Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier – The small integrated amplifier

It delivers the natural sound and precision of Copland with transistor technology at a particularly attractive price, according to the description of the new stereo integrated amplifier Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier.

The new Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier is a solution that makes the special character of Copland solutions available at a particularly attractive price. The new stereo integrated amplifier is the new “small one”, according to the description of the Danes, but it clearly has the DNA that distinguishes all solutions from Copland.

With the new Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier, the Danish hi-fi manufacturer addresses price-sensitive audiophile music lovers.

Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier – Unique Natural Sound

Copland has a long history of fine solutions. Founded in the mid-1980s by Ole Møller, the company’s philosophy has always been to develop exquisite audio solutions for hi-fi enthusiasts who are looking for something special, with a particular focus on amplifier systems.

The latest addition is the Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier, which represents Copland’s new entry.

It took a great deal of effort to create a stereo integrated amplifier in transistor technology that has the unique natural sound that has always been characteristic of all solutions from the Danish company.

An amplifier focused on the essentials

It is striking that the new Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier is a solution that is deliberately focussed on the essentials and can therefore be described as simple. However, and this should be explicitly emphasised, the new Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier nevertheless includes all important features to function as a flexible control centre of a modern hi-fi chain.

Integrated D/A converter and phono preamplifier

The Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier is a stereo integrated amplifier that is equipped for both analogue and digital sources, i.e. it has an integrated D/A converter.

The Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier not only has three analogue inputs, but also four digital inputs, one coaxial and two optical S/PDIF interfaces plus a USB port. The USB port is USB Type B and can be used for direct connection to a PC or Mac, with asynchronous data transfer.

A Wolfson 8740 DAC is used as the converter, which processes signals with up to 24 bits and 192 kHz and for which no separate drivers are required for the Apple macOS and Linux operating systems. For Microsoft Windows, the manufacturer naturally provides suitable drivers for the Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier on its website.

The new Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier has a phono preamplifier, which can be used with MM cartridges, and a headphone connection on the front, which is a 6.3 mm stereo jack.

It should also be mentioned that the new Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier has a regulated pre-out and a line-out with a fixed level, whereby these are of course in the form of cinch sockets.

Bluetooth module optionally available

For those who want to connect mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets, but also portable hi-res audio players, to the Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier, an optional Bluetooth interface is available. In addition to the lossy codec SBC, it also supports the lossless codec aptX and even aptX HD for hi-res audio with at least 24 bits and 48 kHz.

Two 70-watt outputs

The new Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier is certainly not a performance behemoth, but it does deliver 70 watts twice in Class AB, which is a solid configuration for a fine hi-fi chain.

It is worth mentioning in this context that a transistor amplifier is the exception at Copland; its bigger brothers Copland CSA100 Integrated Amplifier and Copland CSA150 Integrated Amplifier rely on tubes in the preamplifier.

The preamplifier section of the Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier has an almost negligible distortion, according to the manufacturer’s promise, and the output stage is designed like that of its bigger siblings. This means that it also acts faster than conventional layouts due to a special feedback architecture and covers a very wide frequency range to ultimately achieve the impressive tonal naturalness promised by the manufacturer.

The amplifier is also designed to cope with even the most difficult loudspeaker situations, allowing it to perfectly control a wide range of loudspeaker systems.

The new Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier controls the volume with the help of a motorised analogue volume control, which, according to the manufacturer, is a superior design to digital volume controls because it does not require any additional electronics in the signal path.

Elegant appearance

The new Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier naturally presents itself in the reduced but extremely elegant design line familiar from the Danish manufacturer. The cabinet, measuring 435 x 135 x 370 mm and weighing 10 kg, has a brushed aluminium front panel.

In addition to the aforementioned volume control, the front panel features a rotary encoder for input selection and another smaller rotary switch for digital input selection. Centrally arranged is a ring of status LEDs to indicate the active input, in the middle of which the IR sensor is used as a striking design element.

Prices and availability

The new Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier is available immediately from specialist dealers. Customers can choose between a black or silver version. Of course, a matching remote control is included in the scope of delivery. The recommended retail price is listed at € 2,990.

Getting to the point

The Danish hi-fi manufacturer Copland is known as a specialist for particularly natural-sounding amplifier systems, whereby they usually rely on solutions that use tubes in the preamplifier and transistors in the power amplifier. This is not the case with the new Copland CSA70 Integrated Amplifier, which uses only transistor technology, but still wants to offer the very special natural sound character with precise performance that characterises all solutions from Copland.
