AVID Ingenium SE – AVID HiFi Ltd. presents the successor to the AVID Ingenium Plug & Play Turntable

AVID HiFi Ltd. is not treating its entry-level turntable as an exercise in convenience alone. The new AVID Ingenium SE Turntable takes over from the AVID Ingenium Plug & Play Turntable, but brings a more serious mechanical foundation, a redesigned motor system, an external power supply and the AVID TA-3 tonearm. It is intended as a compact starting point into AVID’s turntable philosophy, with upgrade paths that allow the deck to grow with the system.

Story Highlights
  • The AVID Ingenium SE Turntable is positioned as a more technically ambitious successor to the AVID Ingenium Plug & Play Turntable. With its external power supply, inverse bearing, screw clamp and upgradeable platter and power options, it brings AVID HiFi Ltd.’s core engineering ideas into a more accessible format.

AVID HiFi Ltd. has never been a company to romanticise vinyl merely as an object of nostalgia. Its approach has always been more physical, more mechanical and, in the best sense, rather English: deal with energy properly, control resonance rather than dress it up, keep the platter turning with authority, and give the cartridge as little unnecessary work as possible.

Even the company name, AVID, derived from “A Very Interesting Design”, carries that engineering intent. Under Conrad Mas, AVID HiFi Ltd. has built its reputation around the belief that a record player is not a decorative accessory with a tonearm attached, but a mechanical system in which bearing, motor, platter, clamping and structure all have to behave with discipline.

The new AVID Ingenium SE Turntable sits precisely in that tradition. It replaces the AVID Ingenium Plug & Play Turntable, yet AVID HiFi Ltd. is clearly not presenting it as a light refresh. With a newly developed motor system, external power supply, AVID TA-3 tonearm and defined upgrade routes, the new model moves the entry point to AVID’s turntable range closer to the design thinking behind the company’s larger decks.

AVID Ingenium SE – a more serious starting point for AVID turntables

According to AVID HiFi Ltd., the AVID Ingenium SE represents a significant development over the previous AVID Ingenium Plug & Play Turntable. It remains the comparatively accessible gateway into the British manufacturer’s range, but technically it now moves closer to the more ambitious solutions found further up the AVID portfolio.

At the centre of the new design is a freshly developed motor system derived directly from the AVID Relveo. The motor is housed in its own precisely machined enclosure and is powered by an external supply. AVID HiFi Ltd. says this arrangement is intended to deliver more stable speed behaviour, reduce mechanical influence on the deck itself and lower the noise floor.

That gives the AVID Ingenium SE a rather different character from the usual “easy vinyl” proposition. It may still be compact and approachable, but AVID HiFi Ltd. clearly wants it to be understood as a properly engineered record-playing platform, one that already uses key AVID technologies in standard form and leaves room for later upgrades.

External power supply and new motor system

The inclusion of an external power supply as standard is one of the most important technical decisions in the AVID Ingenium SE. A dedicated mains transformer and separate control electronics are intended to feed the motor more evenly, improving speed stability, running quietness and musical composure.

The 24 V AC synchronous motor has, according to the manufacturer, been newly developed for this model and takes technical cues from the AVID Relveo. It is mounted on a heavy, independent stability base designed to drain very small vibrations away from the drive system. The aim is controlled platter drive, rapid start-up, high rotational accuracy and the kind of mechanical steadiness AVID HiFi Ltd. regards as central to its turntable philosophy.

For users who intend to take the AVID Ingenium SE further at a later stage, the manufacturer also offers an upgrade power supply. This, too, is derived from the AVID Relveo and is intended to provide still more precise speed control. In combination with this upgrade, AVID HiFi Ltd. also specifies a twin-belt configuration, designed to improve stability, grip and dynamic control.

Bearing, clamp and chassis as the mechanical foundation

The inverse bearing plays a central role in the AVID Ingenium SE. AVID HiFi Ltd. uses a sapphire and tungsten carbide contact point, with the bearing structure designed to avoid lateral movement at the contact interface. The intention is to allow the platter to rotate with greater calm, without unwanted wobble or rumble.

The AVID screw clamp is another familiar part of the company’s thinking. It couples the record firmly to the platter and bearing, helps drain unwanted vibration and can also assist lightly warped records in making better contact with the playing surface. The underlying principle is the same as on AVID’s larger turntables: the record should be mechanically defined as securely as possible, so that the cartridge can follow the groove with greater precision.

The chassis is made from solid machined aluminium and uses a cross-shaped structure. This is intended to maintain a particularly rigid relationship between tonearm and platter. Any movement in this area can have a direct effect on tracking, which is why AVID HiFi Ltd. has again chosen a deliberately stiff, resonance-controlled construction.

The entire assembly is supported by a specially tuned elastomer or Sorbothane isolation system. This is designed to reduce external vibration and loudspeaker feedback, helping the turntable maintain its mechanical quietness in real-world listening rooms.

AVID TA-3 tonearm with greater flexibility

The AVID Ingenium SE is supplied with the AVID TA-3 tonearm. Compared with the previous solution, it is intended to offer greater precision, lower resonance and more flexibility when choosing a cartridge. Adjustable anti-skating is an important part of this, allowing finer setup with different cartridge types.

The tonearm has an effective mass of 11 g and an effective length of 236,5 mm. Overhang is specified at 14,5 mm, while the offset angle is 21,55°. Internal wiring capacitance is stated at 80 pF, and connection is via gold-plated Neutrik Cinch connectors.

This means the AVID Ingenium SE is not aimed solely at listeners who want a ready-configured solution. It also addresses those who may wish to select a cartridge more deliberately and develop the deck in line with the rest of their system.

Platter with optional metal upgrade

As standard, AVID HiFi Ltd. fits the Ingenium SE with a precisely machined MDF or high-density fibreboard platter. Used with a cork-based mat, this platter is intended to provide a stable, self-damping support for the record while controlling energy at the record surface.

As an upgrade, AVID offers a solid aluminium metal platter. This raises platter mass from 2,5 kg to 5,5 kg and is intended to improve speed stability through greater rotational mass, tighter manufacturing tolerances and higher rigidity. According to the manufacturer, bass precision, dynamics, quietness and the natural coherence of playback all benefit from this option.

This upgrade path is one of the more persuasive aspects of the AVID Ingenium SE. The deck does not have to be bought in its maximum configuration from day one. A listener can begin with the standard version and add the metal platter and upgraded power supply later.

Price and availability

According to AVID HiFi Ltd., the AVID Ingenium SE is scheduled to be available worldwide from June 2026. The manufacturer lists three configurations. The base version with standard power supply and MDF platter is priced at € 3.595,-. The second version adds the metal platter and is listed at € 3.995,-. The third configuration includes both the upgrade power supply and the metal platter and is priced at € 5.995,-.

AVID HiFi Ltd. also offers the two upgrades separately. The metal platter is available individually at € 600,-, while the upgrade power supply costs € 2.000,-. This allows the AVID Ingenium SE to be developed after purchase in a targeted and system-led way.

Getting to the point

With the AVID Ingenium SE Turntable, AVID HiFi Ltd. is not simply replacing the AVID Ingenium Plug & Play Turntable with a tidied-up version of the same idea. It is using the opportunity to reposition its entry-level deck as a more technically serious proposition. External power, a newly developed motor, inverse bearing, screw clamp and AVID TA-3 tonearm make it clear that this is not lifestyle vinyl dressed in audiophile language, but a properly considered mechanical platform.

The upgrade strategy is particularly important. A listener can enter the AVID range with the AVID Ingenium SE and then refine the deck later, without abandoning the basic platform. That makes the new turntable a sensible proposition for vinyl enthusiasts who want more than a finished box: they are buying into a system that can develop as the rest of their replay chain develops.
