Q Acoustics M40 HD Wireless Music System – Active Ultra-compact Micro Tower

Building on the success of the Q Acoustics M20 HD Wireless Music System, the British company Q Acoustics is now launching the Q Acoustics M40 HD Wireless Music System, a compact, powerful and, above all, versatile wireless active loudspeaker system.

Story Highlights
  • The new Q Acoustics M40 HD Wireless Music System from Q Acoustics is a compact, yet powerful and versatile wireless active speaker system.

With the new Q Acoustics M40 HD Wireless Music System, the British loudspeaker specialist Q Acoustics aims to build on the success of the Q Acoustics M20 HD Wireless Music System, which the company presented back in September 2021. The Q Acoustics M20 HD Wireless Music System was designed to provide a particularly compact yet very appealing active speaker system that is extremely versatile despite taking up very little space.

This is exactly what the English company now promises for the new Q Acoustics M40 HD Wireless Music System, which is essentially the corresponding version of the floor-standing speaker systems of the aforementioned Q Acoustics M20, but still in a very, very compact and elegant form.

Active floor-standing speaker systems with a very discreet design

One of the outstanding features of the new Q Acoustics M40 HD Wireless Music System is indeed its discreet appearance, which is primarily due to its very compact construction, but also its deliberately understated design.

The active loudspeaker systems measure no more than 710 mm in height, which is actually very modest in appearance, especially as the width is only 250 mm and the depth only 296 mm. Incidentally, this already includes the feet on which the speakers stand securely.

The system is designed in such a way that there is an active and a passive component, so one speaker system contains all the electronics and thus weighs 12,4 kg. The passive speaker, however, is only slightly lighter at 11,8 kg, which indicates the massive design, which is certainly in the interests of optimum sound.

The new active loudspeaker systems from Q Acoustics are available in black, white or walnut veneer and are designed to integrate harmoniously into any living environment, regardless of the individual furnishing style.

Active two-way bass reflex system

The new Q Acoustics M40 HD Wireless Music System has been designed as an active two-way bass reflex system, relying on the latest developments from Q Acoustics in driver technology, as the manufacturer states for the record. First and foremost, there is the Q Acoustics C3 Continuos Curved Cone mid-woofer driver, taken from the Q Acoustics 5000 Series, which is said to have the outstanding bass performance of a traditional straight cone combined with the control of the high and mid-range and the fidelity of a curved cone.

Two of these drivers, each with a diameter of 5 inches, are combined in a tweeter-at-the-to configuration with a 0,9 inch tweeter and the so-called Helmholtz Pressure Equaliser Technology, also known as HPE Technology for short. This is designed to reduce unwanted standing waves in the cabinet. Q Acoustics’ own point-to-point internal bracing is also designed to make the speakers as rigid and inert as possible, so that the best results are achieved free from sound-damaging vibrations.

Great attention has even been paid to the speaker grilles, as these are not removable, but actually contribute to the rigidity of the baffle thanks to their fixed screw connection. In this respect, it is essential that they are designed in such a way that they have as little influence as possible on the operation of the drivers, which is why this is referred to as an open grille design to minimise interference with the sound radiation and reduce reflections for even sound reproduction.

Power through efficient Class D amplifier modules

Despite its compact dimensions, the new Q Acoustics M40 HD Wireless Music System provides sufficient power thanks to energy-efficient Class D amplifier modules, which enable it to develop a peak output of 200 watts. On a more sober note, that’s twice 50 watts RMS.

To stay with the technical data for a moment, the Q Acoustics M40 Micro Towers, designed as two-way bass reflex systems, can reproduce a frequency range between 38 Hz and 22 kHz, with a crossover frequency of 2,5 kHz stated in the data sheet.

Analogue, digital and Bluetooth

Despite its compact design, the Q Acoustics M40 HD Wireless Music System should prove to be an extremely versatile solution for flexible use, with all relevant inputs available according to the manufacturer.

This starts with analogue inputs, with two pairs of RCA sockets plus an additional input in the form of a 3,5 mm stereo mini jack.

Digital sources can be integrated via an optical S/PDIF interface and a USB Type-B port is also available for direct connection to a PC or Mac, whereby signals can be transmitted in Linear PCM with a resolution of 24 bit and 192 kHz.

Bluetooth 5.0 is available for “wireless” signal transmission, whereby aptX, aptX HD and aptX Low Latency are supported in addition to the lossy SBC and AAC codecs. This means that nothing stands in the way of signal transmission up to 24 bit and 48 kHz with the appropriate source.

If desired, a subwoofer can be added to the mix, and the Q Acoustics M40 Micro Towers naturally have a corresponding output.

Prices and availability

According to the manufacturer, the micro towers of the new Q Acoustics M40 HD Wireless Music System will soon be available from specialist retailers, with a recommended retail price of € 899,-. The scope of delivery includes a matching infrared remote control.

Getting to the point

The latest solutions from Q Acoustics, the Q Acoustics M40 HD Wireless Music System, which the British company aptly describes as a Micro Tower, should prove to be particularly elegant, very compact active Floorstanding speaker systems. Essentially, these are the big siblings of the Q Acoustics M20 HD Wireless Music System, whose success the new Q Acoustics M40 HD Wireless Music System aims to build on.
