Story Highlights
  • This special design variant of the portable D/A converter from iFi Audio, the iFi Audio hip dac 2 gold edition, will only be available in a limited edition.

To celebrate the immense success of the iFi Audio hip dac – 20,000 units of which have already been sold worldwide in the form of the iFi Audio hip dac and iFi Audio hip dac2 – iFi Audio is now presenting this portable D/A converter in a limited edition as the iFi Audio hip dac 2 gold edition. According to the English specialist for portable audio solutions, the bestseller has been wrapped in gold to celebrate its immense success.

Apart from the design, the new limited edition iFi Audio hip dac 2 gold edition is said to be no different from the regular series model iFi Audio hip dac2, although the manufacturer does admit that one or two performance optimisations have been made.

iFi Audio hip dac2 – Portable Hi-res Audio DAC and Headphone Amplifier

The iFi Audio hip dac2 is a particularly slim, lightweight solution for appealing music enjoyment on the go. This in turn is based on the iFi audio hip-dac, which the specialist for personal audio devices iFi Audio already designed as a very high-quality solution for use in conjunction with smartphones and tablets.

While the iFi Audio hip dac2 is quite colourful, the new iFi Audio hip dac 2 gold edition is now – nomen est omen – in radiant gold, at least large parts of the slim device.

In radiant gold

As before, the housing of the portable D/A converter and headphone amplifier is made of an extruded aluminium profile, which is now anodised in gold. The front sides, on the other hand, form an attractive contrast in matt black, especially as the control elements shine in gold.

Technical specifications

The iFi Audio hip dac 2 gold edition can be connected via USB-C to smartphones and tablets, but of course also to notebooks, whereby an XMOS 16 core processor from XMOS Technology is used for optimal data transfer, the USB-C interface corresponds to USB 3.0, and signal processing with 24 bits and 384 kHz or DSD up to DSD256 is carried out via a DAC from Texas Instruments and content encoded in lossy MQA is also supported.

There is an unbalanced 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack as well as a balanced connection option in the form of a 4.4 mm PENTACONN, whereby the unbalanced connection option provides the portable D/A converter and headphone amplifier with 280 mW at 32 ohms and 3.2 V, and the balanced connection provides 400 mW at 32 ohms and 6.3 V. The D/A converter and headphone amplifier can also be connected via the balanced connection.

Technologies such as iFi Audio PowerMatch, iFi Audio S-Balanced Circuit or iFi Audio XBass, which have been developed and constantly optimised by iFi Audio for years, are of course also available here.

Prices and availability

The new iFi Audio hip dac 2 gold edition should be available in specialist shops within the next few days. Unfortunately, we do not yet know whether the English company will charge a surcharge for the limited edition or whether it will also be offered at a price of € 189,-.

Getting to the point

The new iFi Audio hip dac 2 gold edition is meant to celebrate the great success of the portable D/A converter and headphone amplifier from the house of iFi Audio, the iFi Audio hip dac or iFi Audio hip dac2 a, because after all, 20,000 of them were sold. The iFi Audio hip dac 2 gold edition is presented in radiant gold and is technically based on the current iFi Audio hip dac2 model – except for some details.
