Yamaha YH-E700A – Bluetooth Over-ear with Advanced Active Noise Cancelling

There are a number of outstanding features that should distinguish the Yamaha YH-E700A, the new over-ear Bluetooth headphones from the Japanese consumer electronics group Yamaha. True Sound, that is probably the most essential feature of the Yamaha YH-E700A, with various exclusive technologies such as Yamaha Listening Care Technology, Yamaha Listening Optimizer, but also Yamaha Advanced Active Noise Canceling.

Yamaha Corporation is one of Japan’s major consumer electronics groups, although this segment is only part of what Yamaha Corporation represents. For example, the company has been a leading instrument maker for many years and is a constant in the recording and live sound reinforcement sector, so it can justifiably claim to be able to reproduce the entire chain from the first note of a piano, guitar, bass, violin, flute, saxophone, keyboard… to drums, recording, mastering and playback in the living room via a fine hi-fi system. Yamaha Corporation is thus a group that really does have all the expertise for the proverbial true sound under one roof.

It is interesting to note in this context that such an important area as headphones has not played a major role at Yamaha Corporation, at least not in the consumer segment. Of course, Yamaha Corporation also has headphones, but these are more likely to be found in the professional audio segment. This is set to change radically, however, as the company recently launched a completely new line of headphones, which now clearly present themselves as modern lifestyle consumer solutions, but with the wealth of musical instrument and professional audio experience that only Yamaha Corporation can offer.

It is therefore no surprise that Yamaha has chosen the slogan “Yamaha True Sound” or “Stay true” for its new products, in order to create the direct link to music that is the fundamental DNA of all solutions in this area.

Yamaha is now focusing on two main product groups: True Wireless In-ear headphones, such as the Yamaha TW-E3A, Yamaha TW-E5A and Yamaha TW-E7A, and a particularly prestigious market segment, over-ear headphones with integrated active noise reduction. The new Yamaha YH-E700A is set to prove itself in this market segment, which has been dominated by a handful of manufacturers for years.

Over-ear headphones with integrated active noise cancellation, such solutions are considered to be the top of the range in the personal audio devices sector. Not only because they require the latest technology, but also because they are aimed at a target group that is willing to dig a little deeper into their pockets, especially people who travel a lot and want to enjoy music undisturbed at the highest possible level. And that’s exactly where Yamaha wants to get involved with the new Yamaha YH-E700A, equipping it with some interesting exclusive technology, such as Yamaha Listening Care technology and Yamaha Advanced Noise Cancelling.

Let’s start with the basic features of the new Yamaha YH-E700A. This over-ear headphone is, of course, a closed-back design using 40mm drivers. These are capable of reproducing a frequency range between 8 Hz and 40 kHz. The company therefore speaks of outstanding Yamaha True Sound, which is made mobile with the Yamaha YH-E700A. The Yamaha YH-E700A is thus hi-fi capable, but only if you use a cable, which is of course possible via a 3.5mm stereo mini jack.

First and foremost, however, Bluetooth 5.0 will be used for signal transmission, for which Yamaha is working together with the specialist Qualcomm. In addition to SBC and AAC, aptX Adaptive is now being used. The profiles A2DP, AVRCP, HFP and HSP are supported.

A very important feature of the new Yamaha YH-E700A is that these headphones are designed to adapt completely to the user and the environment.

In this context, Yamaha is introducing the new Yamaha Listening Optimizer technology, based on several internal microphones in the Yamaha YH-E700A. This technology continuously monitors every change in listening conditions, from the smallest changes in the listening environment to the individual’s fit and the amount of air that can escape. DSP-based signal processing is used to optimise playback in real time, ensuring the best possible sound at all times.

This includes Yamaha Listening Care technology, which intelligently tunes frequencies to suit the listening situation, a feature that originated with Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer Technology, or Yamaha YPAO for short, from the AV receiver segment, and which goes far beyond ordinary equalizer settings. This equalisation means that the volume does not need to be adjusted to ensure full sound quality in noisy environments, for example. Even at low levels, the sound is always balanced, and all this too is adjusted in real time to suit the prevailing conditions.

Equally sophisticated is the Yamaha YH-E700A’s active noise reduction system, which uses Yamaha’s proprietary Advanced ANC technology for the first time. The company describes this as advanced noise reduction that goes beyond the typical function of ANC technology. It simply removes background noise while leaving the music signal completely unaffected. Yamaha’s promise is that there is no longer any need to choose between perfect isolation from disturbing external noise and a true, immersive music experience.

Of course, the manufacturer has not neglected to include a so-called Ambient Sound Mode, which allows you to be aware of what is going on in your surroundings at all times without having to take off your headphones.

Not only does this headphone of course function as a hands-free device in combination with a smartphone, it also supports Apple Siri in addition to Google Assistant, so that you can also rely on voice control.

A suitable app is also available with Yamaha Headphones Controller for Apple iOS and Google Android.

The Yamaha YH-E700A is naturally distinguished by impeccable manufacturing with high-quality materials that ensure not only durability but also comfort. The headphones can be folded for transport and stored in the included transport box.

The Yamaha YH-E700A’s built-in rechargeable battery is designed to last up to 35 hours, so you can easily go on a journey without taking a power adapter with you. The matching USB-C to USB-A cable is of course included in the scope of delivery. After about three and a half hours the battery should be fully charged again.

Also included in the pack: a cable with 3.5 mm stereo mini jack plug and an adapter for in-flight entertainment systems.

The new Yamaha YH-E700A weighs only 325 g and is available in white and black. It is expected to be available in December 2020, although the manufacturer has so far remained silent about the price. This information will be provided shortly.

Getting to the point

Over-ear headphones with integrated active noise suppression, such solutions are considered the top class in the field of personal audio devices. Not only because they require the latest technology, but also because they are aimed at a target group that is willing to dig a little deeper into their pockets, especially people who are on the move a lot and want to enjoy music undisturbed at the highest possible level.
