FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds – The Alternative to Classic In-ear Headphones

The new FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds from FiiO Electronics Technology Co. Ltd. are not in-ear headphones in the classic sense, but rather so-called earbuds.

FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds, with which the Chinese specialist for personal audio devices FiiO Electronics Technology Co. Ltd. once again presents new headphones that expand the company’s already very broad range in this area. What is interesting here is that these are not in-ear headphones of the classic design, but rather so-called earbuds. Also noteworthy is once again the technical equipment that this solution has and that is supposed to make them particularly high-quality headphones that can inspire even demanding music lovers.

FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds – The Alternative to Classic In-ear Headphones

While in-ear headphones are pushed directly into the ear canal, earbuds only rest in the user’s ear cup. Some users find this design much more comfortable, and it is precisely these users that FiiO Electronics Technology Co. Ltd. wants to address by offering them a particularly high-quality solution.

Particularly elegant housing made of surface-treated stainless steel

The new FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds are made of stainless steel, to be precise polished 316L stainless steel, with two versions available. Firstly, there is a version in precisely this polished stainless steel version – Cosmic Silver – and also a version in black – Elegant Black – whereby a surface finish applied by means of PVD electroplating is used in each case.

The cover of the case is made of safety glass, which is supposed to offer a particularly noble shine through a special embossing when exposed to light.

Case in the style of a timpani and flute

The new FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds have a special housing shape that is divided into two chambers. The design of these chambers is based on the shape of a kettledrum in order to achieve a particularly rich, powerful reproduction. The manufacturer itself refers to this as a drum type dual cavity design, which was considered so essential that it was also included in the product name.

A flute is also said to have served as a model for the developers, namely for the connection between the two parts of the chassis, whereby FiiO Electronics Technology Co. Ltd. speaks of a bass-enhancing acoustic flute design, thus describing a controlled air flow between the two halves of the cabinet that is tuned to special frequencies.

Generously dimensioned driver

The heart of the new FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds, however, is of course its driver, which is particularly generously dimensioned with a diameter of no less than 14.2 mm. A very special combination of materials is used here, in the form of a so-called LCP diaphragm. The actual diaphragm is coated with beryllium and has a polyurethane rim.

Another essential component of the driver is its drive, which is based on an ultra-fine copper-clad aluminium Daikoku voice coil of Japanese manufacture.

To ensure a secure fit and at the same time optimal sound, the new FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds are supplied with three pairs of ear tips, which are not called Ear-Tips here, but Sponge Covers, and which are supposed to differ not in size, but in the sound that can be achieved with them. The manufacturer refers to these as “bass-enhancement”, “balanced” and “transparent treble-focused” versions.

High-quality cable with variable plug

Once again, the developers of the new FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds rely on a cable made of high-purity copper with silver coating, and the plug is a very exciting and flexible solution.

These are twist-lock swappable plugs, which can be used either as 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack or as 4-pin 4.4 mm plugs. However, this is not a development by FiiO Electronics Technology Co. Ltd. but rather a patented solution by Fabrilous. The new FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds can therefore be used not only unbalanced, but also directly balanced.

Pricing and availability

The new FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds should be available in specialist shops soon. The manufacturer gives a recommended retail price of € 89,-.

Getting to the point

It is mainly because James Chung, CEO of FiiO Electronics Technology Co. Ltd. himself is not really a fan of classic in-ear headphones that they always offer alternatives like the new FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds. Such earbuds do not have to be inserted into the ear canal, but rather rest directly in the pinna of the ear and, as with the new FiiO FF3 Drum Type Dual-Cavity Earbuds, should still be able to offer outstanding sound.
