- Based on a design by the BBC, the new Musical Fidelity LS5/9 Classic 8 Nearfield Monitor Loudspeaker.
With two new loudspeaker systems, the English hi-fi manufacturer Musical Fidelity is celebrating its entry into the highly competitive loudspeaker market. We are quite deliberately talking about celebrating this step, because they are not content with conventional concepts, which can be found on the market in many different forms anyway, but have chosen a very special tactic.
Musical Fidelity revives legendary loudspeaker concepts of the English HiFi school, such as the Musical Fidelity LS3/5A Nearfield Monitor Loudspeaker and the Musical Fidelity LS5/9 Classic 8 Nearfield Monitor Loudspeaker.
The English School…
Even though Musical Fidelity has been operating under the name Musical Fidelity – A Division by Audio Tuning Vertriebs GmbH for quite some time and is therefore actually an Austrian company, it is, of course, essentially a hi-fi company that feels committed to the English school.
So, when it comes to the market with new loudspeaker systems, it is obvious that the English tradition should also be used, and loudspeaker systems that are regarded as a kind of reference are naturally a rewarding environment for a hi-fi company that is committed to the musical performance of music in the spirit of the artists.
Musical Fidelity LS5/9 Classic 8 Nearfield Monitor Loudspeaker – A BBC Reference
In addition to various other loudspeaker systems, the new Musical Fidelity LS5/9 Classic 8 Nearfield Monitor Loudspeaker is based on a concept that was used as a so-called nearfield monitor in the studios of the British Broadcasting Corporation, the BBC.
On the back of the new Musical Fidelity LS5/9 Classic 8 Nearfield Monitor Loudspeaker you will find the note that it was designed “Made on British Broadcasting Corporation Specification BBC R&D Design 1983/10”.
Two-way bass reflex system
It is a two-way bass reflex system, which was designed as a solution in the nearfield but also in the so-called midfield. Accordingly, the loudspeaker system should be suitable for small to medium-sized rooms in the hi-fi environment and, as the manufacturer promises, always provide a superior performance.
The manufacturer particularly emphasises that this solution has been developed for the lowest possible colouration that leaves the music untouched. These are loudspeaker systems that unerringly reproduce what the respective recording is about.
For this purpose, the Musical Fidelity LS5/9 Classic 8 Nearfield Monitor Loudspeaker is equipped with a 210 mm woofer as well as a 34 mm tweeter. As a special feature, the tweeter can be adjusted via cable directly at the front, just like the original.
The manufacturer specifies a frequency range between 50 Hz and 20 kHz, an impedance of 8 ohms and an efficiency of 89 dB for the Musical Fidelity LS5/9 Classic 8 Nearfield Monitor Loudspeaker.
The Musical Fidelity LS5/9 Classic 8 Nearfield Monitor Loudspeaker is made of 9 mm birch wood and finished with a cherry veneer. The baffle is – quite classically – lacquered in black and the grille, which is included in the delivery, also conveys the typical vintage touch.
With dimensions of 460 x 275 x 285 mm, these speaker systems weigh 12 kg each.
Prices and availability
The new Musical Fidelity LS5/9 Classic 8 Nearfield Monitor Loudspeakers should be available in specialist shops soon, as the manufacturer states. Those who are interested in these classic loudspeaker systems will have to budget € 4.500,-.
Getting to the point
The Musical Fidelity LS5/9 is a two-way bass reflex loudspeaker designed as a shelf speaker. It is considered a true legend in the studio segment and is now also available for hi-fi enthusiasts. Like the original, the new version is said to have been developed by Musical Fidelity for high-level reproduction, and to be able to cover the entire range of music genres from classical to pop with a neutral yet musical performance.
