Pro-Ject Harley-Davidson Turntable – Limited Special Edition under the Sign of Bar & Shield

This collaboration between Pro-Ject Audio Systems and Harley-Davidson Inc. does not stop at a badge or a special paint finish. The entire chassis follows the outline of the Bar & Shield logo, supported by a substantial drive system, carefully controlled synchronous motor and 8.6-inch S-shaped tonearm. First shown at HIGH END Vienna 2026, the Limited Special Edition is now available for € 2.590,-.

Story Highlights
  • The Pro-Ject Harley-Davidson Turntable was created for vinyl enthusiasts who want their record player to make as strong a visual statement as a classic motorcycle. Beneath its unmistakable silhouette lies a serious manual turntable with an aluminium-MDF chassis, precision motor control, 300 mm glass platter and 915 g record puck. A pre-installed Pro-Ject Pick it PRO makes it ready to play after setup, while the SME-compatible headshell and 5-pin DIN output leave room for future cartridge and True Balanced upgrades.

A familiar logo on the plinth would have been the obvious route for a Harley-Davidson record player. Pro-Ject Audio Systems chose the harder one. Working with Harley-Davidson Inc., the Austrian company made the Bar & Shield emblem the structural and visual centre of the entire turntable.

That decision defines almost every aspect of the Pro-Ject Harley-Davidson Turntable. Its sculpted chassis combines black MDF with polished aluminium, while glass, stainless steel and genuine leather evoke details associated with classic motorcycles. Even the record mat has been selected to recall the character of a leather saddle.

Such a dramatic design inevitably raises a question: is this primarily a collector’s object or a credible analogue source? Pro-Ject’s answer comes through mass, material choice and mechanical detail. The Limited Special Edition uses a substantial belt-drive system, regulated motor supply, aluminium sub-platter, purpose-developed S-shaped tonearm and factory-aligned moving-magnet cartridge. Visitors to HIGH END Vienna 2026 were the first to see the result; the finished turntable is now being offered at € 2.590,-.

A Collaboration Built into the Chassis

The Bar & Shield outline is not applied decoration. It determines the footprint of the turntable itself and gives the Pro-Ject Harley-Davidson Turntable a form that cannot be mistaken for a conventional model carrying special-edition graphics.

Pro-Ject constructs the core from solid MDF without internal cavities. A precision-machined aluminium upper section reinforces the structure and provides the polished metallic surface that gives the turntable much of its motorcycle-inspired character. The combination is intended to bring together mass, stiffness and internal damping, thereby reducing the influence of unwanted mechanical resonances.

Three height-adjustable aluminium feet support the chassis. TPE damping within the feet provides additional isolation, while their adjustment allows the unusually shaped deck to be levelled accurately before the tonearm and cartridge are set up.

The choice of materials establishes a deliberate connection with Harley-Davidson without resorting to a literal recreation of motorcycle parts. Polished aluminium and stainless steel supply the mechanical visual language; black MDF creates contrast; the transparent glass platter exposes parts of the structure below; and the genuine leather mat adds a tactile reference to a motorcycle saddle.

Why 2,75 kg of Rotating Mass Matters

Pro-Ject has based the turntable on a belt-drive arrangement powered by a selected AC synchronous motor. The motor does not rely directly on the incoming mains frequency. A precision DC/AC generator creates its operating signal, allowing Pro-Ject to exercise tighter control over the motor supply and, according to the company, achieve more stable platter speed.

Both the motor pulley and the sub-platter are CNC-machined from aluminium. Pro-Ject specifies manufacturing tolerances reaching one-thousandth of a millimetre, an indication of the effort devoted to the parts that transfer the motor’s rotation to the record.

The use of aluminium for the sub-platter is particularly relevant. Rather than treating this component as a lightweight intermediary, Pro-Ject uses its additional mass and damping properties as an integral part of the drive concept. Above it sits the 300 mm glass main platter, chosen for its mass and low-resonance behaviour as well as for the clear view it provides of the distinctive construction underneath.

The glass platter, aluminium sub-platter and record puck together produce a rotating mass of 2,75 kg. That figure includes the most conspicuous accessory supplied with the turntable: a Harley-Davidson record puck weighing 915 g. It presses the record firmly against the leather mat and platter, creating a more secure mechanical connection between them.

Speed Changes without Moving the Belt

The Pro-Ject Harley-Davidson Turntable supports 33 and 45 rpm, selected electronically by a switch on the deck. Owners therefore do not have to remove the platter or reposition the belt whenever they change record format.

This apparently simple convenience is closely linked to the wider drive design. The synchronous motor, regenerated AC supply, accurately machined pulley and relatively heavy platter assembly are all intended to limit short- and long-term speed deviations. Pro-Ject consequently treats speed control as part of the turntable’s mechanical foundation rather than as an isolated electronic feature.

A Tonearm That Matches the Visual Concept

A straight black tonearm would have looked strangely anonymous on a record player of this kind. Instead, Pro-Ject has developed an 8.6-inch S-shaped arm from aluminium, giving the deck a component whose form and polished finish are as prominent as the chassis itself.

According to Pro-Ject, polishing the aluminium parts of the tonearm by hand takes around one working day. The visual finish is paired with a low-friction precision bearing assembly, a TPE-damped counterweight and internal wiring made from high-purity copper.

At the front of the arm is an SME-compatible removable headshell. This makes cartridge changes considerably easier than on an arm with a fixed headshell and allows owners to prepare alternative cartridge and headshell combinations for different records or future upgrades.

Anti-skating is handled by an adaptive gravity-based mechanism. Its effective force changes with the tonearm’s position above the record, with the aim of maintaining more consistent compensation as the stylus travels from the outer groove towards the centre.

Ready to Play, but Not Locked to One Cartridge

A Pro-Ject Pick it PRO moving-magnet cartridge is installed and aligned at the factory. Once the turntable itself has been positioned, levelled and given the necessary basic setup, there is no need for the owner to mount and align a cartridge before playing the first record.

That convenience does not turn the supplied cartridge into a fixed endpoint. The SME-compatible headshell invites later experimentation, and Pro-Ject states that the tonearm is suitable for use with high-quality moving-coil cartridges as well.

The audio signal leaves the turntable through a 5-pin DIN phono socket. Pro-Ject includes its semi-balanced Connect it Phono E 5P/RCA cable, allowing the turntable to be connected to a conventional phono stage with RCA inputs. With a suitable cartridge, phono electronics and cable, the 5-pin output also provides a route towards a True Balanced signal chain.

The Most Important Advantages at a Glance

  • Design developed around Harley-Davidson: The complete chassis follows the Bar & Shield outline instead of merely displaying the logo.
  • Substantial material construction: MDF, aluminium, glass, stainless steel and leather give the turntable both physical mass and a distinctive identity.
  • Carefully controlled belt drive: The AC synchronous motor is supplied by a precision DC/AC generator rather than operating directly from the mains.
  • Heavy rotating assembly: The platter, sub-platter and record puck provide a total rotating mass of 2.75 kg.
  • Purposeful tonearm design: The 8.6-inch S-shaped aluminium arm combines precision bearings, a damped counterweight and adaptive anti-skating.
  • Straightforward initial setup: The Pro-Ject Pick it PRO MM cartridge arrives mounted and aligned.
  • Scope for later upgrades: The removable SME-compatible headshell supports cartridge changes, including suitable MC designs.
  • Generous special-edition accessories: A leather mat, 915 g record puck and Pro-Ject Connect it Phono E 5P/RCA cable are included.

Price & Availability

The Pro-Ject Harley-Davidson Turntable is available as a Limited Special Edition priced at € 2.590,-. Pro-Ject Audio Systems has not stated how many examples will be produced.

A dust cover is available separately but is not included with the turntable.

Getting to the Point

The crucial distinction here is between a branded turntable and a turntable conceived around a brand. The Pro-Ject Harley-Davidson Turntable clearly belongs to the second category. Its outline, polished metal surfaces, leather mat and unusually heavy record puck make the connection with Harley-Davidson integral to the object rather than incidental decoration.

Pro-Ject has also given the concept an appropriately serious mechanical basis. The aluminium-MDF chassis, regenerated motor supply, heavy platter system, specially finished S-shaped tonearm and supplied Pick it PRO cartridge prevent the Limited Special Edition from becoming an expensive logo with a belt attached.

Restraint is not part of the proposition. Anyone seeking a discreet record player, or anyone without a particular interest in Harley-Davidson, is unlikely to be persuaded by its forceful styling. For vinyl collectors who share an enthusiasm for the motorcycle brand, however, it offers the rare combination of an unmistakable display piece and a technically ambitious manual turntable. At € 2.590,-, the omission of a dust cover from the standard package is difficult to justify.
