Velodyne MiniVee X – Precise bass sound

Velodyne Acoustics GmbH is a recognised expert in the field of subwoofers, with one of the company’s strengths being subwoofers that are comparatively compact yet powerful. In other words, solutions that can be easily integrated into any room without compromising on quality, but are rewarded with rich, dynamic, precise bass.

Such a solution will soon be available with the new Velodyne MiniVee X, which Velodyne Acoustic GmbH is now presenting for the first time at ISE 2024 in Barcelona. The company is talking about a true all-rounder with precise bass.

The Velodyne MicroVee X is undoubtedly a prime example of the powerful solutions that Velodyne Acoustics GmbH can realise in a compact form and, as the name suggests, can be described as the little brother of the new Velodyne MiniVee X.

A look at the data sheet of the new Velodyne MiniVee X shows that this is a tried and tested concept in a slightly more powerful form.

Subwoofer with closed housing

This is a subwoofer with a closed housing, which is designed as a so-called side-firing subwoofer. In this case, the housing is made of MDF, with elaborate bracing inside to ensure that sound-damaging vibrations and resonances are prevented from the outset.

Incidentally, the company has deliberately opted for a closed construction rather than a so-called bass reflex system, as the developers at Velodyne Acoustics GmbH believe that a much more precise performance can be achieved in this way.

Newly designed 8-inch woofers

At the heart of the new Velodyne MiniVee X are two 8-inch woofers which, according to the manufacturer, have been completely redesigned and are used here as an active and a passive driver. The two drivers are arranged opposite each other in such a way that the so-called force-cancelling design ensures that no forces are transferred to the housing, even at maximum load, which in turn would lead to undesirable resonances and thus a distortion of the sound.

In order to guarantee a powerful yet precise reproduction, the woofer of the Velodyne MiniVee X is designed with a 2-inch voice coil with a four-layer winding and a double ventilation system ensures optimum heat dissipation.

The active bass chassis is driven by an energy-efficient Class D amplifier module that delivers an output of 350 watts RMS.

DSP-based signal processing including room adaptation

Of course, a subwoofer can only deliver optimum results if it is optimally tuned to the respective room. This is achieved with the new Velodyne MiniVee X through DSP-based signal processing, which also offers room calibration with corresponding correction options.

An app is used for this, namely the Velodyne Acoustics EQ app, which is available for Apple iOS and Google Android. In combination with a suitably tuned calibration microphone included in the scope of delivery, the user can use it to achieve optimum tuning in the simplest possible way.

Wide range of connection options

The connection panel of the new Velodyne MiniVee X is particularly impressive, as all relevant options are available here. In addition to RCA connections for the left and right channels and an LFE input, speaker terminals are also available here to connect amplifiers or AV receivers without a suitable RCA output. The parallel cabling of the subwoofer and the main speakers with the high-level input is favoured by many high-end enthusiasts. In addition, Velodyne Acoustics Inc. has also thought of XLR connections so that, as promised, all relevant connection options are available.

Prices and availability

The new Velodyne MiniVee X should be available from specialist retailers as early as February 2024 in a high-gloss black finish. The recommended retail price is listed at € 999,-.
