Pro-Ject T2 Turntable – A turntable without bells and whistles

With the Pro-Ject T Line, Pro-Ject Audio Systems established an extremely elegant product line, which is currently led by the Pro-Ject T2 W and Pro-Ject T2 Super Phono models. The new Pro-Ject T2 Turntable has now been announced as an alternative in the form of a turntable that concentrates solely on the essentials.

Story Highlights
  • The Pro-Ject T2 turntable is the latest addition to the Pro-Ject T Line, focussing solely on the essentials.

Although the Pro-Ject T Line is basically designed as a product line aimed at demanding beginners in the field of record playback, it is not prepared to compromise on quality and is therefore looking for solutions with a very good price-performance ratio. The product line, which Pro-Ject Audio Systems established in 2019 with the Pro-Ject 1 turntable, was recently expanded to include the Pro-Ject T2 Super Phono model, a brother of the Pro-Ject T2 W turntable, which has been available for some time.

Now Pro-Ject Audio Systems is announcing another turntable in the Pro-Ject T Line, the new Pro-Ject T2 Turntable. This is a solution that concentrates entirely on the essentials: the Pro-Ject T Line has been expanded with this new model with a turntable that has no frills, as the manufacturer itself describes it.

Free of any frills – Pro-Ject T2 turntable

The basic philosophy of Pro-Ject Audio Systems has always been to develop solutions with an excellent price-performance ratio, to design products that offer the best possible sound at an adequate price. In this respect, all products from Pro-Ject Audio Systems can ultimately be said to dispense with dazzle.

So when Pro-Ject Audio Systems talks about a turntable that is free of any frills in the case of the new Pro-Ject T2 Turntable, it can be assumed that they have actually focussed on the absolute essentials of a record player.

The new Pro-Ject T2 Turntable is said to be a solution that represents a sensible further development of the Pro-Ject T1 Turntable and offers many new audiophile functions that should ensure that the Pro-Ject T2 Turntable in question sets new standards in its price class.

Highest quality materials

A very important point that distinguishes the new Pro-Ject T2 turntable from its predecessor is the elegant, CNC-milled chassis made of MDF, which is now larger to increase stability and is available in high-quality finishes such as high-gloss black, satin white and walnut.

It is explicitly emphasised that no plastic whatsoever is used here, and that plastic covers, for example for the electronics, are not used, as is the case with many a competitor’s drive. According to Pro-Ject Audio Systems, such constructions can lead to resonances that damage the sound, but with the Pro-Ject T2 turntable you don’t have to worry about this.

To minimise resonance, the glass platter has also been made heavier and thicker than its predecessor, according to the company, which deliberately opted for glass rather than plastic or light metal in this class. The glass platter with a thickness of 10 mm and a diameter of 300 mm weighs 1,7 kg.

The drive rests on feet specially designed for the best possible decoupling to effectively prevent external vibrations.

Electronic motor control

The new Pro-Ject T2 turntable features electronic motor control, whereby an AC motor is used to drive a newly developed sub-platter by means of a belt. This rotates by means of a hardened stainless steel axle in a brass bushing, whereby the manufacturer speaks of an ultra-precise bearing with a tolerance of 0.001 mm.

For the sake of completeness, it should be mentioned that the speed can be selected between 33 and 45 revolutions per minute at the touch of a button.

9-inch tonearm with rigid aluminium construction

Another new feature is the 9-inch tonearm, which the manufacturer refers to as a high-precision aluminium tonearm made from a single piece. The tonearm tube merges seamlessly into the headshell.

The tonearm relies on an adjustable, spring-based anti-skating mechanism and a counterweight made of stainless steel with a nickel coating.

Sumiko Rainier MM cartridge pre-assembled ex works

It should be expressly mentioned that the new Pro-Ject T2 turntable is supplied with a pre-assembled cartridge system, namely a Sumiko Rainier MM cartridge, which comes from Sumiko’s Sumiko Oyster Series and features an elliptical cut of the diamond stylus.

Semi-balanced phono cable

As with the Pro-Ject T1 turntable, the new Pro-Ject T2 turntable also features a low-capacitance, semi-symmetrical phono cable specially developed by Pro-Ject Audio Systems and, according to the manufacturer, particularly effectively shielded. This guarantees flawless signal transmission even with the cable that is included in the scope of delivery.

Of course, the scope of delivery also includes a suitable power supply unit and a matching dust cover.

Prices and availability

The new Pro-Ject T2 turntable should be available from specialist retailers within the next few days, according to Pro-Ject Audio Systems. The recommended retail price is listed at € 549,-.

Getting to the point

The new Pro-Ject T2 Turntable is designed as a sensible further development of the Pro-Ject T1 Turntable, a turntable that is intended to be the little brother of the Pro-Ject T2 W and Pro-Ject T2 Super Phono systems. It is a solution that is perfectly in line with the corporate philosophy of Pro-Ject Audio Systems, thus representing a turntable free of any frills and with an excellent price-performance ratio.
