It’s fair to speak of a so-called desktop audio solution, which Audio-Technica Ltd. is now launching with the new Audio-Technica AT-SP3X Powered Bookshelf Speakers. These are particularly compact powered speaker systems that, according to the manufacturer, are characterised by versatility and appealing sound quality.
This should make it possible to implement a complete audio system in the smallest of spaces, with the focus being on Bluetooth, but also offering classic interfaces for integrating various sources.
Simple handling
The new Audio-Technica AT-SP3X Powered Bookshelf Speakers are designed to make it as easy as possible for users to implement a flexible audio system, according to Audio-Technica Ltd.
Unpack, set up and plug in, as simple as that, is how the company emphasises the setup process. Unlike conventional audio solutions, no receiver or amplifier is needed in addition to the speakers, as everything is integrated directly into the speakers.

As already mentioned, Bluetooth is the main focus here, with the new Audio-Technica AT-SP3X Powered Bookshelf Speakers using a module that complies with the Bluetooth 5.3 standard. Interestingly, however, the speakers only support the Bluetooth profile A2DP and the lossy codec SBC, which no longer seems quite up to date.
What is supported, however, is Bluetooth Multipoint Pairing, so that you can connect two source devices, such as a record player like the new Audio-Technica AT-LP70XBT and a smartphone, at the same time, and switch playback between them.
In addition to Bluetooth, these compact active loudspeakers also feature an analogue input designed as a pair of RCA jacks. The connection between the two loudspeaker systems is made using a classic speaker cable.
Designed as an active two-way bass reflex system
The new Audio-Technica AT-SP3X Powered Bookshelf Speakers are designed as a two-way bass reflex system with DSP-based signal processing, whereby the 3-inch bass-midrange driver and the 1.1-inch tweeter are to be powered with a total output of 30 watts and reproduce a frequency range between 55 Hz and 20 kHz.
Finally, it should be mentioned that the speaker systems measure 200 x 113 x 145 mm and the right speaker, which contains all the electronics and connections, weighs 1,6 kg, while the left speaker weighs around 1,5 kg.
