CANVAS Review: Integrated TV Audio System Aiming for True HiFi Performance

While modern televisions deliver impressive visuals, audio performance often remains a weak point. CANVAS approaches this challenge with a fundamentally different concept, combining an integrated TV mounting system with a fully active HiFi loudspeaker design. The result is an all-in-one solution that prioritizes sound quality, spatial realism, and seamless everyday use.

Story Highlights
  • CANVAS approaches TV audio from a HiFi perspective rather than a soundbar mindset. Its fully active design, advanced DSP processing, and modular construction aim to deliver serious audio performance in a visually integrated form.

Across all price ranges, modern televisions have long achieved an image quality that leaves little to be desired. When it comes to sound, however, even premium models still fall noticeably short. An additional audio solution is therefore essential, with many users turning to so-called soundbars. Danish manufacturer CANVAS HiFi takes a radically different approach with CANVAS, merging television and a fully fledged HiFi system into a functional and aesthetic unit. This review clearly shows why the system should not be considered a soundbar in the conventional sense.

Why CANVAS Defines Its Own Category

CANVAS emerged from a clearly articulated counter-movement. The developers set out to create an audio system that integrates mechanically and visually seamlessly with modern televisions, without sacrificing the fundamental principles of true HiFi sound. The starting point was a sober realization: while picture quality in modern TVs has steadily improved over the years, audio has increasingly been reduced to space-saving solutions that come with acoustic compromises.

The chosen form factor introduced two central challenges. First, the small distance between the left and right speakers, which traditionally prevents a credible stereo image; second, the wall-adjacent placement, which can quickly lead to uncontrolled bass emphasis. CANVAS is the result of a development process in which these inherent limitations were not accepted, but deliberately addressed through engineering. The ambition was clear: to create an integrated TV audio system that not only sounds better than any soundbar, but can also stand comparison with full-scale HiFi loudspeaker systems.

High-End Loudspeaker Engineering – The Physical Foundation for True Sound

Even the basic construction of CANVAS differs fundamentally from what is commonly referred to as a soundbar. The solid MDF cabinet, with an internal volume of around 24 liters, is exceptionally generous for a TV-adjacent audio system and deliberately designed for acoustic stability. Internal bracing ensures a high level of cabinet rigidity and minimizes resonances, which can otherwise lead to coloration, especially at higher listening levels.

For the drivers, CANVAS consistently relies on high-quality units from SB Acoustics. Two long-throw bass/midrange drivers with aluminum die-cast baskets cover the fundamental and presence ranges and are designed for high linear excursion. They are supported by two passive radiators that extend the low-frequency response and provide tangible bass depth without relying on artificial electronic bass boosts. In the treble range, two carefully tuned dome tweeters with rear-damped chambers are employed, enabling clean, low-distortion reproduction up into the highest frequencies.

Decisive is the fully active architecture. Each individual driver is driven directly by the integrated amplifier section, which provides a total of four channels. Frequency division takes place exclusively in the digital domain via DSP, eliminating classic passive components. This allows precise control of level, phase, and crossover frequencies and forms the basis for the exceptional clarity and dynamics that ultimately define CANVAS.

Digital Signal Processing and BACCH 3D – Spatial Imaging Beyond Classic Soundbars

One of the greatest challenges of compact TV audio systems is spatial reproduction. Because the left and right speakers are positioned very close to each other, the soundstage of conventional soundbars usually remains flat and tightly bound to the screen. CANVAS addresses this structural issue with a combination of a powerful DSP platform and integrated BACCH 3D technology.

BACCH 3D is based on sophisticated crosstalk cancellation, selectively suppressing unwanted signal components that reach the opposite ear. In practice, this causes the virtual stereo base to extend well beyond the physical width of the system. The stage not only opens up in width, but also gains depth and, to a limited extent, height. Voices detach clearly from the screen, instruments are stably positioned in space, and even complex arrangements remain transparent and easy to follow.

The quad-core DSP does far more than just handle the BACCH filters. It controls the active crossover, manages the amplifiers’ dynamic reserves, and enables automatic room correction. Within a few minutes, the listening room is analyzed and the tonal balance adjusted. Especially in typical living spaces with less-than-ideal acoustics, this proves to be a significant advantage over classic HiFi systems without calibration.

Modular Design, Universal Mounting, and a Service-Friendly Concept

A central element of the CANVAS philosophy is its consistently modular construction. At the heart of the system is the universal TV mount developed by CANVAS HiFi, designed to accommodate nearly all current televisions from major manufacturers in screen sizes from 55 to 85 inches. This solution ensures a flush, gap-free alignment of television and audio system, visually merging both components into a single unit.

The hybrid stand-and-wall mount included in the package allows CANVAS to be placed close to the floor or mounted on the wall. This choice can be changed at any time after purchase, without the need to buy additional accessories. While the setup is more involved than with a classic soundbar, detailed step-by-step instructions and accompanying video tutorials make the process straightforward.

The thoughtful approach continues behind the screen. The mount provides space for concealed placement of electronics, cables, and power outlets, maintaining a clean appearance even from the rear. This is complemented by a service-friendly, modular electronics design. Components can be replaced or upgraded if necessary—both during the extended warranty period and beyond.

Connections, Networking, and System Integration – Deliberately Reduced, Clearly Defined

The central interface is HDMI eARC. It provides a direct connection to the television, including lip-sync-accurate audio transmission and control via the TV remote. In everyday use, CANVAS behaves like an integral part of the television: power on, adjust volume, enjoy – without ever having to think of it as an additional device.

Additional inputs include optical S/PDIF and an analog line input. The latter is internally converted, allowing integration of classic sources such as a CD player, a network player, or a turntable via an external phono preamp. CANVAS is therefore not limited to TV audio, but can also serve as a central audio solution for various sources in the living room.

One important limitation should be noted: network connectivity is exclusively via WiFi. CANVAS does not provide an RJ45 Ethernet port. For many users this will be uncritical in everyday use, but for installation-focused setups that deliberately rely on wired infrastructure, it is a clear drawback that should be considered in advance.

Streaming and Music Playback – A True HiFi System in Everyday Life

In daily use, CANVAS proves to be far more versatile than its TV integration might initially suggest. For wireless music playback, Apple AirPlay 2 and Google Cast are available, both usable in multiroom environments. In addition, Spotify Connect and TIDAL Connect are supported, as well as playback via UPnP as a DLNA-certified streaming client.

This allows CANVAS to be integrated effortlessly into typical streaming setups, regardless of whether a smartphone, tablet, or streaming service is at the center of use.

Although Roon integration is communicated by the manufacturer as part of the concept, it was not yet available in a finalized, practical form at the time of this test. Anyone for whom Roon support is essential should verify this specifically before purchase.

It is also practical that CANVAS is designed not only to function as a self-contained system, but to integrate into existing app and control ecosystems – a claim made by CANVAS HiFi, citing Sonos, Bang & Olufsen, Bluesound, and HEOS as examples.

Network Setup, App Control, and Room Correction – Simple Installation and Intelligent Room Adaptation

Initial setup of CANVAS is exceptionally straightforward. On Apple iOS, it is sufficient to select the system in the WiFi settings and add it to the network using the CANVAS app. On Google Android, the first step is carried out via the Google Home app, after which the CANVAS app is also available for further configuration and fine-tuning. Within minutes, CANVAS is fully integrated into the home network and ready for operation.

The CANVAS app, available for both Apple iOS and Google Android, serves as the central control and configuration interface. It allows management of sources, adjustment of system settings, and wireless installation of software updates via OTA when required. For everyday operation, however, the app is not strictly necessary, as CANVAS is designed for deep integration with the television. In this context, it is not overly disruptive that the app occasionally responded somewhat sluggishly during testing and did not always find the system immediately.

A key feature of the CANVAS app is the integrated room correction. Using a guided measurement routine, the system analyzes the acoustic properties of the listening space and adjusts its playback accordingly. Measurements can be carried out using the microphone built into an iPhone; alternatively, the optional Zen Mic is available, compatible with both Apple iOS and Google Android, enabling even more precise capture. Especially given the typical wall-adjacent placement of CANVAS, this room correction plays a decisive role in achieving a controlled, balanced, and clean sound.

It is worth emphasizing once again: the system does not include a separate remote control – intentionally. Control is handled entirely via the TV remote using HDMI CEC. Volume adjustment, power on/off, and basic operation mirror exactly the familiar behavior of the TV’s built-in speakers. In everyday use, CANVAS does not behave like an additional audio device, but like an integral part of the television.

Danish Design and Customization – Where Sound Meets Interior Architecture

The design concept of CANVAS follows a clear Danish design tradition. The aim was to develop an audio system that is not perceived as a technical add-on, but as a natural part of a high-quality living space. Clean lines, calm proportions, and the deliberate use of natural materials define the overall impression.

A key aspect of this approach is close collaboration with renowned designers. Textile fronts are created in cooperation with the Danish brand Kvadrat and have been designed by figures such as Anne Fabricius Møller and Cristian Zuzunaga. Their work brings different design signatures – from subtly organic to graphically striking – allowing CANVAS to be tailored precisely to individual interior styles.

The textile options are complemented by wooden fronts crafted by local Danish artisans. Finishes such as Light Oak, Walnut, or Mahogany enable a classic yet timeless integration. Responsibility for the final coordination of form, materials, and functionality lay with interior architect Susanne Helberg, whose experience with Danish design classics played a key role in harmonizing technology and aesthetics.

Thanks to its modular construction, CANVAS remains adaptable in the long term. Fronts can be exchanged, proportions adjusted to new screen sizes, and the visual expression changed at any time—an approach that goes far beyond conventional product design.

In Practice – Film, Series, and Concerts in Impressive Quality

In testing, CANVAS was used in combination with a Samsung 65-inch OLED TV. Sources included Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video, supplemented by an Apple TV 4K and an Oppo UDP-203 4K UHD player. This setup covers a wide range of real-world use cases, from compressed streaming soundtracks to high-quality multichannel and concert productions on Blu-ray.

Sonically, CANVAS impresses immediately with remarkable fine detail, stable spatial imaging, and dynamics that go far beyond what is typically expected from integrated TV solutions. Particularly striking is its ability to play cleanly and in a controlled manner even at elevated volumes. The sound remains open, detailed, and free from harshness – qualities more commonly associated with full-size loudspeaker systems.

Even with series content, CANVAS delivers excellent speech intelligibility. Dialogues are reproduced clearly, with body and naturalness, without sounding artificially pushed forward. Voices remain precisely located even in dense soundscapes, while effects are accurately placed in space. Bass performance is controlled and deep, without booming or exaggeration – a clear contrast to many soundbars that merely simulate low frequencies.

With news, talk shows, or magazine formats, one may initially be surprised by how “powerful” and full-bodied some voices suddenly sound.

In films, the system reveals its dynamic reserves. Action sequences have tangible substance without tipping into restlessness or harshness. Particularly impressive is its level stability: even at higher volumes, the sound remains composed, open, and free from compression effects. The soundstage always feels stable and well defined.

CANVAS truly shines with concert recordings. Here, it demonstrates with particular clarity how confidently it handles dynamics, spatial imaging, and tonal differentiation – regardless of musical genre.

Police – Certifiable benefits greatly from the precise separation of the individual musicians. The often nuanced drumming is rendered cleanly and remains intelligible even in dense passages. The lively, sometimes playful guitar riffs occupy clear positions in space, while the bass is dynamic, deep, and controlled. Above it all stands the powerful, characterful voice, effortlessly detached from the instrumental foundation and always present without sounding dominant. Here in particular, CANVAS impresses with an excellent balance between detail resolution and musical coherence.

AC/DC – Live at the River Plate places very different demands on the system. This is less about fine nuance and more about raw energy, pressure, and drive. CANVAS masters this task with remarkable authority. The massive guitar walls retain structure, the drums deliver physical punch, and the enormous dynamics of the recording are conveyed with excitement. Especially notable is the system’s level stability: even at high volumes, the sound remains stable and free of harshness.

With David Gilmour – Live at Pompeii and Pink Floyd – Delicate Sound of Thunder, the focus clearly shifts to spaciousness, atmosphere, and micro-dynamic gradations. Guitar textures extend far beyond the screen, effects float freely in space, and the layering of instruments conveys a convincing sense of depth. CANVAS succeeds in authentically reproducing the often floating, atmospheric sound aesthetic of these productions without sacrificing precision.

Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson – Thick As A Brick Live in Iceland, with its progressive rock structure, frequent dynamic shifts, and acoustic instruments, poses a genuine challenge. Here, CANVAS impresses with transparency and control. Flute, guitar, bass, and drums remain cleanly separated even when arrangements become dense. Dynamic jumps are immediately perceptible without the sound becoming unsettled.

A completely different character is presented by Les Misérables – 25th Anniversary Concert. The almost classically oriented orchestration, large choirs, and numerous soloists demand tonal balance, fine dynamics, and vocal clarity. CANVAS handles this discipline with impressive ease. Voices have volume and naturalness, choirs are rendered broadly yet with differentiation, and the orchestra integrates homogeneously into the space. Especially in quieter passages and dynamic crescendos, the system demonstrates its ability to build and sustain musical tension.

This stylistic breadth clearly shows that CANVAS is not confined to any particular genre. Instead, it succeeds in credibly meeting a wide range of musical demands – a strong argument for anyone who values high-quality live concert experiences.

What Distinguishes CANVAS from a Classic Soundbar?

The decisive difference between CANVAS and a conventional soundbar lies not in individual features, but in the underlying concept. Soundbars are primarily designed for compactness and easy expandability. Small drivers, flat cabinets, and often heavily DSP-processed sound profiles are intended to mask physical limitations.

CANVAS follows a HiFi-centered approach. Larger cabinet volume, full-size drivers, an active multi-channel amplifier architecture, and precise digital crossover processing form the foundation for genuine bass depth, high dynamics, and clean spatial imaging. Instead of simulating sound, it is produced physically.

Added to this is the consistent integration with the television. CANVAS not only replaces the TV speakers, but forms a functional unit with the screen. The result is a system that offers the convenience of a soundbar while being clearly rooted in the HiFi world in terms of sound quality.

Who Is CANVAS Ideal For – And Who Is It Not?

CANVAS is aimed at users who seek the highest sonic standards combined with a clear focus on living-space integration. The system is ideal for those who regularly enjoy films, series, and especially concert recordings, and who value dynamics, spatial imaging, and level stability without wanting to accept separate speakers or complex equipment combinations.

Thanks to its modular construction, universal mounting, and wide selection of fronts, CANVAS is particularly well suited to design-oriented users who wish to consciously minimize visible technology without sacrificing true HiFi sound. Those looking for a solution that is maintainable and upgradable over the long term will also find a well-thought-out concept here.

CANVAS is less suitable for classic HiFi purists who enjoy experimenting with individual components or comparing different loudspeaker concepts.

Price and Availability

CANVAS is clearly positioned in the premium segment. Given the technology on offer, the high-quality construction, and the sonic performance, the pricing appears justified – especially considering that an audio system on the level of a complete HiFi setup is combined here into a single product.

The CANVAS HiFi range begins with the CANVAS Solo, priced at € 2.990,-, designed as a standalone system. The special concept in which TV and audio system form a single unit starts with CANVAS 55″ and extends up to CANVAS 85″ at a price of € 3.745,-. These prices include a black front cover. Other design variants incur additional charges depending on width. Depending on diagonal and finish, prices for additional fronts range from € 150,- for the 55-inch version in black fabric up to € 1.705,- for the 88-inch version with premium solid wood finishes in Light Oak, Walnut, or Mahogany.

Conclusion

CANVAS demonstrates impressively that high-quality sound in the living room does not necessarily require separate speakers, cable clutter, or complex operation. Instead, it achieves the rare combination of true HiFi ambition, a clear technical vision, and uncompromising integration with the television. The sound is powerful, detailed, and exceptionally spacious; even at high levels, the system remains composed and controlled. Particularly with live concerts and demanding film soundtracks, CANVAS plays to its strengths and clearly outperforms conventional soundbars.

Equally convincing is the usage concept. Complete control via the TV remote, the deliberate omission of a separate handset, and the purposeful role of the CANVAS app for setup and room correction make the system remarkably unobtrusive in everyday life. CANVAS does not demand technical enthusiasm from the user, but rewards it with substance. Those willing to accept the premium approach and live with the consciously chosen limitations in networking and Bluetooth will be rewarded with an exceptionally cohesive audio system that elevates television, films, and music to a level rarely associated with integrated solutions.
