What’s driving the sound

Conversion is handled by a pair of ESS ES9069Q chips, part of the fourth generation of ESS’s 32 bit HyperStream architecture, capable of linear PCM up to 32 bit 768 kHz and native DSD512 with no downsampling required. On the amplification side, two TI OPA1692 op-amps work alongside four TI OPA1622 units wired in parallel purely for driving headphones.

Two headphone outputs are on offer: a standard 3,5 mm stereo mini-jack and a balanced 4,4 mm Pentaconn connector. The 3,5 mm socket has a second function too, outputting a coaxial S/PDIF signal, which turns the QX11 into a USB-to-S/PDIF bridge for feeding an external DAC or a suitably equipped active speaker setup.

Getting the tuning right for a specific headphone

Rather than relying on a single generic sound signature, the QX11 offers AUTO EQ through both a web interface and FiiO’s companion app, applying a correction profile matched to a given headphone model. Preset sound profiles and a 10-band equaliser sit alongside that for anyone who’d rather shape the response manually — a more precise route than a basic bass or treble boost.

That companion app, the FiiO Control app, is currently built for Google Android and covers setup and firmware updates. None of it is required for daily use, though, since the controls that matter most are built into the unit itself.

Where the QX11 breaks from a typical USB DAC is its gaming mode, which brings dedicated tuning for shooters, action titles, multiplayer online battle arenas and rhythm games, sitting alongside the standard HiFi mode for music. FiiO’s aim is to push footsteps, gunfire and similar cues forward in the mix so they’re easier to place during play.

Voice communication is covered too, either through the QX11’s own built-in microphone or a headset microphone plugged into the 3.5mm jack. Background noise reduction is included to keep chat clear — a feature that becomes far more relevant the instant someone shifts from listening alone to talking over a live multiplayer session.

Hands-on control, not app-only

A 1.14-inch colour display shows the QX11’s operating status, volume runs through a rotary dial with a push function, and a configurable shortcut button adds quick access to one further setting of the user’s choosing. Volume can be set to either 60 or 120 steps, depending on whether coarse or fine adjustment is preferred.

The aluminium-alloy housing gets some visual character from its finish, sold in Dark Green or Vintage Gold rather than the plain grey or black most USB audio adapters settle for.
