Cambridge Audio AXR100D FM/DAB Stereo Receiver – The new entry into the world of HiFi

The Cambridge Audio AX Series is being joined by a powerful all-rounder, as promised by the English hi-fi manufacturer Cambridge Audio. With an excellent price/performance ratio, the new Cambridge Audio AXR100D is set to prove a perfect start to the hi-fi world of “Great British Sound”.

In the middle of last year, the English hi-fi manufacturer Cambridge Audio presented a new product line, the so-called Cambridge Audio AX Series, which is aimed primarily at newcomers and those returning to high-quality hi-fi music reproduction. This was promoted as a product line that was intended to provide an introduction to the “Great British Sound” claimed by Cambridge Audio.

With the introduction of this new product line, the English company launched a wide range of solutions within the new Cambridge Audio AX Series to meet a variety of requirements and appeal to a wide range of customers. In addition to the two stereo integrated amplifiers Cambridge Audio AXA25 Stereo Integrated Amplifier and Cambridge Audio AXA35 Stereo Integrated Amplifier, the solutions Cambridge Audio ACX25 Compact Disc Player and Cambridge Audio AXC35 Compact Disc Player, as well as the systems Cambridge Audio AXR85 Stereo Receiver and Cambridge Audio AXR100 Stereo Receiver are available.

Cambridge Audio is now expanding the Cambridge Audio AX Series with a solution that ranks at the top end and is intended to be the new flagship product, the new Cambridge Audio AXR100D FM/DAB Stereo Receiver. It’s easy to guess that this is a stereo receiver that builds on the existing Cambridge Audio AXR100 stereo receiver, but now comes with an integrated DAB+ tuner.

At the heart of the new Cambridge Audio AXR100D is a stereo integrated amplifier, which should have sufficient power reserves to operate even stand-alone speaker systems, in any case fine compact bookshelf speaker systems, effortlessly. Two times 100 Watts are available here at loudspeaker systems with an impedance of 8 Ohm. A typical living room is thus easily provided with adequate sound, and should even more bass be desired, an additional subwoofer can of course be controlled via a corresponding pre-amplifier output.

The sound characteristics are of course described by the manufacturer in the tried and tested manner as rather neutral, but with a certain independence, the “Great British Sound”, which is understood as the most important trademark.

Four analogue inputs are available at the connections, one of them is designed as a phono preamplifier, for drives equipped with MM pickup systems. This is a very common feature in this price range.

The new Cambridge Audio AXR100D can also integrate digital sources directly, as it has an integrated D/A converter and both one coaxial and two optical S/PDIF interfaces are available.

Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets can be integrated “wirelessly” via the Bluetooth module integrated in the Cambridge Audio AXR100D. A cable can also be used to quickly connect mobile sources via an AUX input on the front.

For radio enthusiasts, the most important difference between the new Cambridge Audio AXR100D and its “little brother” Cambridge Audio AXR100 without a “D” is the integrated DAB+ tuner in addition to FM.

For those who want to enjoy music without being disturbed during the advanced hour, the new Cambridge Audio AXR100D has a headphone connection directly on the front.

As with the previous Cambridge Audio AX Series solutions, the developers of the new Cambridge Audio AXR100D have of course opted for the modern design language with a modern touch that has been cultivated by the English hi-fi manufacturer for some time, with only the Lunar Grey version being offered here.

Naturally, a matching infrared remote control is included in the scope of delivery to ensure convenient control in addition to operation directly on the device.

Even though we have already mentioned it, we would like to emphasize it again: of course, the new Cambridge Audio AXR100D can be extended with further solutions from the Cambridge Audio AX Series, above all with the two CD players in the product range, the Cambridge Audio AXC25 and Cambridge Audio AXC35.

According to the manufacturer, the new Cambridge Audio AXR100D will be available from specialist retailers from mid-June 2020. The recommended retail price is stated as € 599.
