Rega Planar 2 Limited by TAD – Exclusive special model for TAD Audiovertrieb GmbH

A Rega Planar 2 turntable, equipped with a Rega RB220 tonearm, a 24 V low-noise motor, matt-coated, anthracite-coloured chassis and a newly developed bearing for the platter, also fitted with the Rega Nd3 MM cartridge - this is the Rega Planar 2 Limited by TAD.

Story Highlights
  • Only 400 units of the Rega Planar 2 Limited by TAD will be made, a special model designed by Rega Research Limited exclusively for TAD Audiovertrieb GmbH.

TAD Audiovertrieb GmbH has always had a particularly good relationship with the English HiFi manufacturer Rega Research Limited, whose products have been distributed in Germany for many years. This close co-operation means that the company not only has a great deal of say in the development of new solutions, but can also design many a product completely according to its own ideas.

Such as the record player that TAD Audiovertrieb GmbH can now offer exclusively in very, very small numbers, the Rega Planar 2 Limited Edition by TAD. There will be no more than 400 of these turntables.

Elegant chassis in matt anthracite

Although the Rega Planar 2 Limited by TAD is based on the familiar Rega Planar 2, it has been designed with the Rega Planar 3 in mind and therefore features some very striking improvements in detail.

For example, the Rega Planar 2 Limited by TAD is presented in a special matt anthracite coating, with the aim of achieving a special surface finish to give the turntable a timeless elegance. The turntable rests on specially developed, highly effective acoustic feet designed to ensure optimum decoupling.

Optiwhite float glass platter in newly developed platter bearing

We must also emphasise a new bearing that is used here, which is said to be characterised by a particularly high fitting accuracy and minimal bearing stress and for which the manufacturer has applied for a patent.

A 10 mm thick platter made of glass rotates in this bearing, whereby the manufacturer itself speaks of an Optiwhite float glass platter with the highest precision.

The platter is driven by a newly developed 24 V motor and electronic control system using a sub-platter and belt, for which the manufacturer promises extremely smooth running and the best possible speed stability.

Rega RB220 tonearm

The tonearm used on the Rega Planar 2 Limited by TAD is the latest development from the English company in this area, the Rega RB220 tonearm, which relies on a completely newly developed tonearm tube that is fitted in a headshell with three holes for the perfect three-point mounting of cartridge systems from Rega Research Limited.

The Rega RB220 tonearm also relies on a newly developed backlash-free ball bearing for minimum friction, a new anti-skating adjustment, a reinforced housing for the vertical bearing and can therefore justifiably be described as a precision tonearm.

Rega Nd3 MM cartridge pre-assembled

The new Rega Planar 2 Limited by TAD is designed as a plug & play turntable and is therefore supplied from the factory already fitted with a cartridge system. It uses the brand-new Rega Nd3 MM cartridge, which is being marketed as the successor to the Rega Elys-2 MM cartridge, but is said to be of a completely different quality level.

Prices and availability

As already described, the new Rega Planar 2 Limited by TAD will be manufactured exclusively for TAD Audiovertrieb GmbH, in a quantity of no more than 400 units, and will also be offered in Austria by Audiovertrieb by HZ Electronics as a partner of the German distributor. The recommended retail price is listed at € 799,-.

Getting to the point

It is an extremely elegant turntable from Rega Research Limited, which is now being offered in the form of the new Rega Planar 2 Limited by TAD in a strictly limited edition of just 400 units in Germany and Austria alone, and which boasts some exciting technical features.
