Yamaha RX300A and Yamaha RX500A – Yamaha RX Series with 8K HDMI, Gaming Features and Streaming

The Yamaha RX300A and Yamaha RX500A mark a fresh entry point into the Yamaha RX Series, aimed at users moving beyond TV speakers or a soundbar towards a genuine multichannel system. Both models combine Dolby Atmos, 4K/120 Hz, 8K/60 Hz, eARC, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Bluetooth Multipoint, while the Yamaha RX500A adds 7.2 channels, DTS:X, WiFi, Ethernet and a full streaming package. It is a clear attempt to make the AV receiver relevant again as the technical hub of the living room.

Story Highlights
  • Yamaha Corporation is sharpening the lower end of the Yamaha RX Series with two AV receivers that cover the essentials of current home cinema: HDMI 2.1, immersive audio, HDR and gaming features. The Yamaha RX300A keeps the concept compact, while the Yamaha RX500A is the more complete solution for users who want home cinema, gaming and music streaming in one central component.

Yamaha RX300A and Yamaha RX500A – A New Entry Point into the Yamaha RX Series

With the Yamaha RX300A and Yamaha RX500A, Yamaha Corporation expands the Yamaha RX Series with two AV receivers aimed squarely at contemporary living-room systems. Both models use an up-to-date HDMI platform with four inputs and one output, support 4K at up to 120 Hz as well as 8K at up to 60 Hz, and include eARC for straightforward TV audio return via HDMI.

That positions the two AV receivers not only for films and series, but also for current games consoles and gaming PCs. VRR, ALLM and QMS are included, as are HDCP 2.3, CEC, Auto Lip Sync, Deep Color and x.v. Color. For HDR playback, both models support HDR10+, Dolby Vision and Hybrid Log-Gamma.

This combination matters particularly in this class, because many users no longer build a home cinema around one traditional source. A streaming box, games console, UHD Blu-ray player and Smart TV all need to work together without friction. In that role, the AV receiver becomes the switching centre for picture and sound, not merely an amplifier for loudspeakers.

Yamaha RX300A – 5.2 Channels for a Compact Home Cinema Start

The Yamaha RX300A is configured as a 5.2-channel AV receiver and is designed for users who want to build a classic multichannel system in the living room without stepping immediately into a more elaborate installation. Yamaha Corporation specifies 5.2 channels, five amplifier channels and an output of 70 watts into 8 ohms from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 0,09 per cent THD with two channels driven, or 145 watts into 6 ohms at 1 kHz and 10 per cent THD with one channel driven.

For Dolby Atmos, Yamaha Corporation provides flexible speaker layouts on the Yamaha RX300A. Alongside 5.2-channel playback with virtual height effects, 3.2.2 configurations with ceiling speakers or Dolby Atmos-enabled upward-firing speakers are possible. That allows the receiver to introduce a height layer even in smaller rooms, although the user must then prioritise the speaker layout accordingly rather than simply expanding a traditional surround arrangement.

With the Yamaha RX300A, Yamaha Corporation concentrates on the essential home cinema functions. Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital and DTS are supported, with Dolby Surround available for post-processing. Network streaming is not provided on this model; wireless playback is handled via Bluetooth 5.3 including Multipoint. This allows two mobile devices to be paired and makes switching between sources more convenient in everyday use.

Yamaha RX500A – 7.2 Channels, DTS:X and Streaming

The Yamaha RX500A is the more comprehensively specified of the two new AV receivers. It offers 7.2 channels, seven amplifier channels and supports DTS:X in addition to Dolby Atmos. This makes it suitable for classic 5.1.2 configurations with dedicated height speakers, but also for 7.2 playback with virtual height effects or 5.2.2 systems using ceiling or upward-firing speakers.

Yamaha Corporation quotes the same output figures as for the smaller model: 70 watts into 8 ohms from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 0,09 per cent THD with two channels driven, or 145 watts into 6 ohms at 1 kHz and 10 per cent THD with one channel driven. The distinction therefore lies less in raw power and more in channel count, expanded surround decoding and network capability.

The Yamaha RX500A supports Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS-Express, DTS, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS-ES Discrete 6.1, DTS 96/24 and DTS:X. Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X are available for post-processing. In practice, this makes the Yamaha RX500A the more broadly equipped model for more ambitious home cinema configurations.

Streaming Makes the Main Difference

The most obvious functional difference between the Yamaha RX300A and Yamaha RX500A lies in networking. The Yamaha RX300A does without WiFi and Ethernet, while the Yamaha RX500A is conceived as a connected AV receiver. It supports WiFi and Ethernet, together with Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect, Google Cast, Apple AirPlay 2, Net Radio and Podcasts.

That means the Yamaha RX500A can serve not only as a home cinema centre, but also as a day-to-day music receiver. In living rooms where films, games and music are all intended to run through the same loudspeaker system, this is the decisive advantage over the smaller model. Bluetooth 5.3 with Multipoint remains included on the Yamaha RX500A as well.

For local and network-based audio files, Yamaha Corporation lists MP3, MPEG4-AAC, WMA, WAV, FLAC, Apple Lossless and AIFF for the Yamaha RX500A. Via USB, both models support MP3, MPEG4-AAC, WMA and WAV, with the USB port also used for firmware updates.

Room Correction, Setup and Operation

Both AV receivers include automatic room correction. A setup microphone and microphone stand are supplied, allowing the receiver to measure the acoustic characteristics of the room and loudspeakers. Yamaha Corporation describes this deliberately as Room Correction, positioning it as a practical aid for typical living-room conditions rather than as an esoteric calibration system.

Setup is handled via an on-screen menu and guided configuration process. Scene buttons are also provided, allowing up to four presets for inputs and sound modes to be stored and recalled directly. In daily use, this is a meaningful convenience feature on an AV receiver: TV, console, streaming box and music playback can each be assigned their own input and listening mode.

Sound modes include Pure Direct, Straight, Movie, All Channel Stereo, 2 Channel Stereo, Music and Night. Additional functions include Dialogue Level, Subwoofer Trim, Extra Bass and Lip Sync. Zone B is provided on both models, and Bi-Amping is also supported.

A.R.T. Wedge and a More Stable HDMI Section

Yamaha Corporation also refers to the A.R.T. Wedge on both models, the company’s Anti Resonance Technology in the form of a centrally positioned fifth foot. According to the manufacturer, this works together with the four outer feet to reduce chassis vibration and contribute to more stable, more precise playback.

The HDMI section is also specifically addressed. A larger heat sink above the HDMI circuitry is intended to control heat build-up when processing data-intensive HDMI signals and to protect sensitive DSP and HDMI components.
