- The new Adam D3V from Adam Audio is a fully active desktop monitoring system in compact form with DSP room correction.
Adam Audio has been a recognised specialist for active loudspeaker systems for years, with the Berlin-based company primarily targeting professional users. The company quite rightly claims that its own products are regarded as reliable working tools for sound engineers and recording engineers and therefore play a central role in many studios, from recording to mastering and pre- and post-production.
The new Adam D3V Desktop Monitoring System is also primarily designed as a product for professional use, but this active speaker system should also be of interest to many discerning HiFi enthusiasts as a compact solution for the desk.
Studio sound for the desk
Adam Audio advertises the new Adam D3V active loudspeaker systems as a solution designed to provide studio sound for the desk, but clearly points out that it is not aimed solely at songwriters, producers and sound engineers, but also at music lovers in general.
This is a solution that naturally incorporates all the relevant features of the brand, starting with the deliberately sober, clear and therefore timelessly elegant design line.
The speakers have a height of just 200 mm or 240 mm including the stand, the width is specified by the manufacturer as 115 mm and the depth as 150 mm. The housing of the speaker systems is made of PC and ABS and comes in a choice of discreet matt black or brilliant matt white. Both speakers together weigh just 3,58 kg.
In the simplest case, the speakers can be placed directly on the desk, but you can also rely on the aforementioned stand, which allows them to be angled by 15°. Another placement option is the 3/8 inch thread integrated into the underside of the speakers, which allows the Adam D3V to be mounted on a stand.
Active two-way system with Adam D-ART tweeter and passive cones
In principle, the new Adam D3V desktop monitoring system is an active two-way system, but, on closer inspection, with a quite remarkable driver configuration.
First and foremost, a 1.5-inch Adam D-ART tweeter is used, which is responsible for a particularly detailed, precise high-frequency reproduction. A 3.5-inch woofer is used as a playing partner, with aluminium as the material for the cone and two passive drivers, each also equipped with a 3.5-inch cone.
DSP-based signal processing and PWM amplifier
The Adam D3V desktop monitoring system relies on DSP-based signal processing so that the user can optimise the performance by adjusting the room and easily adapt it to the individual set-up using a switch on the rear panel.
PWM amplifier modules are used for the amplifiers, with the one for the tweeters delivering two 30 watt RMS and two 40 watt peak outputs, and the one for the woofers delivering two 70 watt RMS and two 80 watt peak outputs.
The frequency response that can be covered by the Adam D3V desktop monitoring system is stated by the manufacturer in the data sheet as 45 Hz to 23,2 kHz.
The volume control and other control options are located directly on the front of the left speaker by means of rotary encoders, as are the aforementioned toggle switches for DSP room adjustment and the connections on the rear.
From analogue to USB-C
Admittedly, when it comes to the connections that can be used to integrate various sources into the Adam D3V Desktop Monitoring System, this solution is not overly versatile, but everything you need is provided. And for a modern desktop audio system for the desk, this is first and foremost a USB-C port, via which the Adam D3V Desktop Monitoring System can be easily connected to any PC or Mac without the need for special drivers.
There is also an analogue input, which is designed as a balanced 6,3 mm jack input. There is also a connection for headphones, which is also in the form of a 3,5 mm stereo mini jack. The two speakers are connected using a system cable, which is included in the scope of delivery.
Prices and availability
The new Adam D3V Desktop Monitoring System will be available from specialist retailers from mid-November 2024, as announced by the Berlin-based company. With a recommended retail price of € 320,99, the recommended retail price appears to be extremely favourable.
Getting to the point
The new Adam D3V Desktop Monitoring System appears to be a very exciting solution, not least because of its extremely attractive price, which appeals to both professional and private users. In a compact form, it is a powerful active two-way system for the desktop that offers all the virtues that can be expected of products from the Berlin specialist Adam Audio.
