Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5 – New high-end loudspeaker generation for HIGH END Vienna 2026

The Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond has never been a casual loudspeaker range; it is the company’s most visible statement of what a modern High-end loudspeaker should be. With the new D5 generation, Bowers & Wilkins does not merely refresh the line, but revisits cabinet structure, bracing, plinth design, drive-unit motor systems, crossovers, internal wiring and finishes. The result is a seven-model series that stretches from the compact Bowers & Wilkins 805 D5 to the new flagship Bowers & Wilkins 801 D5, while also serving ambitious Home Cinema installations with two dedicated centre speakers.

Story Highlights
  • Bowers & Wilkins uses HIGH END Vienna 2026 for one of the most important loudspeaker launches of its anniversary year. The new Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5 brings Signature-derived engineering, a more rigid cabinet platform and a sharpened visual language to the company’s best-known High-end loudspeaker family.

Bowers & Wilkins is using HIGH END Vienna 2026 for a particularly prominent premiere: the new Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5 is being shown in Vienna for the first time, marking the fifth generation of the distinguished High-end loudspeaker line with Diamond dome tweeter. The D5 generation arrives in the year of the renowned British brand’s 60th anniversary, Bowers & Wilkins now of course being part of Harman International, and is intended to carry forward the “True Sound” philosophy established by company founder John Bowers. The range comprises seven models, from the compact Bowers & Wilkins 805 D5 to the flagship Bowers & Wilkins 801 D5, and is completed by two centre speakers for premium Home Cinema installations. According to the manufacturer, virtually every relevant area has been revised, including cabinet, internal bracing, plinth, crossovers, wiring, drive-unit motor systems and finishes. As before, the new Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5 is manufactured in Worthing, United Kingdom.

Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5 – the fifth generation with Diamond dome tweeter

The Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond has, for many years, stood among the most recognisable loudspeaker families in elevated HiFi. It is the sort of range that carries a great deal of expectation: not simply because of its price, nor because of its studio associations, but because it has become a technical calling card for Bowers & Wilkins itself. With the new D5 generation, Bowers & Wilkins now moves the series into another phase of development.

This is the fifth generation of the 800 Series Diamond with Diamond dome tweeter. Crucially, the manufacturer is not presenting the D5 as a cosmetic exercise or as a mild revision of the outgoing platform. Instead, Bowers & Wilkins has re-examined the core mechanical and electrical elements that define the behaviour of a loudspeaker at this level.

The new series consists of the two-way standmount loudspeaker Bowers & Wilkins 805 D5, the four three-way floorstanding loudspeakers Bowers & Wilkins 804 D5, Bowers & Wilkins 803 D5, Bowers & Wilkins 802 D5 and Bowers & Wilkins 801 D5, as well as the centre speakers Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 and Bowers & Wilkins HTM82 D5. Bowers & Wilkins is therefore addressing both classic stereo systems and elaborate Home Cinema installations, where tonal continuity and technical consistency across several channels are not luxuries, but requirements.

According to the manufacturer, the new generation is intended to further develop the familiar balance of analytical precision, spatial imaging and high dynamic ability. At the heart of this remains the aim of reproducing the original recording as faithfully as possible — a principle Bowers & Wilkins has summarised for decades under the term “True Sound”.

Cabinet, bracing and plinth redesigned

One of the key areas of the new D5 generation is the mechanical quietening of the loudspeaker cabinet. Bowers & Wilkins describes it as the most powerful and mechanically “quietest” cabinet the company has yet developed for the 800 Series Diamond. The foundation for this is a combination of Enhanced Matrix, new Space Frame Bracing, a revised aluminium top plate and newly designed plinths.

The Space Frame Bracing is bolted directly to the Matrix construction on the rear panel of the respective cabinet. Parallel aluminium braces running longitudinally and laterally are intended to further stabilise the rear wall and reduce unwanted vibration. Together with the aluminium structures at the front and the further developed Enhanced Matrix, this should minimise cabinet resonances further and support a calmer, more precise sonic presentation.

The aluminium top plate has also been redesigned. Thicker aluminium ribs, additional mechanical fixing points and optimised decoupling mounts are intended to improve behaviour in the upper section of the cabinet. On the larger models, this construction also supports the Turbine Head and the Tweeter-on-Top housing. The aluminium plate is supplemented by a further developed trim element in Connolly leather, as well as damping materials derived from the Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series D4 Signature.

The floorstanding loudspeakers in the new series also receive newly developed aluminium plinths. These are matched to the respective cabinet shape and use constrained-layer damping as well as tuned mass damping. According to the manufacturer, the masses are defined individually for each plinth in order to further reduce unwanted vibration. Castors and spikes are visually integrated by the extended lower edge of the plinth.

New engineering for tweeter, midrange drivers and crossovers

The Diamond dome tweeters of the new Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5 use a further developed speaker grille originally created for the Bowers & Wilkins 801 D4 Signature. The new grille is intended to continue protecting the dome effectively while being more acoustically transparent. Bowers & Wilkins promises higher resolution and improved dispersion away from the direct listening axis.

Technologies from the Signature Series also feed into the midrange, bass/midrange and bass drivers. The new motor systems are intended to reduce distortion and thereby contribute to more precise reproduction, improved transient behaviour and greater dynamic ability. The Bowers & Wilkins 804 D5 is especially notable here: it now receives its own aluminium enclosure for the FST midrange driver with Continuum cone. This construction principle is derived from the particularly rigid Turbine Head of the larger models and is intended to isolate the midrange driver more effectively in mechanical terms.

The crossovers and wiring looms have also been revised. Every model in the D5 generation has an improved crossover, also derived from the Signature Series. In addition, there are new internal cables, higher-quality terminals and, on the stereo models, a solid aluminium mounting plate that is firmly connected to the cabinet and Space Frame Bracing using substantial M8 and M4 bolts.

Design with tighter tolerances and four new finishes

Alongside the technical development, Bowers & Wilkins has significantly refined the design of the 800 Series Diamond. The new D5 generation appears smoother, more integrated and more reduced. Visible transitions between surfaces have been minimised, fixings concealed and gaps reduced. According to the manufacturer, paint quality and the painting process have also been improved, particularly for the new Stealth Black finish.

The new Dark Walnut finish is inspired by the exclusive Bowers & Wilkins 801 Abbey Road Limited Edition and replaces the previous Satin Walnut version. Dark metal details and a Connolly leather trim element are intended to underline its especially luxurious character. Stealth Black combines dark surfaces with matching metal details, creating an even more coherent and uncompromising appearance.

Warm White has been developed from the white finish of the previous generation. It now appears warmer and more contemporary, and is combined with champagne-coloured details. Light Walnut also uses champagne-coloured metal elements and a colour-matched Turbine Head. To suit the new range, the white and black subwoofers of the Bowers & Wilkins DB Series are also being adapted to the Stealth Black and Warm White versions of the new D5 generation.

Conclusion

With the new Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond D5, the British brand Bowers & Wilkins is not pursuing a showy reinterpretation, but a deep further development of the loudspeaker line that has long served as the technological reference within its own portfolio. What matters here is less a single spectacular feature than the cumulative effect of many targeted constructional interventions: cabinet rigidity, damping, driver motor systems, crossovers, wiring and mechanical decoupling have all been developed with intent. The fact that Bowers & Wilkins is bringing the premiere to HIGH END Vienna 2026 suits the standing of this series: the 800 Series Diamond D5 is not a side note to an anniversary, but a clear statement of position for the company’s 60th birthday.
