Velodyne MicroVee MKII – New bass giant in miniature

A small subwoofer, which can still be used in a big way, will be available with the new Velodyne MicroVee MKII. The company Velodyne Acoustics Inc., recently acquired by Audio Reference GmbH, even promises a bass giant in miniature format.

Subwoofers are indispensable, especially in home cinema. After all, they have the task of reproducing the sound backdrop of a film in the lowest frequency range assigned to them in a powerful and, if necessary, almost brute manner. But even for classic stereo configurations, an additional subwoofer is sometimes an advantage, as it can compensate for what the speakers alone are not able to do, namely to also reproduce the lowest frequency range correctly and dynamically accurate.

If it weren’t for the fact that subwoofers are usually quite powerful companions, especially when they are supposed to deliver a good performance. However, proven specialists such as Velodyne Acoustics Inc. manage again and again to come up with comparatively compact solutions that deliver a convincing performance, yet are still comparatively compact and thus fit into a home cinema as well as a normal living room. These two characteristics are also combined in the latest product of Velodyne Acoustics, the latest addition to the Velodyne MicroVee Series, the Velodyne MicroVee MKII.

The new Velodyne MicroVee MKII is designed to deliver the best music and home cinema experience from the smallest possible package, according to the company’s high ambitions. This is to ensure that this subwoofer can be easily integrated into almost any living environment, discreetly and therefore unobtrusively, but still providing a superior reproduction.

At the heart of the new subwoofer is the so-called Digital Drive Control System from Velodyne Acoustics Inc. which uses an improved algorithm to guarantee a powerful and distortion-free reproduction. This technology ensures a taut, precise and yet powerful reproduction, while the active, DSP-based system guarantees a constantly linear movement of the diaphragm. Velodyne Acoustics Inc. states that the Digital Drive Control System, also simply abbreviated as DDCS, can achieve a distortion reduced to one sixth of that of conventional solutions.

Another special feature of the new Velodyne MicroVee MKII is the patented ERS Technology, which stands for Energy Recovery System. Here, a Class D amplifier with a power of no less than 1,000 watts RMS or 2,000 watts Dynamic drives a front-firing 6.5-inch woofer with two equally sized passive radiators on the left and right side. Incidentally, aluminium is used as the membrane here. An optimised power supply unit provides the necessary power reserves for this. It’s obvious that powerful bass with an almost “resounding” effect can be achieved. In this case, however, it should also always be controlled and precise for clean reproduction over the entire frequency range. The Velodyne MicroVee MKII has a frequency range of 38 Hz to 120 Hz.

Of course, such a performance requires various protective mechanisms, especially an anti-clipping circuit to avoid overload.

The exclusive Velodyne Subwoofer Direct function optionally bypasses the internal crossover to ensure optimum performance in any configuration, whether home cinema or stereo.

The small, powerful speaker is available in black and white, with the front woofer covered by a speaker grill that spans the entire surface. On the sides, only the passive drivers are actually protected by a textile fabric.

Of course, the new Velodyne MicroVee MKII has all the necessary options to adapt the reproduction to the configuration or room in question. Connectors include a pair of RCA jacks, high level inputs designed as clamp connectors and trigger inputs and outputs.

With dimensions of 22.9 cm in height, 22.9 cm in width and 24.4 cm in height (including feet), this subwoofer weighs around 9 kg. The new Velodyne MicroVee MKII should already be available in specialist shops these days. The manufacturer Velodyne Acoustics Inc. states a recommended retail price of € 1.100,- for this subwoofer.
