Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier – The New Norwegian Flagship

The new Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier is set to replace the Electrocompaniet AW 600 NEMO, making this new amplifier the most powerful of its kind and the new flagship amplifier in the Electrocompaniet A/S product range.

With the new Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier, the Norwegian high-end hi-fi manufacturer Electrocompaniet A/S is now presenting a particularly powerful amplifier that will take over from the Electrocompaniet AW 600 NEMO. The Norwegians speak of a system that has been newly developed from the ground up and that has everything it takes to fulfil its role as the new flagship in the field of amplifier systems at Electrocompaniet A/S in the best possible way. Above all, the flexibility offered by the Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier is remarkable, making it an extremely versatile solution that can be used in a wide variety of configurations.

Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier – Stereo, Mono or Bi-amping Mode

Electrocompaniet A/S particularly emphasises the possibility of operating the new Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier in different configurations. The amplifier system offers the user three options: stereo mode, mono mode and bi-amping mode.

These three operating modes are intended to ensure that the new Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier can be used at any time for existing as well as new system configurations, and the company speaks of the highest possible investment security that is offered to the customer.

Unique sound signature

For all the changes and improvements made to the Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier over previous amplifier systems, one thing that has not changed, says Electrocompaniet A/S, is its unique design philosophy and sound signature.

The Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier incorporates a so-called direct-coupled, open-loop, high-bandwidth topology, further enhanced by high slew rate and very high bandwidth amplifier stages.

In addition, a completely new output stage has been developed that effectively shields the input and driver stages from the load, guaranteeing flexible use of a wide variety of loudspeaker systems.

Electrocompaniet A/S is convinced that the Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier will deliver almost negligible distortion, regardless of the loudspeaker system used. The output stage has a total of 32 bipolar high-current output transistors with high bandwidth, which can provide very high currents at any time.

Optimised power supply

A central component is, of course, the power supply, which has once again been optimised to provide 21,0000 µF. At the heart of the power supply is a double toroidal transformer that is magnetically and electrostatically shielded and relies on sophisticated filters to prevent any noise.

The internal grounding has been deliberately oversized to be kept completely free of rectifying and output currents. This, too, contributes significantly to achieving a very clean, noise-free output signal that provides a very stable soundstage with the blackest background possible at any volume, regardless of the output power, the Norwegians promise.

Extremely potent amplifier system

As befits a flagship high-end power amplifier, the new Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier naturally boasts impressive power. The manufacturer specifies two times 300 watts for speaker systems with an impedance of 8 ohms, two times 600 watts for a load of 4 ohms, and two times 1.000 watts for a load of only 2 ohms. If the new Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier is used in mono mode, 800 watts are available at 8 ohms, 1.500 watts at 4 ohms and an impressive 2.200 watts at 2 ohms.

The new Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier measures 41 cm in width, 30 cm in height and 49 cm in depth, making it weigh an impressive 55 kg.

Of course, the solution is presented in the well-known current design line of the Norwegian high-end hi-fi manufacturer in discreet black with an elegant front made of plexiglass, on which only the manufacturer’s name and logo are emblazoned, and a main switch can be found.

Of course, the new Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier leaves nothing to be desired when it comes to connections: the inputs and outputs are available both as unbalanced RCAs and balanced XLRs, and trigger connections for integration into control solutions are of course also included. The connections for the loudspeaker systems are made in the proven manner in the form of particularly high-quality screw terminals.

Prices and availability

The new Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier made its debut at the High End 2022 in Munich, and as promised by Electrocompaniet A/S, this solution will now be available at the end of November 2022. The recommended retail price for this solution is now even a little lower than originally communicated as a guideline. The Norwegians stated that one would have to reckon with about € 24.000,-, but in fact the recommended retail price is now € 21.499,-.

Getting to the point

The Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier, which Electrocompaniet A/S presented for the first time at the High End 2022, should prove to be a worthy new flagship and will soon be available. The new Electrocompaniet AW 800 M Power Amplifier is said to distinguish itself not only by the enormous power it can provide with a particularly distortion-free, clean performance, but also by the flexibility it offers through three operating modes – stereo, mono and bi-amping.
