bass reflex system.

The new Monitor Audio Studio 89 is now available from specialist retailers, but, as already mentioned, only in limited numbers. The recommended retail price is € 2.348,- per pair. It should also be mentioned that the Monitor Audio Studio 89 Stand is available as a matching stand, which costs € 600,- per pair.

Monitor Audio Ltd. will only be offering the Monitor Audio Studio 89 in a strictly limited number of units. This loudspeaker system is a homage to the 1980s as a whole, but primarily to the Monitor Audio Studio Series, which was first launched in 1989 and is regarded by Monitor Audio Ltd. as a revolution. The Monitor Audio Studio 15 model in particular was a particularly attractive loudspeaker system at the time, so it was used as the basis for the Monitor Audio Studio 89 that has now been presented.
